People should just look over the tanks and look at where ammo locations are. It's not like you need to memorize every tank, many of them share or have similar ammo locations since they're all variants of the same tanks. The list seems long, but it's actually pretty simple. If you look at the models in game it will become pretty clear that it's pretty simple. Russians: - T34's like to surround themselves with fuel and use ammo for seats. (Literally, the entire floor under the turret ring is an ammo rack). - T44/54 no longer sits on ammo, but now has a big block in the front right (think of it as if you were sitting in a car) of the tank between the first and second wheels (are they still called wheels?) -KV's are similar to T34's but also have ammo in the turret and in the same front-right spot as T44/54. -IS series has ammo consistently in the turret. Different variants have different amounts of ammo scattered around on the floor. Most consistent spots are the floor directly under the center of the turret and under the front of the turret ring on both sides. - SU/ISU's, just aim for the back of the "turret" type structure above the tracks, level with the rest of the rear of the tank, and you'll probably hit ammo. If from the front, the left/right edges of the "turret" type area above the tracks. Germans: - Pz III's turret crew like to keep their feet warm with ammo. - Pz IV's like putting ammo on top of their tracks at the front/back of the turret ring depending on if it's a short or long barrel. They also like putting ammo behind the machinegunner or driver; machinegunner if a C-F model, Driver if it's a G/H model. J is the only "unique", their track ammo is now in the middle of the turret ring above the tracks, and also has ammo between the driver/MG. - Pz V's have ammo in all previously mentioned Pz IV spots (excluding J), with the addition of more vertical ammo near the rear of the turret ring on the sides of the tank. The ammo behind the driver/mg is a bit thinner and more toward the sides than the center. - Tiger VI's, Just shoot above the tracks and you'll probably hit ammo. This thing is basically lined with ammo. - Tiger II's, Above the tracks under the turret, and more in the rear of the turret. If you have enough penetration, (from the front) you can probably just shoot to the left/right of the barrel and probably hit ammo that's stored in the back of the turret. (German TD's like to move their shit all over the place) - Stugs have ammo at the back of the "turret" on the floor, and in that "front right" spot that T44/54's have, but above the second wheel. - Jagd/Panzers have returned to their "ammo above the tracks" roots, and also have a set towards the center sides. - Just shoot a Jagdpanther in the side of the "turret" and watch the fireworks. From the front, aim for the edges. - Ferdinand is weird so screw describing it decently. In both the center and rear side of the "turret". - Jagdtiger returns to it's origins, under the turret above the tracks, and on the floor in the center of the tank. The list may seem long but that's because I restate things sometimes. In the end they share quite a few ammo locations. It's probably easier to just look at the models than rely on these vague-ish descriptions, but these are more to point out that you don't need to remember each tank independently.
Proper term is casemate.
Oops I forgot Americans: - M4A1/M4A2 and their variants, Above the track under the turret. From almost any direction you'll hit ammo. - M4A3 and variants, inner rear of the turret ring, left/right edges at the front near the driver/mg above the tracks. (There is also some in the right center above tracks, and right center below tracks, but this doesn't apply to the M4A3E2's.) - M26/M46 both have ammo at the front left of the turret and bottom below the turret. - M47 gets rid of the turret ammo, but moves it inside of the turret ring on the left side. - T32 has ammo in the back left of the turret and the center of the floor of the tank below the turret ring. - M103 has some right below the machine gun sticking out of the top on the edges, and more right inside the turret ring on the left.
If you don't know where to shoot on a tank specifically, here's a general purpose "I know literally nothing about tanks" guide. Modules: Ammo - always near the gun, usually beside it. Sometimes underneath on the floor for Russian crews. Often in the back of the turret for American tanks and SPAAGs. Germans love to line the upper-sides of their hulls with this stuff. This is your best target. Destruction of it = destruction of tank. Cannon Breach - internal "end" of the cannon. Wonderful target. Breaking this, or the cannon, puts the enemy tank almost entirely out of commission and you can do lewd things to it. Even putting in the yellow or red gives them a risk of blowing up when shooting. This is your secondary module target, along with the cannon. Transmission - typically hugging the lowest point, and in center of front with frontal transmissions. I'm not sure about War Thunder's fire chance with it, but it will stop a tank dead unless it wants to roll down a hill. Fuel - sides, low and usually towards the engine. This is not a great target all things considered, but a good option if you have a rapid fire gun and need to get some more damage in. Considering the stability of the fuel used and how armored the internal tanks were for Ruskies, this is actually more of internal extra armor for Russians than it is "tickle me for fires." Engine/Turret Ring/Cannon - if you need help with this you might need basic mechanical help. Crew: Gunner - typically, if you're facing a tank head on, to the right of the gun. This man is your enemy. Shoot this man. This motherfucker right here. The only reason not to focus fire on him first is if you have a slow loading (12+ seconds) gun firing ammo that isn't likely to cause many secondary effects. Killing him grants you, I believe, a solid 8-12 second grace period from behind shot, loaded gun or not. Loader - typically opposite side from gunner, still a great follow up target if you have a fast gun. It'll buy you another handful of seconds and cripples the tank's rate of fire. Driver - where the slit is, seriously. This is probably the easiest one. Commander - no purpose, easiest to spot, don't bother Radioman - pffffffffffffffffff If you have moderately good penetration, the best "general" spots to hit tanks are right through the driver's slit angled towards the turret if possible, from the front. Another safe bet is to try to nail the gunner if you're expecting to get slapped back. Or from the the sides the very bottom of the turret/very top of the hull right in center - or even a smidge towards the gun. If from behind, back of turret every time. Trying to go for the engine is just going to cause less useful damage and open you up to being shot.
Wonder when they'll make killing the commander / his vision slits and radioman / his radio matter.
Wonder when they'll make killing the commander / his vision slits and radioman / his radio matter.
Outside a proper not Lite-Brite™ RB spotting system, he's not ever going to be unless they make the penalties for losing him really severe - like input lag to simulate bad crew coordination or remarkably reduced crew stats. Even then, he's still a low priority target in video games, at least. Man who shoots you with cannon > man who loads cannon > man who maneuvers cannon bearing vehicle > commander > we don't talk about the radioman
Knowing where every crew member and module on a tank is doesn't help much when a direct hit with a 75 only makes it light green. I've literally head-shotted enemy gunners with pzgr 39s and had them live.
The PZ4 Ass C is one of the biggest shit tanks of all. Fucking impossible to do any of the fucking kills for its Gayjin 40 mission. That fucking stump of a gun is shit.
So I finally did all listed missions for the M8A1. Completed it and still didn't get the tank.. Checked the forums and found out there are 19 missions for each vehicle.. I don't want to live anymore.
The PZ4 Ass C is one of the biggest shit tanks of all. Fucking impossible to do any of the fucking kills for its Gayjin 40 mission. Whatever you can't penetrate with the stock APCBC is easily handled with HEAT, almost everything blows up in one shot.
The PZ4 Ass C is one of the biggest shit tanks of all. Fucking impossible to do any of the fucking kills for its Gayjin 40 mission. That fucking stump of a gun is shit.
It gets HEAT rounds that pierce 80mm of armor which isn't bad for a 1.3BR (Not that HEAT rounds are particularly good to begin with but it's better than the ~50mm or whatever that the stubby gun gets with AP)

Its actually a pretty good brawler because you can knock out an entire crew in pretty short order because your gun fires so fast. HEAT is also good at igniting fuel.

[editline]1st January 2015[/editline]
Try to use the Soviet 57mm. Caved in and bought the mega pack on steam yesterday, so that's cool. Finished american tanks, or at least the ones they let you play because they haven't finished balancing ))) the rest Target undamaged has become my favorite thing to see
*shoot a T-34-57 in the turret with a 75mm* PENETRATION *literally 4 shrapnel pieces after explosion, doing fuck all* Promptly get penned by the 57 having half my crew killed or outright ammoracked or gun and turret destroyed. My experience with the german tanks post patch in a nutshell. The TD version of KwK40 seems fine, so stick to Hetzer/StuG/JPz IV if you want to actually do something.
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/56709/ Just a little heads up, there's a pretty darn good deal on the War Thunder Mega Pack on steam atm. 18.000 lions, 4 airplanes, 2 tanks, and nearly 4 months of premium for 46 local currencies! The same price as 10.000 lions in the Gaijin store. Sadly I already own an Ace Advanced Pack, and for some imbecellic reason I can't get just the lions and premium, so it's not much good for me.
Can I add these to my account without installing war thunder via steam? It's a sweet deal
It actually made me go back to playing 3.7 BR tanks, because that's at least fun. I had a round with the premium KV-1 where we were shooting at eachother with 4 shermans, and we couldn't do anything to eachother, because they couldn't penetrate me and I couldn't do anything to them when penetrating. Seriously, fuck this. [editline]1st January 2015[/editline] MEEERGE
You can copy your WT folder into the steam one or something and only have to download a small bit but other then that nope.
Turns out you can get the codes from steam instead of having it activate it when launching, so I bought it. The concept of having your game on steam and then using a launcher is retarded.
Oh, so you just grab the code they give you and activate it on the Gaijin site thing?
Yeah. And holy shit, that pack got me 18k gold? Wtf do I do with all this gold.
Yeah. And holy shit, that pack got me 18k gold? Wtf do I do with all this gold.
Whatever the fuck you want. You're unstoppable at this point. With all that cash, who's going to argue? Nobody, that's who!

I did try angling the best I could, but the armor on that tank is hideous. It was literally the APCBC ammo that ranked in the 30+ kills I needed to complete the mission. I loaded a couple for whatever, and the one shots flooded in.
I'd like to spend some of it on un-researching the Mig15bis and go towards the sabre instead.
Jesus christ, it's impossible to queue Historical in a 5.0 tank without getting enemy team literally 2/3 full of 5.7 Tigers. They need to do something about this.
In other news though, queuing for Historical in the first Panther at 5.7 gives you really great matchmaking nearly every time, mostly Tigers at 5.0 on your team.

The rare, VERY rare time I've queued historical I actually faced against -some- tigers, and PzIII's or whatever they are, medium tanks against my t-34-57(NON MOD 43)
