Depends how much paper they want to pull. They could at least be semi-competitive, if about as armored as rice paper, up to the T-34/M4 Sherman/Panzer IV H. After that, it's a lot of prototypes, one-offs, and things with almost zero information since some of the heavy equipment was kept on the main island for a homeland invasion and the material shortages kept them from getting any real production running. Once you go past the Type 3 Chi-Nu, comparable to the M4 Sherman with bad armor, almost everything is a prototype or paper.
One of their little Type 98 SPAAG prototypes is so adorable though:

The Chi-nu's gun is slightly more powerful than the Sherman's, so it could actually work in game.
If you are talking about the M3 cannon, that was one of the worst guns that got largely fielded on "core" armor, tho.
I killed about 4 planes out of a 10v10.
I look at the scoreboard, 8 of my team is dead, and 6 of theirs are.
I cannot get a decent stable balanced round for the life of me, in any plane, damnit.
man, I really didn't like the cannon ki-61 when I first got it, but now that I've got it almost aced I honestly wish japan had imported more MG-151's for their planes
Watching idiots line themselves up and get torn apart in one or two hits is just too satisfying to belong only on a plane with a flight model from 1941
also being able to kill bombers without using rockets is really nice

For probably fifth time this thread: Yes 50 cals are gonna get nerfed into the ground because the damage models are bugged and they're like 4x as effective as they should be.

I remember flying the G-6 with a 30mm cannon on it, fully upgraded, with night rounds(afaik the best round?). Diving on a b-17, I must have shot 15 rounds into the body of the plane with each one saying hit or critical hit. I keep on flying, and all I see is red flying right past me. Then dink, and I was dead. He continued on and landed. I was baffled.

Sadly the ki-61 Hei is matched with P-51's, P-47's, Spitfires, Yak-9's and BF109's.
Thankfully it proceeds to kick their arses.
Even the first Ki-61 meets the P-47 lol
Man the Panther sucks shit.
It's slow as dicks, it takes 3 weeks to elevate the gun 10 feet, ANY shot that hits the front of your tank takes out the gun, the turret, or both. If your commander's hatch gets hit you get an engine fire.
It's only saving grace is the gun, but it's only on par with anything else you go up against. They see a panther, they load HE, and then touch your tank with it and out goes your gun and or turret, without fail. Those angles don't mean shit, either

I feel like the gunner's .50s do more damage in a single shot than bullets from forward firing .50s; heck, even .30 caliber defensive armaments really mess you up in only a few hits. .30s are popguns though if you happen to have them as offensive armament.

You use to be able to fly the a6m2 with one of the wings completely blown off back when it had the hilarious FM.
I just played my first few rounds, it was pretty fun. It's not that rage inducing like most other PVP games.
