You just give land to Orthodox men of the cloth and have a huge retinue and have all the mercenaries hired out forever... It costs a fortune but with a few merchant republics you can easily afford it. Gets a bit stale. At least I made the Mediterranean a Roman lake as it was intended to be.

Are you sure your vassals murdered him? If he has a younger brother they could be the culprit. Or the brother's wife or extended family if they're married. Same goes for sisters or cousins, really anyone that's in line to inherit should your heir die. Failing that just look through your vassals looking for any that have the Dishonorable, Ambitious or Ruthless/Tyrant trait. And none of the vassals like him so I think they all pitched in.

The AI isn't the best at managing vassal relations and there's also the chance he was abusing them in some way. Vassals are sensitive creatures that feel offended and threatened by everything. How is Hearts of Iron 3 compared to CK2? Easier or harder to understand?

I'd say equal complexity, with the exception of combat/armies which takes a while to get used to.
