Friendly reminder/announcement for anybody I may have forgotten to tell: No Pathfinder today because my family is moving and I won't have internet again until Monday, at least.
I've never understood feminists.
Heaven forbid if you start Facepunch sexism debate #1 googolplex I will malice you with a wet sock. Anyway: its not really a setting issue Inferno, its an artwork issue. Apparently the art piece was, er, too sexy? i don't even know and I'm too mentally tired to go back to the EP forums to find out
I've never understood feminists.
Take it to SH, tumblr or mass debate if you want to argue about feminism please.
I've never understood feminists.
i dont get feminists either but pls dont start shitstorm pls we get enough of that from all the edition wars most of which i start
Could you use English for that first sentence?
Sorry, living in Tokyo and having to type on a smart phone aren't good combos for Engish I'm saying that the pregenerated character in Transhuman was extremely similar to your EP character. Not just the synthetic skin part, I mean the character concept itself. Although one thing the pregen doesn't have that Eve did: conspire with a fellow AGI to create seed AI :v:
So I got one of those red box starter kits, and I've basically read both the DM and Player books at least 3 times each, but it'll be my and my friends' first times playing D&D. Can I get some advice on making a not-sucky campaign, or is this something that just happens while you play? I don't want my first time to end terribly :v:

But what about things like plot. Do I just make up a simple plot and build up on it as we move on, or should I plan the whole story? Also, for encounters, should I predetermine them or another on-the-spot situation?

And maybe try to throw in a few plot hooks, so you don't do like I did and have plots arise purely from your players arriving in a town. It will also be very worth it to have your players write their characters a backstory; minimum 3 sentences. Or at least have them do the 3 wants, 3 beliefs thing, so you have things to work off of for making character-specific scenarios/encounters.

You will fuck up. Those are facts that too many beginner DMs ignore or pretend don't exist. Perfect mastery of the rules, they insist, is the key to a fun game. I know because I was one of those beginner DMs. Basically, the key is: just have fun. While its important as a DM to have a good idea on the rules, don't be enslaved by them. That being said, stick with premade adventures. Unless you're a really creative person I wouldn't even try making an actual campaign plot until you're comfortable with being the DM. Maybe have a rough outline, but that's it. Assuming you bought the 4Th edition Red Box, just stick to the premade adventures in that. If you're willing to shell out more bucks and you and your pals enjoy it, go for the Essentials line: the DM's Toolkit or whateverits called, the Monster Vault, and the other Essentials products whose names I really can't recall atm (smart phone prevents me from just googling it atm) Just look up DND essentials and you'll know what I mean Oh and everyone and their mother will have their own entrenched opinion on why [x] edition sucks and how [y] edition is better. Id honestly steer cleer of arguments like that and just figure out what works best for you and your group. One more thing: if you got time, look up on Youtube the DnD Robot Chicken game. Chris Perkins runs a game for the guys behind robot chicken and you can really learn a lot from those videos.
But what about things like plot. Do I just make up a simple plot and build up on it as we move on, or should I plan the whole story? Also, for encounters, should I predetermine them or another on-the-spot situation?
You can either plan out the whole plot, which would include having to plan for everything the players might do, or just threw them a few plot hooks that they may or may not latch on to, and plan things around what they do, as-it-happens. Encounters are mostly up to you. It can help to plan them out a bit in advance, even if you are making them up on the fly, so that you can pull the necessary tokens/minis and stuff out when the time comes, instead of having to go searching for them. [editline]10th August 2013[/editline] Also as LiquidNazgul said, the 'rules' are more suggestions, or guidelines. You don't need to follow them 100%.
But what about things like plot. Do I just make up a simple plot and build up on it as we move on, or should I plan the whole story? Also, for encounters, should I predetermine them or another on-the-spot situation?
All of those are ok to do, it just depends on what you and the players enjoy and are comfortable with. But for encounters I usually have a list of semi-prepared ideas and choose/pick randomly from it.
Thanks for the help, guys. We're starting on Friday, so I have quite a while to get ready for anything. Is it a good or a bad idea for my friends to make characters in advance?
Thanks for the help, guys. We're starting on Friday, so I have quite a while to get ready for anything. Some people do a short preparation session to just brainstorm, see what other players are doing or ask about rules (Partially good idea for new people).
Oh, one more question. As far as the map goes, will I just describe the scene and one of the players draws it into the map, or will I draw it in to show how big the room/field/whatever is, what's in it, any kinds of cover, etc.?
I'd draw it myself, but either works, DMing is a very flexible thing, just give it a try and see what things work for you.

Why do people argue that sort of stuff in eclipse phase when gender identity and what sex you are is like the most malleable thing this is a future where you can literally decide to change your junk if you get bored of it. There's implants that let you do it without leaving the comfort of your own home [editline]10th August 2013[/editline] Imagine social networking [editline]10th August 2013[/editline] @RegularTranshuman got bord so growing a penis LOL [editline]10th August 2013[/editline] #YOLF
Again its not a setting problem, its an artwork problem. People are also bitching about sexism regarding a certain creature in Numenera and that takes place a billion years in the future. Concepts, not the settig, is where people are up in arms about.
I know apparently a lot of people got pissed over the pig boobs. Not even a euphemism I mean [t]http://i.imgur.com/kt3oVuX.jpg[/t] ???
I don't know if my time online has jaded me but I didn't even bat an eyelid when I saw boobpig.
I don't know if my time online has jaded me but I didn't even bat an eyelid when I saw boobpig.
It certainly had the intended effect on me. I'm not really sure Id allow something like that if I wanted to run at least a semi-serious game of horror and conspiracy. There's Eclipse Phase weird and then there's that pig
I've never understood feminists.
In the interest of education I must reply: Males do not have the same social pressure for physical perfection as females. That should be obvious and there's plenty of research and studies into it out on the web if you want to know the fine details.
So I got one of those red box starter kits, and I've basically read both the DM and Player books at least 3 times each, but it'll be my and my friends' first times playing D&D. I don't want my first time to end terribly :v:
Getting a pre-made campaign would be your best option. Read it through ahead of time, and then make any changes you want, adding fluff or things that are specific to your players characters. This will give you an easy frame-work to expand from and to test your creative skills. If you find yourself easily adding your own content then you can try your hand at custom campaigns next time. You don't want to overload yourself for your first session. If you can, always base the campaign around your players strengths (which will also base them on anothers weakness, it will balance out) so everyone can have their class be useful to the party and their chance to shine (thus it's important they make their characters before hand, and that you know what they are -- unless you are good at creating content on-the-fly).
But what about things like plot. Do I just make up a simple plot and build up on it as we move on, or should I plan the whole story? Also, for encounters, should I predetermine them or another on-the-spot situation?
You can plan out an entire story, but remember that your players (if you allow them) have the ability to ruin it utterly, for better or worse. Always be flexible (especially on the framework of the story, players can occasionally add to it and improve it through their actions), otherwise you will rail-road them -- though some people like strict adventures. As for encounters, if you're not comfortable with on-the-fly ones you can use one of the many dozens of generators on the web, or if you have a pre-made campaign (which should have encounters) you can use those or use them as a framework to customize.
Thanks for the help, guys. We're starting on Friday, so I have quite a while to get ready for anything. Is it a good or a bad idea for my friends to make characters in advance?
Always a good thing, mostly so you can play when you meet up and not spend half the time making characters. Make sure they communicate with each other (or to you, and you to the rest of the players) on what they're going to be before the play-date arrives (unless you want it to be mysterious, but then be ready to handle a party full of Wizards).

I'm pretty sure these are the best things ever.
