This sure is a thing.
First time on this thread, already saw lots of well-known names watching this thread.
So, i love playing with the Quake Stuff Ultra and Doom64WMI wads
Does anyone knows any Quake-like or Doom64-like wads?
I have been running out of those to play.
Around 2013, I started playing DOOM 1 and 2 and absolutely loved it. I played it over the course of 2013 and 2014 (mainly because I'd play it before I went off to school) and fell in love with one very specific track:

I made this and forgot to mix it midway through 2014. It's still mostly unmixed. I'm sure you guys can guess what it is.
Speaking of music, did you know there was going to be a Game Boy (Possiblly Color) version of Wolfenstein 3D?
All that exists of it, at least that's seen the light of day, were two tracks for the game made by Jake Kaufman
The second track sounds reminds me of Megaman music
I hope Quake 2 is better than Quake 1 just as DOOM 2 was better than DOOM 1.
Oh god that tumblr is great

I honestly don't consider them to be similar enough to be sequels. They just share a title to me.
Makes sense considering Carmack originally didn't even want to call it quake
personally I far prefer Quake 2 to Quake 1
Quake 1 is great but quake 2 is just amazeballs
It has great levels, a great story, AWESOME music, and it's just way more fun than Quake 1, IMO.

It all comes down to personal taste. I can appreciate the relative qualities of style for Quake 1 more than the generic space marine-style Quake 2 (which feels more like it wants to be a 3D Doom successor but all techbase), but Quake 1's somewhat-confusing maps and gameplay difficulty turn my head over while I can breeze through Quake 2 without much issue and enjoy it more overall.

I've never had problems with Quake 1's maps, really. Quake 2 always got me turned around and I kept dying all the time. In Quake 1, I do just fine even on Nightmare. :v:

I always liked Doom 1's level design more than 2's, but that's really just personal taste. Although Doom 2 was much better for mapping, with all the extra resources.

They're not sequels. Id used the name Quake 2 because the name they wanted to use was taken.

Weird, I thought it was that they couldn't decide what theme they wanted to go with in 1, then it got refined into what we have in Quake 2.
I still enjoy Quake 2, but it ends actually having some really abstract levels/level design. Another problem is all the bosses are really trivial with quad damage storing. The weapon selection is quite nice, though, I enjoy the Chaingun and Railgun a hell of a lot.

Almost the same thing here with the abstraction, but that's stemming from the fact that the Doom 2 levels are a bit uglier and poorly themed in places. It's like every level tries to emulate some element of E2 of Doom 1 but doesn't do the theming quite as well.
Q2 to me is like, i want to love it but the base maps in Q1 were my least favorite maps, and then stretch that over a whole campaign, and wash out the colors even more.
The arsenal and OST was pretty great though.
However, if you wanna talk about Q2 engine games, SiN is an outstanding game with amazing level design and interactivity that everybody should play.
My favourite thing to do in Quake 2 was turn off gravity and watch everyone go flying around when killed.
Quake 1's weapons are kinda lame imo

lightning gun
it even worked more realistically then one wouldve expected
but the monster design was something ludicrous and cool
Q1s weapons may look lame in hindsight, but they were basically building on the very good foundation Doom brought and got rid of the useless pistol.
I wish all games had a rocket launcher as visually simple as Quake.

In the process, the initial shotgun became only marginally more useful than the Doom Pistol, though. Q1 definitely wouldn't work with Doom's weaponset because of how quick everything needs to be, but the Shotgun, Super Shotgun and Nailgun feel pretty underwhelming. The Rocket Launcher and Thunderbolt steal the show, with some sidework from the Grenade Launcher and Super Nailgun.
quad damage will never drop from the top my list on best powerups in anything ever
a new sword needs new POWER SWORD sprites.
Oh fuck here they are

I prefer Quake 2, but maybe because it was the first Quake i have played.
However, Quake 1's gameplay is faster and seems more enjoyable, especially if you get an engine with expanded limits + a custom map. I would reccomend Altar of Ruins if you want to change the way you see Q1's gameplay. (Even if i basically ran trough the map avoiding 95% of enemies and just fighting the boss basically).
the biggest problem with Quake 1's weaponry is that the super nailgun and nailgun are hilariously redundant. The super nailgun is basically just a straight upgrade, it should replace the nailgun when you pick it up and in the Super Nailgun's place would be a new weapon fitting a new niche.
They're functionally identical, even the fire rate's the same, just the super nailgun does more damage and the regular nailgun offsets each shot by such a small degree it doesn't even matter.
there's one mod a lot of maps for Quake 1 use that adds a bunch of new enemies and rebalances the existing weapons so that the super nailgun is much more functionally different than the nailgun, it turns it into basically a minigun. I really like that, because it helps a lot with the redundancy.
The most important difference though is that the super nailgun uses 2 nails a shot, whereas the nailgun uses 1. The nailgun is good for longer range plinking of weak enemies when you want to save ammo, and unload on bigger things like shamblers with the super nailgun.
Any recommendations on Q1 mods?

I'm wondering this myself. And how do you guys run mods with it? I have a Darkplaces install set up at the moment.
