so first session of our L5R game went pretty well
In my L5R game tonight 30 men came to my house while I was out drinking and gambling and lit it on fire. Caused a huge fire that did a lot of damage to the Noble District. My guards managed to kill the vast majority of them, but my rockstar mansion was burnt to the ground... So much for being super rich and famous.
What, no love for Dark Heresy?
My friends want an rpg where you have lots of freedom to do whatever you want.
Well, here's a blatant advertisement/endorsement for Dungeons the Dragoning 40,000 7th Edition.
But yeah, I voted Useful.

NSFL indeed.
Next time I play in a generic fantasy campaign, I will play that.
It's not quite generic fantasy, but my Elf Rigger in Shadowrun is now this.
I think I'm gonna start up a Black Crusade game, I would do it with my IRL friends, but they don't have a vested interest, and I feel like I'm telling them what to do half the time, and they other half they're clueless.
I want a group thats clueless all the time.
Would anyone be down? It'd be the kind of scenario as I described above.
I'd love to play Black Crusade.

aren't you supposed to bully the elf anyway?
STORYTIME
Context: Pathfinder game borrowing 40K lore in homebrew 'verse, characters are second level. Active PCs are a fighter, a rogue, and my own paladin (our wizard, cleric and other fighter were absent - game was scheduled for tomorrow, we rescheduled to today so the cleric+fighter could join but they had to bail at the last second again. In keeping with our running gag, their characters will have to begin their next session completely naked and probably humiliated).
So we're on our ship, having successfully fled the last city. We happen to encounter a ghost ship - we kill some skeletons, including a flaming one with a really cool hat (that I just realized nobody claimed - FUCK). We did steal a ballista though.
From the beginning we'd been hearing the sound of a sobbing woman, so we make our way through the ship to the room we're pretty sure she's in, and the players are suitably on edge from the descriptions (one refused to go below decks).
My paladin was accompanying the rogue as he led along (whenever I run a character while GM, I basically never act on my own initiative, just following along with the players). We were about to open the door when he asks "What's this potion of augury in my inventory? What does that do?". I look it up, and say "it lets you ask your god if something is a good idea or not."
He uses it to ask if opening the door is a good idea or not. I ask him which god this question is directed at. After a small debate in which praying to Athe, god of atheists, was considered, he says "your guy's a paladin, I'll just ask him."
Out of character, I say, "You're asking Khorne. The Blood God. The Blood God upon the Skull Throne. God of War and Death. If opening this door is a good idea or not."
"......yes?"
I have to pause for a second. "Khorne thinks it's a GREAT idea. You should totally open that door. Seriously, just waltz right in there and everything will be just fine." I'll just let my pre-written description handle the next bit:
"As you open the door, you see a pale woman in a white dress crying. Sensing your presence, she suddenly quiets, turning toward you. Wayne, you observe that her dress has been slashed open from the neck, and you can totally see her boobs. Everyone else mainly notices the sword sticking out of her chest, because that's probably the more important thing to notice, all things considered. She opens her mouth and speaks in a ghostly voice, 'Another band of pirates? What are you going to do? Kill me again?' She laughs, her voice echoing through the hull. 'You thought you could stop my vengeance by killing me? Fools! You have only hastened your demise'. With that, she places her hands on the hilt in front of her and pulls the sword loose. Black blood drips down her chest as she rises to attack you."
Also, I managed to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that I don't give my character any favoritism. He was the only one the ghost attacked with her Corrupting Touch (3d12 damage), instantly knocking him to -8 health. I completely forgot that this both grants an attack of opportunity *and* has a Fort save for half damage.
But before that, I did manage to inflict damage via sexual harassment (Lay On Hands damages undead). And I managed to strike the final blow by landing a lucky crit with a borrowed magic longsword (I also have no magic weapons, and once my four Hands were used up I was just tanking damage anyways).
i am cursed
I was having trouble figuring out how the story of a post apocalyptic campaign was going to go, I just kept drawing blanks. Then I realized I was really dumb - I forgot to have any kind of BBEG at the start. I added one and now everything is a lot simpler to design for. Players can decide whether they actually follow that story line or just go do stuff, but at least it's an option now.
Anyone up for a Deathwatch game? So far we have a Librarian and an Apothecary, running as angry marines, just meant to be a short, few sessions game (I've done DH and Rogue Trader before, testing Deathwatch for the first time) to have some fun.
So i've got the wonderful oppurtunity of being the DM for my group of nerds. although it seems rare from what i skim through around here, we're playing 3.5e. Is there any materials for tokens or general npc/enemy creations anyone could suggest. i've done a crap ton of searching and just want to compare what i've found. Also i'm gonna be creating most of the maps for the campaign once i get the software to do so. It'll be lots of work but probably really fun.
when in doubt
anime characters for npc tokens

I'd prefer to have a somewhat consistent style across the board. anime characters would look super out of place of an actual "realistically" detailed map.
I fear that I will never be in a Pathfinder/D&D game that lasts longer than 2 months. I think the highest level I've managed to get is to level 4.

13,000+ tokens. Not all of which will be suited for your needs, but you'll probably find something.
I'm not sure if he actually has all 13,000 uploaded on the site though. There used to be a download with them all in folders already (which did have over 13,000 individual png's), but I don't remember what forum had the link anymore.

I like to use stock photos, because my NPCs have about the same depth as one.

I personally tend to hop on deviantart, throw in some vague terms relating to what I want, and cruise past the porn until I find something decent.
And then photoshop it.
For example, here's every NPC my players have spoken to in Exalted so far that I've deemed important enough to give a picture to:

The only ones of these I didn't touch with photoshop, at all, are the fat old dude and the shady guy on the bottom right.
[sp]Subtly implied GM fuckery[/sp]

Note: There's 2 missing. A viking and a bunny rabbit, who only showed up for a few minutes each.

I use Tokentools, you just DL images off wherever, throw them in and line them up.

It allows such simple jagged wonders as this:

Thanks a bunch, seeing as this has so many i'm bound to find some useful tokens. like rats suggested, if i'm gonna have super important characters i'll look for actual art. but tokens for mobs/npcs/guards/generic enemy#435 are what i'd like so i have representation of em. thanks all for the assistance.
Half the party is going on a planar-themed barcrawl. I'm the only player in the group who can legally booze. Amusing.
So our group had it's first session of Stir Fry Wars (Star Wars Saga) today. It consisted of a short discussion on how to get a ship off Dantooine, a brief encounter in which a group of space mafia thugs intimidated one of our party members and threatened to take him into slavery, a 3-hour long shootout in a cantina, and finally an interrogation of the thug leader in which we nearly drowned him in beer. Over it was successful minus the destruction of Winter Fig, our mule droid, and the close call of one of our player's lives.
Man I love Eclipse Phase
the setting is so ridiculous and crazy and yet it's also so generally cohesive
also the character creation is the best thing after Traveller's even if it takes all the fucking time to do because the amount of point-buy

I feel like I prefer long, exhaustive, and crunchy character creation, but nobody else does, so I never make anyone do it.
Stepping out of this hobby for a bit unless I can find a group with some assurance it can have a game last longer than 4 sessions...

I love Eclipse Phase character generation. If you really take the time to go through it methodically you can make the most OP piece of shit character its the best.
