glad I use the nexus.
just you wait until nexus mods lose support and become workshop-only
Um isn't this kind of illegal
This can be far worse than you'd think. This sets a bad precedent for modding communities. I can appreciate that they are helping modders earn some money on their (often) hard work, but outright charging for it is ridiculous. Whats keeping the creators from taking down their mods in Nexus and other sites then selling solely on Workshop? Wheres the motivation to make quality content that people would want to donate to show their appreciation? It may not be too bad now, but do not underestimate greed, it only can get worse from here on. If this turns out to be a success, not so much for the creators but for Valve who gets 75% of the proceeds, whats keeping EA from doing the same thing? Sure, more games than ever may get mod support, but is it really worth have all this content put behind paywalls? That is DLC, not user-created content.
Can't wait till mods go early access with "Pay to help development!!!" mods that take the money and never put out anything.
should be 15% at the most lol
This is fucking absolute and undistilled fucking cancer. Like it's one of the worst thing i saw in years straight up.
I'm afraid that this will drag most of the modders to the workshop now.
My respect for Valve was already waning, but this pretty much killed it. I'm pretty damn sure it's illegal to sell mods in general, and Valve is taking all of the profits anyways.
When does the lawsuit happen? I hope they get their fucking undies sued off.

I dunno. The biggest appeal to modding is that they're basically free addons. I doubt many people would be willing to pay for them.

oh god i called it
it's fucking happening, rip nexus

I'm thinking... If Sydney gives the okay, we might put Realistic Lighting Overhaul on Steam Workshop as a "Pay what you want" option. So it's free if you want it to be but you can also support us (And by Us, I mean mainly Sydney) you can do that too.
Time to make 15 second shitty mods and throw them on the workshop for $5.
This is beyond stupid. This completely defeats the purpose of modding, and is just another attempt by Valve to continue their micro-transaction environment. They're pretty much turning it into the TF2 store now. Good job Valve, enjoy your million micro-transactions.

Pretty sure Valve and Bethesda are doing this together.

are you fucking kidding me I was literally just praising wet and cold for making it free on the nexus and cost on the workshop because he was talking about "pay what you want"
I dunno. The biggest appeal to modding is that they're basically free addons. I doubt many people would be willing to pay for them.
You would be surprised. But the way i see things is that, if a mod author know he can make some cash out of his mod, he will try getting some. What is stopping him from removing his mod from the Nexus and reuploading in on the Workshop with a paywall ? Nothing. And he probably will.
I'm sure you can see how things are getting problematic here. This stupid fucking shit is a potential mod scene killer.
edit : funny how what i said is proving itself right, see post above
It's okay. All the good mods are on the nexus anyway.
The thing is Workshop is more comfortable if you have the game on Steam, it installs them automatically from the web after subscribing.

Mod organizer and nexus mod manager already does that. Literally the only reason to use the steam workshop is because some mods are only uploaded there.
The thing is Workshop is more comfortable if you have the game on Steam, it installs them automatically from the web after subscribing.
does that on the nexus too, if you use the manager. you can't manage your mods as well using the workshop.

I'm okay with the concept of donations as long as you can still get it for free, but I don't know why they set it up like this. It should be "Pay what you want" including $0 if you don't want to donate.
These paywall mods aren't going to stay behind a paywall for long when the creators realize nobody's buying their shit and are instead using other mods and when they realize their mods will get pirated like anything else that's charged.
Let's have a quick list of the mods you can get and for what price, shall we ?
Hey this is on steam right ? And when the workshop was introduced valve made a portal 2 mod right ? So here's a DOTA 2 overpowered sword for a dollar ! Get it, that's thematic, I don't need effort if I'm being thematic !
A lazy two-part quest that adds an OP sword wtih a shitty model for half a dollar
An ugly hammer with a cookie-cutter storm damage enchantment that you can probably disenchant and lose forever, for half a dollar
An ugly out of place armor set for two dollars that doesn't have a female variant and that you have to cheat in because there's no way to obtain it via ingame means
A boring underground location that probably acts as just another loot-dump where you sell your shit to merchants with too much gold when you can't find anyone else. No mention of Voice Acting either, so it probably uses cookie cutter generic responses too. That's supposed to be worth 3 bucks ?
An armor that is apparently made of chrome and that uses symmetrical textures everywhere. Also comes with a weaponized chrome meat tenderizer for only a buck and a half !
A notoriously unoptimized CPU vacuum that gives people backpacks, hoods and ubmrellas when it rains. Also fucks pretty badly with other mods and does not include the Ashes addon for Dragonborn compatibility. Suggested price is five bucks, somehow.
A mod that uses FNIS, which is not bundled in with the download. They also want to increase the price as they add "new feature" to a fucking FISHING MINIGAME that's rng based. A mod did this a while back and also added sailable fucking ships, it didn't ask for two bucks either.
"I removed clutter and allowed the player to add his own clutter instead, in an area which no one goes to anyway because nobody sides with the fucking vampires, and anyone can do that for free in ten seconds in CK. Give me three dollars !"
Climates of Tamriel except you need to pay three bucks for it.
Hey look it's more overpowered cookie cutter weapons. The description is hilariously lazy too.
A mod that's available for free on the nexus and is honestly quite boring. That's worth 3 bucks and a half ?
Pay a dollar for this overpowered weapon that ragdolls enemies, deals more damage than they have HP, and casts a TWO MINUTE LONG SOUL TRAP on them ! Because playing the game really is too difficult !
Ever felt like magic was underpowered in Skyrim ? Well you can now pay above five dollars for this mod that gives you a series of completely fucking overpowered dumb spells, since that's easier than to get it for free on the nexus or install free overhauls that actually fix magic. Now with a bonus retarded magic carpet that looks like your character really needs to take a huge dovahshit.
GUYS DO YOU GET IT WE LIKE DOTA PLEASE PAY US A DOLLAR FOR THIS OVERPOWERED UGLY AS FUCK WEAPON
I really liked darksiders please give me three bucks for this set of armor and weapons that don't fit the art style at all
DOTA 2 ANYONE I NEED A DOLLAR PLEASE
Pay a dollar for ugly artwork of an ugly piece of armor with no ingame screenshot of said armor so you don't even know if it's a scam or not.
Yet another obnoxious female follower. Notice how the apachii hair was cut from the paid version because they couldn't ask people to download a huge fucking mod just for one follower. Now with over 150 lines of a woman being annoying as fuck.
There is a pay what you want box when you set up the mod for sale, but I didn't check to see if it let you put in $0 or not.
In other news, I just uploaded the Something Special for Someone Special for $99.99. Lets see if it gets approved
There is a pay what you want box when you set up the mod for sale, but I didn't check to see if it let you put in $0 or not.
You can't. The author puts up the price. He got the freedom to put a fixed price, or not but most of the time you HAVE to spend something to use the mod, therefore creating a paywall.
I love the comments calling people entitled. They don't seem to understand that the whole point of mods is that they're free content. :v: Donate if you like, but if you charge for them it's DLC.

Yeah for real. I'm getting extremely sick of Valve's money grabbing moves. Like paid mods is just a whole new low.
What i love is that these people are using other mods in order to promote and sell their own mods.
Boris (ENBSeries creator) should add a rule like "if you want to promote and sell your mod using ENBSeries, you must give me a part of the earnings" or some shit.
Pretty sure Valve and Bethesda are doing this together.
Which is why the creator cut is so low - Beth has had stuff in their TOS for ages that they own all the content you make with the Creation Kit (which is why you couldn't charge for it before) - So they take the lions share, Valve gets something for hosting the Workshop, and the creator is left with a measly 25%
Well, fuck the future then.
And those modders who will be trying to do a quick cashgrab. Its their fault for taking the bait.
Looks like they're already taking it down. Some people can't access the mod page anymore and the comments have disappeared from most pages.
Something that most people seem to overlook is the following: Bad paid mods will not sell. Not even idiots will pay money for obvious cash grab mods. So they will be downvoted and die off. Mods that actually make it are the ones that people should look for, that have a remarkable feature or something similiar. Shit stuff won't sell, no matter how much the workshop gets. The situation is bad, but it's something to keep in mind.
I'm not overlooking it, it's still bullshit regardless. Sure, bad mods won't sell, but good mods will, which are the ones you want to use. which are the ones you won't be able to use unless you spend money on it.
Yeah and then there are mods that promise big and offer nothing. Just like greenlight and early access.
There are already unfinished mods in the list (the fishing one and the dark armor set), that's not a good sign when the poster mods that they selected to represent the whole thing are already showing up unfinished.
Well time to download all the popular mods on the nexus that I may use that I can in the chance they get workshopped.
