Just played an extremely improv game of dnd. We used a pretty simple playersheet with just some simple mechanics. I was an elephant who could convince anyone to do just about anything. I convinced a shopkeeper I was his long-deceased mother and went like 15 turns (While my team was off doing other things) going around with him just to be able to take items from him.
I'm really new to DnD and it's really fun, sucks there's no places nearby :(

That's not entirely accurate.
Any one of the metahuman species give birth to their own kind, so trolls give birth to trolls and dwarves give birth to dwarves. If crossbreeding is involved, the child is almost always determined by the female parent.
Human offspring, specifically, has a tiny chance of becoming any other kind of metahuman. In the case of becoming a dwarf or an elf, 99% of the time they are born as one, whereas with trolls and orcs, 99% of the time they turn into one during puberty.
The reason this is the case is pretty simply illustrated by the few times where, due to some freak magical bullshit, a human does end up giving birth to a troll, which is fatal about 99% of the time.

Not going to rule out the possibility of some strange obscure game somewhere doing that, but I highly doubt there's anything more than that. And if it exists, I sure don't know about it.

I'd be tempted to try Cyberpunk 2020 if its horrendously outdated hacking system was updated. I love Shadowrun but once in a while I would like to try a "pure" cyberpunk game. No pixie marines, no elf hackers, no troll technomancers. Just good ol'chrome and dystopia in Night City.

I prefer to keep my characters' backstories brief and vague, to provide enough space for the character to grow from the adventures they go through.
Alternatively, I actually -like- it when the system, so to say, "hands me" a character as-is, especially if it's the kind I wouldn't play on my own. I appreciate a challenge outside my comfort zone.
True, Cyberpunk is a bit of a mess, but it is a hilariously 80s old-fashioned mess of 2kool4skool stuff and already outdated technology predictions and I love it.

where'd you get that 10% thing? genuinely curious
You make an Athletics skill check, just like a regular attack, with the weapon range determined by your body type x10, [i]if you miss[/i] you then roll on this table

grenades' explosion range is 5m, so if you're at least 15m from the target, you're [i]never[/i] going to blow yourself up, unless of course you score a crit failure and [i]then[/i] you roll an 8,9 or 10 (1-4 is 'you just fail', 5-7 is 'minor failure' so I'd just have you whiff the throw and sprain your wrist or whatever, 8-10 is 'abysmal failure' so that could mean dropping a nade, and even then I'd only rule you actually drop it on your feet if you score a 10)
so that's a 10% chance to score a critfail, then a 30% chance to blow yourself up if the GM's a 'by the book' type and 10% if they're not, which means it's either a 3% chance RAW, or a 1% chance if it was me GMing
and I'd probably still give you another Athletics check to let you dive behind something, assuming that was an option that is.
Seriously, as much as I like to joke about that AV thing, I feel pretty bad about letting it happen (and it did pretty transparently happen because the party was already tired of your shit, by the way), and I feel like I've learnt a lot since then (or at least enough to gently let you know you should cut that shit out instead of doing the worst possible thing). Don't blame the system for my fuckups.
