Heres the story that resulted in the 105 Sherman being pretty not-good right now:
1. 105 was broken as fuck when first introduced. Oneshotted everything.
2. BR was jacked up to compensate for super stronk freedom cannon
3. 105 was nerfed hard
4. BR has not yet come back down to the original level
long story short its kinda meh at the moument and you'll probably just want to use the other Shermans until you get more vehicles in the 4.7 BR range.
Alrite, guess I'll drop both the 4.7BR tanks then and switch back to the 3.7 ones and just grind out the Sherman 76.
Got shot in the ass by a friendly M3 Lee's small gun at the start of the match and it did absolutely jack shit. The shell just somehow disappeared into my engine block, no engine damage, nothing, see the hole:

Is it really such a bad gun? The 37mm I think it is
I ended up teamkilling him by accident later on by pure coincidence (two lees next to eachother, an enemy and the friendly one, my shell veered off course and hit the friendly's ammorack) and once I realized who it was it made me chuckle.

RIP the most fun tank I've played, we hardly knew ye.

105 Sherman is kinda shit now. I was betrayed by one good match before it hit monotony.
I suggest you fling HE first to break their gun, then use HEAT to go for crew/ammo.
Alternatively, on thinner tanks, hit the absolute base of the turret and you might spall into the fighting quarters and wreck shit. On German tanks, you'll often pop them.

The Lee's smaller gun is indeed a 37mm, and it carries no explosives or after-effects, and due to the size, basically does nothing if it doesn't hit crew. Likely it hit near the engine block and simply passed all the way through. Or lost energy inside without actually damaging anything, somehow.
The American 37mm M3 cannon is by far the worst out of all low tier/reserve tanks

Hell, the T-50 uses the same cannon as the T-26 and is still competent at 2.7BR

Decent pen, bonus APCR rounds, and an HE filler all help it greatly.

I finally sent in a suggestion to replace the current Parts/FPE module system with a new one. I hope it actually goes somewhere. An idea a few friends brought up was that any tank can repair, but without parts, you only get a 50% repair speed. And that all tanks start with one extinguisher, the modules simply gives you another.
Here we go, I got what I came for

With exception of the very early tanks, this hardly felt like a grind at all. American tanks have been very fun at least while I played through them, but I had the luck of doing most of the M4(105) grind while it was still OP and I just skipped playing the M6 entirely (not through glod, through playing the M4s). The first jumbo was a real test of nerve but it was still fun and efficient at grinding.

I've used APCR to kill a KV-1 in my T-50 before, it took like 20 rounds at point blank into the side
