Wouldn't be surprised if it's super rare because no game tends to account for those double digit god-like NPCs to break their neck when descending down a stairway in their super overdecorated castle.
Because they wouldn't. At least not in DnD, after the first two couple of levels.
Because they wouldn't. At least not in DnD, after the first two couple of levels.
Rule 0 applies even to D&D.
Rule 0 applies even to D&D.
Sure, but any GM who thinks that's appropriate outside of a joke campaign at even remotely high levels needs to get slapped. People who can survive being directly hit by a massive rock fired from a catapult do not die from falling down the stairs.
The DM might cite the chunky salsa rule with that rock example.
The DM might be a dumbass. If you want a game that's not about mythical heroes, you really shouldn't be playing DnD beyond the first three levels or so. It simply doesn't work if you look at it critically in any capacity.
you simply don't work get a job hippie
im not a hippy im just a massive raging faggot also if you think you should be insta killed by a catapult, how are you going to justify surviving a fully grown dragons breath which is clearly far more powerful yh lets just make every high level enemy insta kill everything this is fun isnt it while we're at it, i think we should make meteor swarm into a "no save just die" spell, and increase it's radius by like a few hundred kilometers

So, if a high level guy saw a catapult boulder being chucked at him in a battle he'd apply his magical/heroic skills to partially avoid, or, if he's that badass, absorb the impact. But if the same guy was attending the wedding of the emperor's daughter and a couple of creative gnome assassins attempted to murder the guy by catapulting a boulder on him, yeah, I'd say he wouldn't be able to react to it.

Goddamn you guys are fucking serious about falling down stairs. Also, a lot of people die from falling every year, it's the second largest cause of accidental death. So...
Last night we got jumped by some guys on an overhang. They leapt down on us, and the Cleric put his shield up in an attempt to absorb the impact. The guy rolled a one, landed feet first on the shield, slipped, and then flipped over and landed on his head, snapping his neck, and killing him instantly. The other guy rolled a 20 and dropkicked the fighter in the chest.
Works for Dark Souls, and everyone seemsvto like that about the game for some reason.
skill based video games and tabletop RPGs are largely incomparable. also dark souls rules, discoinferno drools [editline]31st December 2014[/editline]
Goddamn you guys are fucking serious about falling down stairs.
Please, remind us how many people die from ogres/goblins/kobolds/fantasy
Untold thousands of lives are wasted on them, which is pretty much the same thing.
And so the D&D thread ends another successful year, not looking forward to new shit being released soon/Drakesmouth, but rather arguing itself with how stair murder mechanics actually work. It's probably written down in GURPS [sp]or FATAL[/sp], but we can't really know that, can we now?

In fact, it's easier for a Space Marine to die falling down a flight of stairs than it is for him to die fighting thousands of Tyranids. Which is true to the Space Marine experience, I suppose.
Yeah but they weigh 700 pounds so it makes sense that falling over isn't a good thing when you're a Space Marine.
wait they only weigh 700 pounds?
2d6 damage tops
Well in 5th edition there is "Damage severity and level" in the dmg, I guess falling down the stairs would be a setback i mean i've survived falling down stairs before, then thats 1d10 damage, seems fine. Could kill a 1st level character but unlikely to. Maybe save for half dangerous for 1st-4th level is 2d10 and deadly is 4d10 so if you have some really dangerous stairs i guess you could use those instead
Meanwhile, in my pbp game:
"Of course. If you need men, then you can have some. But do not take too many people lest you attract attention to yourse-" The King stops when a man with purple hair and eyes runs in from the left out the door. "Faejuran forces have snuck through the secret passageway under the castle! They have infiltrated the lower Keep and have disabled the anti-magic field!" A warm orange glow shines through the window as a searing heat is felt by everyone in the room. "IT'S A FIREBALL! GET DOWN!"
wait they only weigh 700 pounds?
That's probably before armor and wargear
They also have this really heavy medical bracelet in case they fall down.
