Since Mod Organizer installs everything outside of the main folder it means they can't actually track any of your files down. Some people are worried that Bethesda may update the game to basically force-remove any mod that's not workshop based, but using MO that wouldn't work anyway.
The donation popup is a real thing now, mod authors can turn it on if they want. That's all we need. Everyone wins. Paid mods are not "supporting the author", it's making a business. Surprise surprise, people think charging $1 for a sword in a single-player game is a bit cheeky.
Just wait... It can get so much worse Just imagine You're walking about skyrim burning children and chickens like normal then suddenly BLAM IN GAME POP-UP MESSAGE "I see you're using the unpaid version of my mod, please concider subscribing to my mod on the steamworkshop :^)" with only two button options: [open steamoverlay to workshop] [remind me in 10 mins game time]
this is probably late as fuck, but doesn't SkyUI use TweenLite? TweenLite can't be used for commercial purposes unless you buy a commercial license, which is $500/year (assuming its a team of multiple people). Will he even make that much money a year from the mod alone?
What really bugs me about this (besides valve and bethesda being absolute morons) is that there are two totally legitimate sides to this argument, and while I personally am against the skyrim workshop BS I understand that some people aren't and have their own reasons not to be. That being said HOLY SHIT they're patronizing. I know that the anti side is patronizing too but jesus christ, the pro side is the minority, and that is NOT how you win friends.

The Nexus is getting money from this deal too, so I doubt Bethesda would go in the other direction. (or that Valve would let them)
https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/33uplp/mods_and_steam/ Gabe is talking about stuff over here.
Another big difference is that Dota cosmetics get (properly) assessed for quality and style guidelines.
not anymore, they dont.
to be honest, tf2 has the same and we still got this thing somehow [t]http://cloud-4.steamusercontent.com/ugc/468674753120929934/CC98B8A1B519537FDF883104638BB55131C03C9D/637x358.resizedimage[/t] I'm not sure Valve can really be trusted to "assess for quality and style", though I don't play Dota2 so maybe they do a better job there.
What? You think that looks bad? You're the first person I've seen to say that looks bad and it's not even the worst item you can pull from Edit: This actually fits I don't get it

And the stiff-as-a-board-of-wood-ness. And the strange feathers that look nothing like the other birds ingame. And the strange, textured-on mouth.

I don't even care what Gabe has to say, I don't like him anymore and I never will.
I never expected that much jargon and question dodging to come out of gabe.
im trying to generate screenshots of my follower, I installed a poser mod but half of them are anime related or just look weird [t]http://i.imgur.com/iKPuUqk.jpg[/t]
You could always just use Skyrim's in game animations. They're a lot more stuble, and the FNIS idles mod thing has all of them if you're willing to sift through it.
I never expected that much jargon and question dodging to come out of gabe.
It's completely what I expected. Something he said that really worries me is that he said they are "always going to be data driven". It reminds me of a time when people were talking about Overstrike. No one remembers this game anymore, but it had a pretty neat trailer. Then it kinda went away and came back as Fuse and everyone thought it looked like shit because everything that was neat about the first trailer, the visual style, the comedy, the character designs, was gone from the Fuse trailer. Well, turns out the game was focus tested to hell and back. The "data" the developers got from constantly testing the game said that people though Overstrike looked like a kids game and so they changed the whole thing and it didn't work out for them. So if the data shows that people are buying mods despite having a petition signed by almost 100,000 people (not a small number in the scheme of petitions) and other developers are shaking their heads going "This is probably a bad idea.", then they're just going to ignore everything else and run with the data? That doesn't fucking sound like the Valve that, say, had three of their developers approach IceFrog, the DotA guy, and say "Hey, wanna try to make your game better?" without knowing it would actually work out for them or not.
I never expected that much jargon and question dodging to come out of gabe.
Doesn't surprise me at all, hes the CEO of his company, he's getting shit on by the collective internet and he needs to damage control as much as he can while still sticking to their business plan that they've been working on in collaboration with Beth for months. At the end of the day companies are concerned about one thing: Turning a healthy profit, twist it how you want, that's how it is. If Gabe thinks they can see a return on this service, they're going to use it. Gabe claims that the mod profit cuts were dictated by the game dev, but I refuse to believe that Valve had no say in it. It seems crystal clear that this is here to stick around for awhile.
Just wait... Third option, upload a fix to the nexus workshop.
Oh jesus h christ
Hi, Robin. In general we are pretty reluctant to tell any developer that they have to do something or they can't do something. It just goes against our philosophy to be dictatorial. With that caveat, we'd be happy to tell developers that we think they are being dumb, and that will sometimes help them reflect on it a bit. In the case of Nexus, we'd be happy to work with you to figure out how we can do a better job of supporting you. Clearly you are providing a valuable service to the community. Have you been talking to anyone at Valve previously?
[editline]25th April 2015[/editline] This is in response to Nexus creator asking them to promise no mod drm
alright well that does it. what you said converted me. im going to make this character of mine into a follower and put her up for 9,99€ on the steam workshop. because i valued it so. With that caveat, we'd be happy to tell developers that we think they are being dumb, and that will sometimes help them reflect on it a bit.
This means we can, but we don't want to; since it's up to the developer of the game on whether they put the Workshop DRM on or not, but they will let the developer know they think it's a dumb idea.
Which means nothing just like me politely asking a paid mod creator to fix his shit
