I took a quick browse of that Dungeon World system. Looks pretty interesting. I almost want to use that at some points to break the streak of D&D games.
So, my boyfriend agrees to try out my post-apocalypse Car Combat wargame with Role Playing aspects (cobbled together in an hour). So, he begun by going westwards, looking for the mythical “City on a Hill”, where he supposedly would be able to find a solution to the problem of the village's crops being eaten by Giant Radioactive Locusts. So, as he was leaving, the local military-bunker-dwelling rednecks saw him on the radar, and went after him, as they saw the locusts as “God's Wraith”, and assumed that no one must escape the divine punishment. So, two cars were running right behind him, and one of them got close enough to engage. This happened on a road in a narrow valley. So he rednecks tried to ram his car, but he evaded and got out of the way. Next turn, he shot up the first redneck car with an SMG, wrecked it, and it got thrown off to the side. Then, he flew off into the sunset, leaving the second car in dust. Once he got to a Hotel, he traded a bottle of his local drink for a room. Got a job to transport something from someone named Cannibal Joe, to a mining town called Rusts (per-apocalypse known as Valley Crusts), for Old Man Phelps. So he meets Cannibal Joe (crazed doctor who wears nothing but a blood-stained apron and a shotgun), gets a package (which he found out to be Organs), vomited, found out that he is being followed by someone, and drives off to Rusts. On the way, he fails to break into driver seat of an overturned trailer truck, hurting himself in a process. In the back, he found boxes of Tupperware, which he was afraid to pick up being afraid that I would trap him. When he gets to Rusts, he talks to two junkies, finds out Old Man Phelps, who is apparently a doctor, his assistant Irene who seem to be suffering from something, and ends the day by agreeing to let the good doctor come with him to the said “City on the Hill”. So, what I expect to do next, is to get Phelps to use Organs to operate and save Irene, rather that the local gang boss for whom they were originally intentioned. This will get the local “Founders” gang angry at the character, giving more combat-oriented session (something my boyfriend has found lacking- as most of the time we were just advancing the story I had to come up with on the spot).
Figure I might as well ask here since you guys tend to have some neat ideas My group and I are looking for some cool, general magic abilities for Magical Burst. Preferably nothing specifically elemental, or if it is, make it so it works with any element at all, and try not to make it combat-exclusive. It should be fun and easy to play around with outside of combat without completely breaking the environment, people, or the universe. Here's a list of what we have so far, for example and reference. And for the record, the first ~30 were powers we grabbed off a magical girl generator.

If you want to focus on magic, be a wizard, if not, be a cleric. Taking any other class, regardless of how fantastic the character is, is gimping yourself in terms of actual gameplay. You want to be "FRANKWISE THE SNEAK-NANIMOUS: MASTER ROGUE", but a wizard can just cast invisibility and walk past the people no problem You want to be "THUD THE SLAMMER: BARBARIAN ASSWRECKER", but a cleric can cast enlarge person and wreck everything. Basically, whatever class you are, a cleric or wizard can do it better than you.
Yeah, well, at least in pathfinder you're wrong.
Yeah, well, at least in pathfinder you're wrong.
At this point why anyone would use vanilla 3.5 over pathfinder is kind of beyond me, save for all the obscure splat stuff like incarna and the lore/setting crap Especially considering all of the crunch is available online for free
Yeah, well, at least in pathfinder you're wrong.
I'm not, go look up a guide to optimizing clerics in pathfinder and you'll quickly see how they can basically do anything better than any type of warrior/fighter class. Theyre good in most any situation and do it very well. Same goes for wizards. Of course, this is totally min/max-y, but it's not hard to pull off at all. Like, you're going to put thought into how you make your character, and you want your character to be viable to play and not just a third wheel. My Monkey Monk was fun to play as a character, but he was notso good in combat (which was the only thing he was good at), you know who was the best in combat? The Cleric.

The victim is unaware of the spell but is aware of the fact that they are not in control of their actions. As long as you do not break sight with the person for more than 5 seconds any action you make will be perfectly mirrored by the person you are controlling to the best of their abilities, otherwise the spell will self cancel. Magic can be cast through them only if they have the prerequisite spell and they are limited in actions by their physical skills (so someone with a dex of 8 can not do backflips everywhere). Attempting to cast this spell a second time in the same day has a 50/50 chance of backfiring on the castor and mirroring the victim's moves. Any time after that within the 24 hour period will automatically backfire. Annoyingly Catchy Tune: You can sing any 5 minute or shorter song in a tune so catchy that for the next day all people who hear the song (aside from the caster) must make a willpower test (or equivalent) every hour not to quietly sing the words. The lyrics can be whatever you want them to be as long as you can sing them. Nobody can recreate the tune aside from you and any device used to recreate or record the tune malfunctions, rendering the item useless until repaired. Refined Taste: Once per day you may retrieve and rare edible cooking ingredient out of thin air. The item is random, but is always of extremely high quality (relatively speaking) and would always be expensive to purchase in the player's current location. The item could be anything, from Foie Gras to Hakarl to Wagu Beef to White Truffles and will come in a container suitable to holding it. The item may be selected by the DM or taken from a pool of agreed upon items. Items will not exceed one pound in weight and may be less by DM's discretion. Did I Just Say That Out Loud?: Once Per Day you may make anyone (including yourself) 'unsay' something as long as it's within 5 minutes of being spoken. Whatever is unsaid will be treated by all parties involved (except the caster) as never happening. Cartoon Logic: Once per day any target of your choosing(including yourself) may avoid damage by making it funny in a cartoony sort of way. For example: Falling from a large height may leave a you shaped hole in the ground, and will be painful, but any damage taken is negated. If you can not make the act comical the effect will not work.

Just, like, ask your friends not to play as wizards, and if they really want to, at least to try to rein in their powers a little. RPGs are supposed to be cooperative! most of the time at least

I remember building a monk specifically to target and take down spellcasters and it worked quite effectively. As a side-note: I don't know if you guys have heard, but in support of the Iron Gods Adventure Path, they are releasing the Technology Guide.
Ever wondered how a laser gun would function in a world full of magic and traditional fantasy weaponry? Look no farther than the Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Technology Guide! Packed with 64 pages of new technology rules for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, this indispensable resource for Game Masters running adventures in the land of Numeria, the setting of the Iron Gods Adventure Path, will supercharge any fantasy game looking to add futuristic and alien technology. Inside this book you'll find: Scores of technological weapons, armor, and other items, including plasma grenades, force fields, and pharmaceuticals. New uses of skills to interact with technology, allowing players to translate computer code, place and disarm explosives, and disable electronic devices. Rules for crafting technological items. New archetypes allowing existing character classes to specialize in using or battling technology. The technomancer prestige class, frequently used by the members of Numeria's sinister Technic League. Rules for cybernetic implants, power generators, artificial intelligences, and much, much more!
Absolutely nothing Paizo has done prior to this has ever made me more hype than I have right now. I'm going to run Iron Gods the minute it comes out in August. Numeria has always been my favorite region in the Pathfinder campaign setting, even if its one of the least developed. Conan the Barbarian meets lasers and robots?
step 1: stop playing with min-maxers step 2:
Kinda hard to when your best friends are min maxers though. Although they were pretty cool with my house ruling of "no stat below 8, and only one can be below 10" and only a 15-point buy.
Fun > effective, trust me, I play mystic adepts in shadowrun
I don't get why people can't minmax without also RPing. I mean, I minimax my characters to hell and back half the time and have fun with the character's strengths and weaknesses. Isn't minmaxing the first thing you learn to do as an RPer (aka the DM taking your sheet and going "no do it like this")?
Nope, I never really learned or cared for whether my characters were the best or cheesiest they could be. I once played a fighter who fought with two claws à la Wolverine. He couldn't hit shit, but when he crit he could take out most things in a handful of hits. But most of my characters are terribly designed. I just don't have a knack for that kind of stuff.

Playing a 3 Charisma guy you should never talk in a way that doesn't piss people off. With low wisdom, be willing to do things that your common sense would tell you NOT to do. Low int, well... It's not very hard to act out your character as you want to play them. I don't like pointbuy though, because it strongly encourages minmaxy attitudes. 4d6 drop lowest, place where you want is my preferred chargen method.
being halfway decent is not the same as min-maxing
Hence "half the time". There are games where I deliberately try and break the system and minimax to hell first, RP my character that is created from said break after.
no offense, but i would not want to play with you then properly min-maxing will make the game significantly less fun for everyone else, and that's not cool unless they are also all min-maxing just as much and the GM is okay with it in which case it's fine
What's the opposite of min-maxing, ie. designing the worst possible characters? We should do a one-off game like that.

dunno why everyones have a tizzy over 3.5 and min maxers :v my group is having a blast in 3.5. it really depends on the dynamic of the group and how flexible the dm (me in this case) is. .. Oh uh, page king hey look at that, i'll tell ya about last nights session then. so the group finally met the "bbeg" which was really just a old scientist who was really obsessed with his experimentation, and in turn had skewed concepts like, "lets freeze a town over to discover what happens" the mercenaries he hired to assist him in this had partially lied to him (they never helped unfreeze people and one group even killed people during the operations) so after basically telling him he shouldn't freeze towns over anyway, the group leaves and the merc captain stops them on the way out and says "you know too much about our operation and you will not leave this facility alive" queue combat with over 10 mercs and the high level captain himself. Two of the people go unconscious, mainly due to he bad guys getting ridiculous rolls (like literally nat 20's) the scientist was like "noo you bastard you betrayed me and now you're trying to kill more innocent people" and absolutely wrecked their shit. group told me their butts were clenched enough to make diamonds essentially. At least i learned more about proper combat balancing.
What's the opposite of min-maxing, ie. designing the worst possible characters? We should do a one-off game like that.
That sounds like it could be fun actually. Like underdogs or something similar, not total trash but no where near amazing. (if you tried hard enough i'm sure someone could anti-min-max and make something so bad its utterly useless in almost every way)
say hello to my old 3rd edition character i call him "1HP sorcerer"
Or playing any character in AD&D with the minimum stat for their class, and nothing above a 12.
If you're not starting your PCs off with NPC classes, you're doing it wrong.

(if you tried hard enough i'm sure someone could anti-min-max and make something so bad its utterly useless in almost every way)
I've already thought up a character - Grolthar, the half-orc wizard. He made it through Wizard School on an athletic scholarship, so he put points into STR and CON rather than INT or WIS, and his skill ranks focus on climb, swim, ride and acrobatics. However, lacking weapon proficiency and any combat-related feats, he still mostly has to do magic. I'm undecided on the school - I'm thinking Illusionist. And whatever the most useless familiar would be.
Level 0 characters only.
Commoner quest. Final end boss of the campaign is a cat.
