God DAMN I am finally fucking DONE with this loredoc.
29 pages, plus a satellite-view map (not going to bother tracing it to make an old-style map, this campaign is taking long enough to start as it is).
Now to start helping the players with character creation. I'm not too worried about mechanics, I mostly want to be there to prod them into coming up with backstory so I can tie it into the actual plot, once I figure out what that plot is. I've got the first four steps of the monomyth ready, just need the next dozen.
so a friend and I are crafting a universe together for DnD campaigns, and we can't quite agree on a point. in regards to massive armies, tactics and such would differ from the historical counterpart. i'm saying, despite that, armies will have tight, compact formations, augmented by spellcasters (wizards, sorcs, warlocks). my friend is leaning on more loose formations, as spellcasters AoE attacks would decimate any formation.
wizards and such are supposed to be fairly rare, so I don't personally believe formations would adapt to spellcasting, unless they're going against a nation known for a large amount of spellcasters

Well, that depends on the setting you're making.
If spellcasters are fairly rare, then you're absolutely right, they would stick to close formations unless they know they're going against spellcasters.
If spellcasters are common, then they would form looser formations to avoid getting utterly annihilated by a single spell.
You should probably also establish around what level is the normal for a human adult, because if most people are within, say, level 1-3 or so, the majority of spellcasters won't have ready access to AoE spells in the first place.

Overabundance of high level spellcasters seems like an allegory for the US gun control.
You protect the general populace from dangerous magical people by making everyone fart magic!
I am currently in an Iron Gods campaign playing a [sp]Russian priest turned gunslinger stuck in Golarion following the events in Reign of Winter[/sp] and god damn is it fun.
Not just the character itself, but the AP is definitely one of Paizo's better ones, perhaps even in the top 5.
Please tell me the character's name is [sp]Father Grigori[/sp]

[sp]Sorry, his name is Sokolov. He is a Musket Master though, so it's not like he'll be using a pistol like some American cowboy.
Another quirk is that the DM allowed me to take the Numerian Archaeologist trait. When I asked how the hell is a Russian supposed to understand Androffan, the DM said "the languages are basically identical."
So I'm playing a cyber-priest with a knack for sharpshooting who speaks fluid Space Russian.[/sp]

Does he bless the party weapons though? He's no Orthodox priest if he doesn't bless the weapons.

Unfortunately he does not, but I'll be sure to do so next time I get a couple potions of magic weapon.

After the AP is over I'm very tempted to have him spread the good word and give God a presence in Golarion (I hear Taldor and Cheliax are looking for a good replacement for Aroden...)

[sp]what's the relevance of pistol slinging cowboys? If you didn't get my reference, Grigori is the Russian priest from Ravenholm in Half Life 2, who wields a shotgun named Annabelle[/sp]

[sp]It means that, like Grigori, he only uses two-handed firearms, unlike most Gunslingers who alternate between pistols and rifles.[/sp]
Dai, go ahead and post the notes from last session if you haven't.
Highlights include the dwarf mouthing-off to a bunch of soldiers and then being wrong, and the same dwarf getting face-blasted with a dragonborn's breath attack.
Also, anarchy at a Dragon Cult camp.
sure. Hoard of the Dragon Queen spoilers abound, still basically the first 'day' of the whole thing to start.
re-summed up from my notes a bit: http://pastebin.com/dVahHu92
called it quits there, will start next week on the way out. Also we need collapsible spoiler/readmore boxes for FP, I'll put that on garry's labpunch todo list if it's not there already
So here's a tricky Pathfinder question for you:
If you're wearing breastplate armor, but not the breastplate itself, what sort of armor would that be counted as?
Obviously there's more to the armor than just the breastplate itself, since you at the very least need some padding underneath, and logically would have some arm/leg armor as well (since full-body chainmail has the same AC - how could you get a similar AC with zero arm/leg protection?).
Historically, I would have expected the inner armor to be chainmail as well, but that doesn't seem to work in-game since it would actually worsen your dex bonus and ACP to take off the breastplate. So should it count as hide armor? Leather armor, maybe? Gameplay-wise I think studded leather makes the most sense, since that halves your armor class bonus, but improves your dex bonus and ACP quite a bit.
Any thoughts?

You're expecting Pathfinder's rules to make logical sense regarding armor when it makes you harder to hit instead of reducing the damage you take.
You may want to look at Piecemeal Armor or Armor as Damage Reduction.
I thought I stumbled upon some kind of black ops classified documents shit

Update: The blood mage is a lesbian.
[editline]23rd September 2014[/editline]
This did not stop the Troll from trying to convince her to do things which was just plain creepy and ended with 5 minutes of us telling him no in various ways.
[editline]23rd September 2014[/editline]
Also I feel like I've achieved something great here I got a fucking magical lodge set up, raised my willpower, and learned a new spell that will practically paralyze anybody with cybernetics during the downtime we got.

I, on the other hand, turned down my pay (I found out it was gang money), went to Mexico and engaged in a fairly hairy fistfight, came back to help save the day and then got kicked out of my shitty apartment because I had no money.
My runner is now sleeping on siberys' couch
How to get away with anything in my game group:
Step 1: Do something blatantly nefarious and/or secretive
Step 2: Barely cover it up with the loosest definition of cleanup
Step 3: Get away with it and have NOBODY question anything.
Step 4: Strive to do something more blatant next game
Step 5: Repeat with modification from step 4.

This week's session pf PTU was rather fun. Highlights include but are not limited to:
- freaky visions of a laughing, red eye at the home of the missing twins we're looking for
- discovering that some of the druddigon and talonflame up in the mountains have fucking armor
- learning from the local farmers that there's apprently tales of a society of nidokings/queens that live in said mountains and tame said pokemon
- a cowboy, a pirate, and a soldier walk into a bar...
- [NOIR INTENSIFIES]
- talking about our less-than-legal plans to insinuate ourselves with what we assume is the mob, led by a gardevoir
- said mob turning out to be the undercover secret police of the city
- agreeing to help smuggle some weapons out of the city (to keep them out of local terrorist hands) in exchange for leads on the girls' location
- getting into a gunfight during said job with tommygun-wielding punks
- [BOUNCE]
- after clearing those out cue the harsh noise overlaid doom metal
-- two fuckers with red eye masks that fling two-handed swords like boomerangs
-- an armored fucker with a giant scrap axe and some sort of blood magic
-- fucking pyramid head in pokemon form (gussied-up conkeldurr)
-- my first magical girl transformation of the game
[sp][BOUNCE] being notable because it's fucking hilarious- it's a two-turn move, first you jump high up and then you come down on the target. in practice, this means the horse I was riding flew 50 feet into the air, hung there for the rest of the round, then flew 90 feet horizontally before coming down like a hammer[/sp]

Still need to finish the dungeon design and make a few pre-written speeches and descriptions before my trainwreck of a campaign is done.
Half following a adventure path book is a surprisingly good way to do a campaign.

A lot better than completely following one.
Still far worse than doing your own thing.
