Haven't seen this pic before, is it possible to check the penetrations as a player or is this a new screeny from a developer?
It's coming from a developer and it's not that new.
I don't know about that. There's a lot more going on in War Thunder's damage model than is readily apparent and I've played enough that when you repeat the same exact, shots over again you get very similar results. Where you penetrate a tank isn't the only thing that matters, it's penetrating the same exact tank in the same exact location in the same exact condition with the same exact shell entering from the same exact angle.
Plus, I am convinced that components have invisible HP bars (programming wise they just have to) and the damage applied to them depends on the energy your shell has. This is why smaller rounds can take 2-3 rounds to destroy a tank with a small ammo rack.
Nope. I have had moments where I "blackened" the ammo rack of the enemy and they didn't seem to mind at all, as well as hits where the ammo rack got pea green and the thing blew up, and I had that happen over and over against the same tanks (PzIVs, T-34s, Panthers as against these I always go for Ammo Rack).
For example, if you shoot a PzIVC in the ammo rack, which is a large target and filled with relatively huge HEAT shells, it will explode in one shot every time from the 45mm cannon all the early Russian tanks have. On the other hand, shooting a PzIIs ammo rack isn't as fruitful because it's smaller and the rounds are also significantly smaller. It doesn't have the same explosive force as a PzIV's, meaning to kill a PzII you need to kill the crew rather than take the ammo rack shortcut.
I honestly think it's literally impossible to ammorack 20mm ammo tanks. I haven't ever seen it happen.
Whether or not you ammo rack somebody has a lot to do with the size of your round and I'm also pretty sure that how much ammo they have left affects whether or not that specific rack will explode. Fires I will agree seem to be the most RNG looking thing because I haven't noticed a strong pattern yet. On low tiers it's hard to tell what caused the fire.
However, it's worth mentioning that the higher you go up in the game and the more powerful the guns get, the less "RNG" the game starts to feel. Once you reach era 3 almost all guns are powerful enough* that when they penetrate they can destroy whatever modules they hit with one shot. Your first shot and shot placement matters a lot more the higher in tier where it's the difference between a one shot kill and simply disabling the tank.
Honestly I feel like whenever I have any 75mm APHE that makes it to about center of fuselage is oneshot about half the time and that's it, so I guess you can call it "not RNG" but that's only because the chance seems to be pushed against the wall, testicles first.
* T-34/57 is one of the exceptions and it's why I don't like it. It has great penetration but the round is so small that it's difficult to get that ever important one shot kill.
Funny, I like that gun because it feels like actual effort to shoot it.

The exploding green ammo rack is something I noticed yesterday for the first time. I don't know if something changed with the damage panel or I never noticed because I don't recall seeing that before.
When a 75mm APHE round makes it to the center of a tank hull it's literally surrounded by ammo. It's going to explode something.
Here's something from the damage model blog posts that I didn't notice before:
Ammo rack is destroyed - it can be destroyed by several hits or one hit with a very high damage - usually it means that the shell sill has high penetration capacity after penetrating the armor. In this case there is a high chance of ammo rack explosion - 90% and more.
I don't know if he's directly implying there's a dice roll, but it's definitely seems likely. Either way, 90% is a whole lot less RNG than World of Tank's 27% to hit + needing to completely deplete the HP.

Same here. Blacked a Pz.II's rack yesterday and he kept on trucking. Had to kill the crew.
They said they are working on a kursk style city map a while ago.
A map like that sounds like it'll be amazing when combined ops comes back. I always love flying low on the Pearl Harbor map and weaving in and around the fuel tanks and hangars, so the idea of chasing IL-2s through city streets while trying to avoid planes, tanks, and buildings is pretty appealing to me.
I just want a SB map the size of Kursk, but with something more going on than just large rolling hills. A map with towns and villages dotting the terrain, but still with open ground for long range tank combat would be great. The lack of maps is one of WTGF's biggest problems right now.
What happened to stuff about planes?
Tanks are new of course everyone is going to talk about them.
Plane related though, Simulator has rolled around to GER/UK/USA, which is a fun matchup.
Wiseman had to go...

Norway needs him
Tier 4 arcade is a fuckin joke because the teams are made of mostly b17s, yer2s and do217s. So, the rounds never take more than 4-5 mins.
why cant you choose what map some are so fucking bad
edit
and what skills should I lvl up first on tank crews?
I don't know what just happened. I had a single T-28 instakill me 4 times in a row, each time killing my entire crew and my engine in a single shot, while my rounds just went straight through him, not even connecting.

Probably vitality and repair.

T-28 is a vapid vortex of a vodka abyss. Unless you got some big HE shells, it takes a while to hammer them out to dead since they're so fucking ginormous.
And the shells it fires are purely Shrapnel or APHE, 76mm - so they're pretty nasty for their tier. If one of those shrapnel shells pens (with it's wopping 38mm pen or so), it basically kills every living creature in a explosive radius.

The shrapnel rounds they get are killer. So far the best way I've seen take them down reliably is one shot through the center hull one through the turret and one in the left (Their perspective) tumor. Kills all the crew assuming you pen or don't get fucked over by varying degrees of RNG.
Since we're posting ridiculous paint jobs

They REALLY need to fix the retarded thing where jumping out of the tank denies everyone the kill.
I had it done three times to me last match, twice by a single guy. It gets fucking infuriating.

the entirety of arcade is a complete joke. play RB.
the entirety of arcade is a complete joke. play RB.
I don't like RB because:
- You spend 90% of the match doing nothing
- You only get to use 1 plane
Tip for anyone in the lower tank tiers and is ready to start killing actual russians out of spite : shoot the T-50 in the front turret ring, and the T-34 in the side.
I don't know if it's bounce mechanics or a massive weakspot, but I've been one shotting a lot of T-50 from the front in my 3F. Then again it might just be the panzergraneten fuerzig with it's 100mm of glorious hitlerite penetration.
- You spend 90% of the match doing nothing
No you don't. Play more and learn to play defensively.
You spend 90% of the match doing nothing if you choose too. It's not like theres only one viable tactic for RB.

You only need one plane.
No you don't. Play more and learn to play defensively.
90% of the match I can alt-tab and do other shit, and still come out as top player.
Compare that to the 40-50% of the match in Arcade. Jeeze, scrub.
On a serious note, I'd play Realistic Battles more if there was incentive to do anything other than straight up deathmatch, or the occasional ground target snipe-out win. I'll switch over religiously when they introduce earned respawns, if they do. I only like Arcade right now because I find it better for grinding and I can pump out victories rather easily, less it's domination.
Ok, is anyone else experiencing this phenomenon in ground forces where tanks that are just barely behind concealment disappear visually? In certain situations where a hill or other map barrier separates me and an enemy, the enemy will disappear when he is almost entirely covered, despite not being entirely in cover. I can still shoot, hit, and kill the enemy by aiming at where he should be, and I suspect that it's just the game engine culling the entity for render performance reasons, but it's doing it too early. I should be able to see the top of the turret or the front drive wheel but the tank just disappears.
Sometimes they disappear when they should clearly be visible

If you have artillery you can switch to that view and it'll render the model again
If you have artillery you can switch to that view and it'll render the model again
You can also use artillery view to pretend you have a 20 meter periscope (mainly if you zoom in) but
So according to my stats, I've killed 121 tanks in my sherman while dying only 15 times.
Sherman OP.
Almost out of the first tier on ru side. looking forward to kv1 / su 122.
Friend of mine took me into a tier 2 match with his german td.. bastard i say.
Came across a T-34 in my ZiS-30.. fired first shot into his ass (engine fire), when i reload his engine fire is out, so i fire into engine again (re lit the engine).. he still hasn't turned his turret at me yet... finally reload, his engine was extinguished again.. so 3rd times the charm.. set him aflame once more.. (guy's still kicking at this point after all these engine fires etc... he finally turns his turret to me and fires.. almost instant ammo rack except i'm still in the game for one more shell.. last shell finally kills him. 4 shells to the rear? at under 100m? bizarre.

You should have fired at the rear turret for an instant oneshot.. the engine block stops the shell from penetrating into the squishy crew area
