I did get to play for 5 minutes. Blame DiscoInferno for telling me to mention M&M to you.
Disco get off your ass and torment me yourself you lazy brit.
:v:
So I recently started delving headfirst into this game by DMing a game with some friends who had only a little more experience than I and far less passion for storytelling as well. I watched some of Counter Monkey's videos about it and did all the research I could, and two sessions in I seem to be handling this reasonably well, but I got some challenges I wanted to ask you fellows about.
The first is the player with the most experience, playing the party rogue. The big problem is that his experience involves version 3.5, and given that he was a player we picked up later than the rest, we had settled on using 4e. I have no doubt that a lot of people prefer 3.5 for good reasons, but I have never played it, so I'm not entirely certain about how to approach his apathy in regards to how 4e plays. While assuring me that it is no fault of mine, he did admit that he may give up on this because he dislikes the mechanics so much (and I'm glad he is, as it helps me do my job of providing a memorable and enjoyable experience for my friends). So I guess I need to figure out how to either fiddle with the mechanics of 4e to make it play a little more like 3.5 (beyond my scope of knowledge at this point, but I have acquired copies of 3.5 rulebooks and am planning to read them as soon as I stop being a lazy piece of shit), or to figure out how to better play off the mechanics of 4e as they are- probably the more feasible plan- to just make it it's own unique experience.
Additionally, the shaman in our group, has been frustratingly disconnected. She's a huge introvert as a person, that much is known and accepted, but I can't help but feel that she should at least try to involve herself in the story beyond casting heal every time the warrior-tank soaks up damage. Heck, sometimes while I'm attempting to play out the story, she'll have her nose buried in one of the rulebooks. Perhaps the blame could be pinned on me for not being interesting enough. However, her absolute disconnection has begun to bother some of the other party members because her introversion can sometimes come off as cold, or even condescending. I've considered implementing a scene where she gets separated from the party, and without them around to come up with plans, she'll be forced to fend for herself for a bit, and maybe that'll get her foot in the door as far as roleplaying and active planning goes.
So what can I do?
About the guy who prefers 3.5, nothing you can do, let it go, his fault for joining a game running 4e when he knows he doesn't like it.
As for the introvert? Well, not really anything you can do about that either, if that's how she is then that's how she is, you can't change her personality, accept it or kick her out of the group.
i agree on elowin's point on the 3.5 guy they're pretty different, but it isn't too hard to ajust. i played one 4e session after only playing 3.5 and i got a grasp of powers pretty quick. as for the introvert your plan sounds pretty good. if it doesn't work you should probably talk to her about it, try and make her understand that dnd isn't just rolling dice and killing monsters even though that's to thick of it.

the issue here isn't him not understanding 4e rules, it's him not liking them.
Played my first game earlier. Took us about 4 hours to understand the rules and get our character sheets done, but then we played one of the preset dungeons and it was fucking great.
Definitely having a blast with this. Any tips for newbies on the dos and don'ts of d&d?
If you even think there's going to be an eventual PC conflict, it's already getting nasty and will happen.
Does anyone have that pocket RPG image with all the rules and stuff? I used to have it, but I switched to a new computer a few months ago and don't know where to find it again.
Well me and my friend are rping two sort of rival/friends. One is a wisecracking loveable dumbass, and the other is a stern, stoic type with a playful side.
Think Garrus / Wrex if you're familiar with Mass Effect.
As long as you don't make dice rolls with the intent to murder and use common sense it should be fine
in your opinion facepunch, is it a good idea to give a character a very low level npc (as in apprentice level) early on to one of the characters?
also for said character how much xp is needed to advance to first?

If you are talking DnD, there is a feat called Leadership that does that.

I showed this page to the people I play online with after a session fell through due to an absence. So one of our players just made up a joke game on the spot about ducks. It was the most hilarious session I've been a part of. So cheers for a good hour of laughs.

Elaborate.
Elaborate.
There's a spell in Shadowrun that makes everyone everyone jizz and it's called orgy.
I want them to add it to their vidya game.
Or atleast orgasm.
Why isn't that in every game.
Not just jizz, but also gives some serious debuffs.
