I am having a good ole time with the battle rifle. I can see why most folks don't like it (it's not a bullet hose), but I love it for that exact reason. Its range is great and its control is very manageable if you're being patient about it. I just take my time when shooting, and allow the crosshairs to settle again after every shot. It's a consistent stream of damage from a distance equal to, and far exceeding automatic weapons' useful ranges. It's not bursty, though, so you'll get toasted if you use it in a short-ranged environment. I've finally got mine fully upgraded, and it's just a real joy to use. I obviously get trashed by most "in-your-face" encounters while using it, but it's a situational weapon for use in outdoor environments, and if you use it right and where it's meant to be used, it really excels at its job. A foregrip and compensator make it more than up to the task for medium-average outdoor lengths, and the high velocity ammo is great for when I want to sit way back. I'm even starting to get pretty good at hitting moving targets with it. Lots o' fun. Plus, with how many people complain about how "useless" it is, I'm hoping it'll get buffed, which will make it even more fun to use. Unless they pull an SOE and completely change the core concept of the weapon, like they did with the Falcons on the NC MAX, in which case I'll be pretty ticked off.
People seem to have a really weird understanding of how ranged shooting in PS2 works. Nobody dislikes battle rifles because they're not bullet hoses, they dislike semiautomatics because the probability they'll connect is worse than the probability an automatic will past 50m. The lack of player momentum and pseudorandom strafing patterns FPS players use makes the location of your enemy between you firing and your projectile getting downrange uncertain; you're not firing at a enemy, you're firing at a cloud of potential enemy positions that vary slightly in elevation and heavily laterally. Since that cloud is larger than the number of positions an enemy might be in that would get them hit by a single shot, automatics with their own widely distributed cloud of shots prove more reliable and consistent. This is borne out by ranged LMG users having better KPH stats with a worse TTK and accuracy than battle rifle users- they're not doing better that the battle rifles up close (the TTK is worse, they'd be getting mauled), they're doing better farther out.

I like BRs in games that have a nice satisfying amount of damage but can at least somewhat hold their own against AR users close in. The BR just gets flatout outclassed in those situations. I like BR-esque a weapon options that don't pigeonhole me as I switch between mid and close ranges, which I do frequently. Carbines are fun for a while, but they just aren't that interesting.
It's a little bit sad that the most fun I've had on this game practically since it launched is when that hotfix broke all splash damage for a few hours so people stopped pulling tanks and aircraft and went on foot instead. Massive infantry battle with nothing but guns. No grenades, no rocket-podders, no HE tanks on the hill spamming the spawn rooms. I think this game would be about a hundred times more enjoyable if they removed most or all of the splash damage weapons. Replace vehicle AI explosive weapons with heavy machine guns, slug cannons, beam weapons, and crap like that, because playing a Planetside without HE spam has opened my eyes to how much of a drag they are on gameplay! [editline]12th September 2013[/editline] Course, it also did this: Game over.
i would come back to PS2 if this happened. i always played HA not because i like the gun(i hated the NC lmgs) but because i had a rocket that would make all the vehicles go away. being gibs more often than a person got old real fast.
it'd be sick if there was a continent where the only vehicle allowed is a flash (because there's lightning storms or something that'll zap anything bigger than a quadbike)
it'd be sick if there was a continent where the only vehicle allowed is a flash (because there's lightning storms or something that'll zap anything bigger than a quadbike)
Did you forget how bad they handle?
Yeah, the Flash is mega-broken right now. It's a shame, because I've got prolly two or three thousand certs in it! The wraith cloak turned out to make the Flash a bit imbalanced, and skilled users were able to farm infantry like nobody's biz. A couple of minor tweaks to its weapons would have been enough, but they went above and beyond, massively overnerfing the thing. The handling is now impossible, the resource cost was quadrupled, its weapons were dramatically nerfed, and its NV optics stopped highlighting enemy units. They cut off an arm to get rid of a hangnail. I'm sure they'll revisit it again eventually, but right now it's just collecting dust, because it's not good enough to be a combat vehicle, and it's now way too expensive to be a disposable transport vehicle.
They should make the Flash inherently stealthy, so it doesn't pop up on minimaps by default. And then it should be able to drive up a mountain, because right now it's slower and less powerful than it should be in addition to having too little traction for turning sharply. Maybe someday they'll throw a shield diffuser onto it, and people will storm Amp Stations in a biker gang.
I just drive around with an open mic yelling honk honk honk, honk hooooooooonk so people know to get outa the way. I'm very thrifty.
this is exactly what I do :v:
Did you forget how bad they handle?
since i use the harasser more i keep expecting everything to handle as good as it
"Dear Diary, I saw another one of those FUCKING Harassers again today (please don't tell anyone I cursed). What were SOE thinking with that? It does everything the Flash was supposed to do, except a hundred times better! On top of that, they quadrupled the Flash's resource cost and nerfed its combat effectiveness into the ground! Now the Flash's only real use is as a disposable transport vehicle, which would still be okay, if it weren't a hundred resources, and if I hadn't put so many gosh dang certs into making it a light assault vehicle prior to the Harasser's release. Your friend, BDA." They really need to offer a full cert refund to their players, because all of the new content and balance passes they have been shelling out, while cool, have completely changed the game. I don't want to have 2000 certs and 1500 Station Cash invested in my Flash if my Flash's role has been completely changed since I invested them, you dig? I'm not complaining about new content, I think it's sweet as heck, but it's a bit frustrating to have them completely replacing or changing the roles of weapons or vehicles or whatever, and saying "tough luck!" to the people who already put a bunch of time into getting the content before it was changed!

The exact same thing happens with regular weapons and other vehicle options all the time. It's an mmo, change is inevitable and "constant". Maybe in another 10 years SOE will have brought some sort of Flash only capability/weapon (aside from cloak) that will make it viable again. As for your refund idea; Whats going to happen if SOE refunds people constantly, only for the item they are getting a refund for to updated down the line? People will bitch and whine that they spent the certs/sc they were refunded and how life is unfair and SOE is the bad guy again. Seeing as you made an investment in something that is bound to change for better or worse at any given day, "tough luck" is the most generous thing I would say to someone in your position. "You should have known better" seems much more appropriate. I would know because I too invested fairly heavily into the flash only for it to be made almost entirely overshadowed by the Harasser for the time being. All we can do is hope that when SOE finally gets itself back in gear with item updates, they will show the flash some love.
I don't care, I'm very upset. Can't you see that this is a difficult time for me? It's not like the Flash isn't unfixable, but I have a feeling us Flash users are gonna have to wait a heck of a long time to see it gets the changes it needs. Its biggest problem is that it no longer has a clear role. Before, it was a disposable transport vehicle, and, wiith a cert investment and a bit of skill, it could be transformed into a capable light assault vehicle. But then they dramatically nerfed its combat capabilities, which implies that it's meant to be used as a disposable transport vehicle, while simultaneously quadrupling its resource cost, suggesting its meant to be used for combat. At the same time, they released the Harasser, which further muddles the Flash's role by being both a better transport and a better attack vehicle. Which takes the Flash to a stage where it's like, "well, what the heck am I supposed to do with this thing, then?" If the theme in vehicles is Heavy : Light, as in Liberator : ESF, MBT : Lightning -- big punch, slow movement : smaller punch, more agility -- then it should be Harasser : Flash. The only problem right now is that the Harasser packs both a way bigger punch and is substantially more agile. The Flash has weaker firepower by miles, but is also wildly unstable and damn near impossible to control, even with maxed out chassis upgrades. It's very distressing! I'm distressed. If they want to justify the Flash's higher resource cost and follow the theme of Big and Little combat vehicles, then make it the Harasser's little brother, you know? Give a total makeover to its handling and offer the driver a little bit more survivability. The weapon nerfs I feel were probably justified, at least in regards to raw firepower. That grenade launcher was ridiculously strong for the little vehicle. But, the grenade launcher, like every other aspect of the Flash, got a double-whammy nerf, with both firepower and ammo reserves being cut. Make it one or the other, both is just overkill. Iron out those kinks !kapow!, the Flash is now fun and viable again. Make it the ESF to the Harasser's Liberator; the Lightning to the Harasser's MBT. Alternatively, just wipe its combat status and weapon unlocks, revert the resource cost to 25, and refund the players who invested certs into it to give them the option to invest on other things; thereby cementing the Flash's role as little more than a disposable transport vehicle. Until then:

Has anyone noticed that the honeycomb camo has dissapeared? Did SOE have a fart or is there a reason for this? The new phoenix camo is p gud though.
Hopefully recon drones are not an excuse for infiltrators to be even less useless players. Yes, I know some people can play them, but most really sit around and do nothing. [editline]14th September 2013[/editline] Aw man Striker requires a maintained lock to hit air now.
The drones seem like it will only be effective for squad play considering it has no ability to engage anything. With luck if no guns get added they will allow it to fire a canister of smoke as that would be useful in a number of situations. Firing the smoke at campers on a hill forcing them to either move position or engage you either way causing a distraction for squad mates trying to get to an objective. Or maybe if you are flying over a fight going on and you see somebody in need of help you could lay down smoke for them or whatever.

Tramell said they're going to be back some time next week I believe.
Aw. I thought they took them down because nobody was buying them.
Oh my god, retardo flame patterns you say? I half want to download PS2 again to see some of the stupid submissions people have made. That, and I want to see these new armors so I know what I will have to compete with. My idea: To take the skull mask, and duplicate it onto the back of the mask, then to create an armor that has an indistinguishable front and back. That way, enemies will never know which way you are facing! Unless they see your gun....and the way your knees and arms are bending. Welp, back to the drawing board.
Oh my god, retardo flame patterns you say?
A++ quality. To be fair though, that and the honeycomb are pretty much the only really bad submissions. The rest are fairly decent, especially the new helmets.

Although I am genuinely interested in the helmet submissions tbh.

I honestly think a lot of player studio camo patterns could be improved by making versions that use actual camo colours. The only player studio camo that I've liked so far was that Delta Camo or whatever it's called, which is the only one so far that hasn't been faction coloured.

Rock Lichen is faction coloured though, but since you play TR (at least I think I remember that you do?) it's looking like a white tundra style camo for you guys. Rock Lichen is blue and purple for NC and VS respectively though.

Why the hell would it be gray for TR (secondary color) but blue for NC (primary) and purple for VS (primary)? Gotta love that consistency.
