Gonna be playing my first game ever this thursday. Im very excited
I ended up DMing my first game with a few idiot friends a few days after my friend gave me a half-hearted explanation of how to do it given over Steam chat while I was playing Minecraft and not really paying too much attention.
And I turned out to be an awful DM! :v: which is for some reason why I still have a party of raving idiots who seem to think I'm marginally competent enough to play with every Saturday evening.
Being a good DM is a lot less about knowing the rules and the game itself than it is just being really good at improvising
Besides, your players find it much more fun when you let them do things that aren't strictly codified in the rules
That also gives you all sorts of wonderful opportunities to screw them over

Yeah, I know how it goes. One character I put in two sessions ago, I did literally within 10 seconds of the party entering the room she was in. A little girl. I did it mostly because I decided I wanted to see how the party would react to a crying little 6 year old girl.
Apparently one of my players got so attached to her from the 5 minutes they talked to her that he wanted to play as her. So after that session we all agreed on a 12 year time jump, just because he wanted to play as that 6 year old girl. Now she's an 18 year old girl who shoots lightning from her hands and has an affinity for energy-based weaponry.
I must be doing something right as a DM if the party finished one part of the story arc I had semi-planned out, coming to a total of 8 games. The 9th game started after the 12 year time jump we agreed on, and the 10th game should happen this Saturday.
Best possible advice for new DMs.
Rules are just a guideline.
If you don't know a rule that covers something, make it up. If you know a rule, but think it doesn't fit in the situation, ignore it. If following a rule would make the game less fun, ignore it or change it.

I can only imagine what would have happened if you critfailed that roll.
When you said "roll" my heart skipped a beat.

Yeah, nice job shooting the Teddy Bear of a 6 year old girl whose parents probably just died, if they hadn't before.
That's SO gonna bite you in the ass later.

Said little girl ALSO turned out to be the sister of Ryan's character, so I ended up playing as the sister of my replacement's character who was adopted by my other character :v
I've been searching for a reliable group since late November now and I had no luck finding one.
Does anyone need an additional player? I just want to play after such a long time.
Finding a good group is the hardest part of any game.
The worst part of GMing an awesome session of something is when the following session isn't nearly as awesome or action packed.
Sorry Dark Heresy. Sort of rushed things a little too, will make it up to you next session.

I hope you're ready for disappointment and regret for Spycraft this Sunday :)

And we're sorry for spending 3 hours on figuring out what gear to buy, and for plotting to take over a feudal world and sacrificing its inhabitants to Slaanesh instead of being good little acolytes.
Righto, I'm throwing together a system based on the one used in the Dragon Age RPG for use with the Elder Scrolls setting. Now, whilst they used Mana for spells which I much prefer to Vancian casting or 4e style powers, I was wondering how to give fighter types interesting stuff. Do you think using stamina for a similar system for them would work? Or if you have any other ideas then shoot, I could use some :v:
Give them a bunch of different attacks and attack styles based on class and race and stuff and have those attacks use stamina as if it were mana or something.

It's okay. I really expected a little downtime after the warp-fuckery that we went through last session.
And there is nothing wrong with a little downtime.

And by downtime I do of course mean having someone shoot at you with a sniper rifle in the middle of the woods.

should've pmed
Anyone want to play Stars Without Number?
It's an easy and customizable system where we get to explore space and get into our own adventures (including conquering and/or trading). I have the books and I can send them through Skype.
Oh lawd, my first DM session went pretty good had a warrior that ripped off a stone door with a 20 and made the whole foundations of the dungeon tremble and thrown it at the skeleton that was waiting in the next room, also the same warrior ripped off the end bosses skull and now is carrying it around while it curses and insults him all the time. Sorcerer accidently set the whole party on fire with his fire cone spell.
A cleric that failed at everything. And a rogue who looted shit while the party is being molested by enemies.
So, I added some guy to my work fallout game yesterday. We work at a summer camp, so I just gave him a character sheet and the rulebook. Behold, MC:
Character Name: Michael Christopher (MC)
Super Mutant
Appearance: 9 feet tall, bald, wearing massive parachute pants.
Unarmed (after the first level up): 75%, just enough for a hammer punch.
Weapon: MC's Hammer. 4d6+MD.
In the encounter where he meets the party, he gets attacked by three ghouls. The first two fall to gunfire, and then he promptly rolls a two, screams "It's hammer time", and turns the third ghouls head into a fine mist with a hammer punch.

I'm absolutely positive that it's been done before, but I found it wildly amusing.
1st session:
2 players play as brother and sister. One gets drunk and does nothing while the town is attacked by goblins. The other pretty much helps, sometimes being less than useful. After they save the town, they try to break into the stables where they stored their horses, broke the lock and THEN woke up the owner to ask him to open it. They nearly assaulted him after he said that the lock was too broken to even open, and to wait until morning for a locksmith. They leave after he pulls a flintlock pistol, come back the next morning, pay for damages get their animals. Decide to set up camp on the beach adjacent to town.
2nd session:
They decide to commit some theft and head to the jewelers. They try to steal a gold ring in front of the store owner, his wife, and 2 guards. 1 manages to get away with the ring, other gets nabbed by guards. Brought to prison, other goes to beach to put away ring. Guards start searching for him. They eventually find him, bring him to prison too.
They both decide to refuse to pay fines even though they can afford it by a large margin.
They get sent to a larger city for long term prison sentence, and roll new characters.
Why

No such thing as too awkward when it comes to D&D.

Now they are playing as dwarven fighters, and are literally identical in all stats. One of them basically speaks only in gibberish poems.

Yeah, you can be too idiotic and too dickish, but not too awkward.
Also, why is mouthbreathers an insult? People have sinus issues and shit, they can't help it.

That's rough. I DM'd for someone whose character was centered solely around being a bitch, and had no motivation to investigate plot hooks or even join in with the other two players on the cool shit they decided to do when not directly involved with stuff I'd planned. She also left another player's character unconscious in an uncharted, notoriously dangerous forest where they'd just fought a troll.
