Problem is it's not exactly easy to be doing both hackery things and physical things at the same time.
And hacking requires a pretty large skillset to be truly versatile.
Hacking is one of the few things in SR that you can be fairly good at with a few skills and a load of money instead of the other way around. You're not going to rival actual deckers or anything but you can be a massive pain in the ass.
VR hackers can fuck people up, main problem is the cost of a cyberdeck and programs, but an urban brawl based game probably involves mad cash so you're gonna end up pretty powerful against other sams and generic goons.
[editline]6th October 2014[/editline]
And probably make riggers cry if you can destroy any thing you can't hack.
I mean urban brawl is just a side-job for us right now, to get money to continue fucking with the Yakuza and doing other, more typical shadowruns, but honestly we've only run into 3 deckers so far, one of whom was high out of her mind and not a threat, one whom I nearly killed through the internet in Canada, and the last one from last night who was running in AR and jumped out, shutting down her whole team's comms in the process, after I'd gotten two marks on her
Honestly, our GM is more concerned with trying to figure out magic (which we seem to have stupid arguments about every session) than Matrix stuff so so far I've been able to handle all of our threats without needing to drop into VR, since like I said I'm also a combatant and our backup medic so unless some serious bigshot shows up I can leave defense to my Agent, while still doing all that other stuff
But again, we've only been up against deckers so far, no runs on corps or other places with serious security systems to worry about so I haven't had serious need for VR hacking

You can do some things with just one skill, but in order to truly open up the infinite possibilities of hacking, you need quite a few.

Shit, I meant AR hackers :V Since that lets you do regular shit if you need to and no dumpshock, it's a good middle ground.

Yeah, but if you're just wanting to fuck up drones and smartguns in a fight, that relies more on gear than skills.

gives you distraction penalties though
Yeah, but if you're just wanting to fuck up drones and smartguns in a fight, that relies more on gear than skills.
not really.
you need skills for hacking just as much as anything else.

Think that's only for perception tests in meatspace, though, and even then only in really busy areas
Of course GM discretion so it's all dependent on that
Hey so me and a group of guys are going to play Traveller for the first time on roll20 but we need another player. First session is on friday at 7-8 PM eastern coast time, we're looking to play semi-seriously. No mic required most of us will be using text
If anyone wants to join go ahead and PM me, I can send the rules if needed
edit: found a player, full for now. i'll post again if we have any more openings
I finally used telekinesis and this weird artifact thing we got in Traveller to try and do something cool.
The GM responded by having the anime mecha girl I tried it on fly over and almost insta-kill me.
RIP
Anyone with experience doing Skype D&D sessions? My groups always run into scheduling problems, but for some reason they are all convinced that it just wouldn't work online. How well do they run compared to a in-person session?

It works fine, but just like in offline games, you have to find a timespot where everyone is available, which is often not easy.
Does anyone know of a tool for calculating loot drops? I think i'm slowly going insane from rolling these percentile dice.
Just make shit up, that's what I do.
Depending on your system, there's also random loot generators you can use online. Are you running any kind of D&D or Pathfinder variant?

Respectfully rats, nobody could have predicted that many 6's were going to come down
In any case, yay, I kind of sort of did a conclusion for my epic space traveller. It was all kind of a mess but I managed to wrap up the plot the players had been involved in, had an epic space battle followed by a huge ground fight, then about an hour of me blabbering on about plotty nature-of-the-enemy stuff before we ended it, player's ship now embedded in long-lost Earth, most of their crew still alive, and if we ever pick up the game again I'm going to have to do a lot of headscratching to figure out where I'm going to bring it from there
But as far as conclusive-but-not-final endings go I think I did OK
D&D 3.5
My housemate's been running it, but he's given me permission to take the party to a new city and run a few sessions there as it doesn't interfere with the main campaign. It's my first time being DM. Got some gangs lined up with hideouts that effectively work as dungeons, and I need to re-roll loot a lot to make sure I get stuff that makes sense.
I wouldn't recommend using what this generates out of the box but you can use this as a basis and then figure out loot from there.

Yeah, this is a very useful tool if you want to quickly figure loot out. It often needs tweaking to fit your own requirements because the rolls can sometimes get insane or make no sense.
Alright, I'm set to GM Pathfinder for a party of noobs this weekend. I've played a few sessions of Pathfinder myself and everyone else either has a similar level of experience of completely none. They're going to generate characters and I'm going to take them through a basic level 1 module I found on the internet- Master of the Fallen Fortress if you happen to know it.
Any tips or known pitfalls for newbie GMs? I'm really excited and think it'll go smoothly and I'm just wondering if there's anything I should know before diving in.

Never tell them "you can't do that". Even if they can't, let them roll and then describe how they failed horribly

The favorite words of all GMs.
You can try.
I love it when people try to use knowledge checks on things that clearly won't help them and my DM's usual response.
"I roll for knowledge: nature to see what is up with that tree, it seems off. I rolled an 18."
"Yup, that's definitely a tree. It also looks like it's alive, probably."
:v:
[editline]8th October 2014[/editline]
Make sure that the higher the roll they get, the more descriptive you are. I can tell you that during that very same mission another party member rolled a nat20 for the same question just thinking the other guy didn't meet the DC, and my DM simply went into unnecessarily deep detail about the tree's biomechanical functions and photosynthesis :v:

One of my favorite things to do was when my party would check doors all the time, despite me almost never trapping doors during my campaign.
"I'm checking the door"
"It's a door."

It was pretty friggin epic, only game I've ever been able to burn my mind to power an ultimate electro-whip.

Really? My favorite words are "you detect no traps".
Mine more or less end up being "Hahahahahah... Hahaha. Heh."
Never tell them "you can't do that". Even if they can't, let them roll and then describe how they failed horribly
This seems exactly my style. Thank you.
I'm feeling pretty confident about this. I'll let you guys know about it later. Appreciate the help.

he's not joking
if I had the money to do it and could do it without failing all our runs I would be levelling every structure we need to enter in Shadowrun because the level of ambush we have to deal with is almost unreal
Edit:
The words I keep finding myself saying are "That's what it appears to be..." usually when asked explicitly if something is or isn't something when someone hasn't figured it out IC

Don't worry I asked 4chan for ideas on what to throw you at next run, so it'll be a different level of crazy you need to cope with, heh.

Time to scour /srg/ for people asking for advice.
[editline]8th October 2014[/editline]
I have no idea how to deal with any of these suggestions anyways but they sound like they could be fun to deal with.
I wish we'd get ambushed
milspec armour noone's shot at and a railgun I haven't shot yet

be careful of what you wish
im a squishy elf, we've got two mages and a decker as well, and all four are prime targets to pop a cap in the butts
okay, sure, a milspec armor tank-fellow is sort of intimidating. but the rest of us can catch the deads quick.
