For the US, ground targets tends to be the best, but tracers are also good if you're running M3's.
Don't know about Russian 20mm's. I haven't flown Russian aircraft since before the days of the Lumberyaks and the indestructible Lagg.

Best Lala performance vs battle rank wise, dirt cheap, a lot of fun. I think it's the best Rank 3 soviet fighter personally (I-185 is good too but it turns like a brick so not everyone will like it, P-39 with gunpods removed is also good but very rarely on sale). I have a talisman on mine from aeons ago (like over a year) and it's been great since then. Now that I think about it B-25 might be a better pure grinding machine but god level bombers are so boring and I assumed that guy wanted a fighter.
For rank 4 if you don't have the P-63 A-10 I used to say the Tu-2S with a talisman but since the bomb nerfs I'm thinking the La-9 might be a strong contender. That said, I haven't [I]actually[/I] flown my M-71 yet, that could be good too.
Picked up IL2 BOS, after bounching the Russian airfield I got my first A2A kill :)
Anyone else play it? Sim mode in WT wasn't enough for me.

I am turned off by apparent gross imbalance in favor of Germany coupled with apparent pay-2-win of the higher (grossly expensive) rank of planes like the Fockewulf.
I might look into it once it's not so hugely overpriced (by which I mean I gonna pick up some huge pack once it's $5 in a few years)

9/10 German pilots fly the 109's.. occasionally you'll see an oddball flying the 190.

The LaGG the soviets get is trash variant (that apparently wasn't even present at Stalingrad) and the F-4 is just better than what the soviets have.
Still, made by the guys who made ROF + a very small team.
I personally didn't mind paying a full game's price if I can support development or future projects.
Ech.. they should make IL2: 1946 with this engine, it looks stunning to say the least.

B-25 is best grinding machine. Fuck level bombing, you can get on the deck and absolutely decimate soft targets and tanks, plus pretty much anyone who hangs around near you gets perforated by your gunners.
The Based-25 is the reason I have more unlocked planes in USSR tree than any other.

I can't tell you how many B-25 I've killed in my JakJak-9Thousand. They just seem to.. combust and/or cease to exist in this dimension whenever I look at them funny-like.

I have no idea why they put in an (I guess even more) outdated LaGG rather than a -35 with leading edge slats. The current one doesn't even have an agility advantage on the F-4 in BoS, and the -35 was present at Stalingrad in good numbers anyway so it's not like it'd be historically inaccurate. Feels like too much of a Wehraboo masturbationary aid.

You just fly in a straight line and watch as everything around you gets set on fire

I had an experience like that on the US vs UK map in RB, when I was in my Spit Mk.XVI I dove on a B-17, hit about 650 KMH when I started firing at 1 KM out, and all I got was my engine catching fire just before my pilot got knocked out with 1 engine damaged on the B-17.
It's times like that when I wonder why the hell I still play this game.

It was also pretty common to send hundreds of them to bomb cities and factories, only to have a handful return.

Based on German testing it took an average of ~25 MG151/20 shells to take down a B-17, or just four MK108 shells.
B-17s we have in the game never ever too less than hundreds of 20mm shells and dozens of 30mm shells.
Highly armored "meant to take hits" bombers were a blind take proven to not to be feasible approach. That's why since soon after the war, practically no strategic bombers carried defensive weapons - there's no point. Once fighter gets in range, you are fucked. The bombers are only meant to be deployed with enough support to ensure no threat will get within range.
Just as a heads up, a single 30mm Mineshot shell can carry over 70g of explosive filler. The american hand grenade of the time had 50g of TNT. No your Burger-17 can't tank that.
