You mean you guys didn't just watch the happy days bdoom trailer and say that looks cool and move on? You actually played it?
Actually that is one thing I gotta admit: Brutal Doom usually has some damn fine trailers.
Yeah I honestly don't know if brutal doom is any good
I based my statement about and ideal of what "like brutal doom" is entirely on this
You flatter me, but I didn't make those sprites, although I did frankensprite and edit the plasma rifle, those sweet ass sprites you see there are courtesy of Sgt Shivers, he's great and I recommend you all look for his goofy ass gifs.
Thank you though, with all of my projects I wanna make sure the weapons feel good to use.
Also regarding fatalities, they're fine as long as they're quick. If we look at Brutal's fatalities, they're incredibly drawn out long enough for people to rub themselves over it, whereas I've heard Doom 4's fatalities are all very snappy, like you reach out, split an imp's head open with your hands, they fall over, and you move on all within a second.
As long as the animations don't break the flow of the game, they're fine to me
ah that's why that pistol seemed familiar! and yeah Sgt Shivers is super talented
I guess I just shouldn't be trying to do everything by myself :v:, it's just that there's not a lot of blocky 80s sci-fi gun sprites out there so I gotta do extreme frankenspriting (shit that reminds me, haven't worked on my mod in a while)
I'll be a contrarian and say Brutal Doom is not total absolute garbage. Weeeeeeell okay, the base mod kinda is, but I like Sperglord Edition. I think it's a fairer and more palatable version of Brutal Doom. But that's just me, I know some who disagree far enough to say it's all shit, and that's a valid opinion to hold.
but this topic is usually an annoying one, so I think it's best to leave it around this and a few extra posts then move on, just my two cents
I'm just a massive gorehound that grew up on horror movies from the 70s and 80s. That's the biggest reason why I played Brutal Doom. But when I heard about all that shit Mark pulled on the zDoom forums, like with the suicide bag (our very own doommarine23 talked the depressed kid down, he's a great dude), I just moved on to NashGore.
Considering TNO had a system where you could pick up heavy weaponry from large enemies for a short amount of time and people seemed to like that my guess is that they'll do the same thing here where you can literally just rip off a shoulder cannon from a revenant and fire with it a bunch of times.
'The Old Blood' went further and added a perk where you can keep the machine gun in your inventory so you don't need to drop it.
I'm just gonna pop in here with my 2 cents because hey my name is DoomMarine right? I was also involved in Sgt Mark's Ground Zero of retardation so I get a free pass.
Brutal Doom is entirely fine and valid as any other mod, it appeals to a certain niche and taste of gameplay. As a general gameplay mod or "game" I feel it suffers from a lack of balance because it just feels kind of weird and floaty to me, like every weapon is badass, the enemies are "badass" but not nearly as badass as me, and it just feels like a gory power fantasy, but that is because it is. I also just feel it suffers from being too gory, or rather too open about it. Every stupid action you do releases a fountain of blood and it just gets really generic, really boring, really quick.
But really, Brutal Doom is meant for people who want to "rip and tear" and feel like some kind of super badass while blasting metal, and I don't really think doom is that, but there are people who do. To me? Doom might be fast paced, but its not really this strange speed-crack thing everyone seems to think it is, the original game didn't even have mouse support to my knowledge in 1993, it was a game designed for its time, which meant keyboard control. I don't feel most people played this game like it was on crack, there was no Zdoom style sprint, jump, crouch. I can't in good faith say the same shit everyone doles out "This is what Doom is meant to be!!1".
So I can't really say Brutal Doom is the "best" mod or even feels anything like how I'd expect a modernized Doom to be, or anything of that sort. As the stupid as fuck power fantasy gore mod, its entirely fine, as a normal mod/game it just feels lacking in balance and honestly interesting features, the guns act pretty but don't have too much to them and really same for the core gameplay.
I'm not even going to touch on how Sgt Mark is a twat either, but that is a whole different topic and I can't help but touch on it because I do think it adds to my perception of Brutal Doom. He is such a disturbed violence obsessed moron who wanted actual gore in this, that really it is completely transparent that Brutal Doom is what he always wanted in a game, wanted in Doom, and I am sure in some way brings him a very deep enjoyment that regular people do not find in violence and gore.
[editline]20th May 2015[/editline]
TL:DR
I think its a decent mod, it has some cool content or cool ideas, but its evident who it was made by and for. People who want this "metal" "brutal" "badass" speed crack doom experience thats like totally badass and violent and shit
[editline]20th May 2015[/editline]
And Sgt Mark 4 is gay

I am happy to report that I keep contact with him sometimes, he is in college now and doing great.
We went a long way from me talking to him about the value of his life and that he doesn't have to throw it away, to him happily being in college.
Just saw your post now, don't wanna leave us on the edge of our seats.
I'm confused. When did all of this backlash against Brutal Doom start? Last I checked, it was a really well loved mod. Or was all of this negativity happening all along with only the people who liked it speaking up?
The original doom did have mouse support iirc.
[editline]20th May 2015[/editline]
so did wolf 3d
Sergeant Mark is not banned on DoomWorld.
However, he did say he likes the Call of Duty Doom 4 screenshots, so perhaps he should be.
The honest reality is that its a compound of multiple factors including Sgt Mark 4 as a person.
The "IS DIS COMPATATIBLE" thing got so bad that the ZDoom forum has certain rules and regulations about Brutal Doom now. Every mod until then literally had people begging for support for it.
Mark 4 is a bad person, Brutal Doom is an okay mod that loses appeal if you're not the target audience I discussed, and the community went fucking ballistic and won't stop sperging out over it.
In the end I don't think its too worth worrying about. Its an okay mod that is a one-flavor pony made by a neo-nazi asshole and the community flipped its shit over. Its just full of childish drama, that quite honestly stems from all 3 sides, the regular community, brutal doom's community, and sgt mark 4.
But its a fun mod I guess and its really not a bad thing to play, even Romero enjoys it, but as I said I think it really comes back to the person playing it.
pls add brutal doom compatability
pls
Man, I remember when the main drama regarding Brutal Doom was just ridiculous shit like "Oh my god, you can aim down the sites, he's trying to destroy our pristine community with CoD!!!"
I never would have guessed it would spiral into the gigantic drama fest that it is now.
When was it actually confirmed that mark is a neo-nazi
I'm not really into topic but this shit-talking about him has reached a point where my benefit of the doubt is starting to melt a bit
He has a few anti gay videos in his Youtube likes and has liked a few "white genocide" vids if I recall right.
Honestly, a lot of the drama gets fairly inflated after some time.

I have to go find the posts for you and honestly with all the stupid shit he has shoveled it would take a bit. But he does hold similar beliefs or some shit to that sort. Its been awhile and the drama is piled on high.
I don't know if I'll even look cause I gotta be honest, a casual chit-chat with people here is one thing, but I don't know if I care enough as a healthy sane adult to dedicate to this. No offense to you, speaking outloud as myself. I suppose I'll take a peek in a bit.

I think its stupid that its gotten inflated but he has no one to really blame but himself for his stupid attitude and actions. I am glad that beyond our curious chat about it though that the FP community for Doom is far away from all of it, cause really you put it best, its inflated.
I've said it once and I'll say it again:
Brutal Doom is to the Doom community what Rust is to Facepunch
Speaking of the FP doom community, do we have a steam group that we can chat in?
I don't think we do and that should be done sometime.

I always hear about that post. I was there when it happened and it wasn't *that* bad. Maybe I'm desensitized and don't really take any internet posting seriously, but the kid was being dumb and was basically writing a blog post in the projects forum, which would get him the same exact treatment and insults here, even if people would like to pretend it wouldn't. Should he have done it? No it was a dumb thing to say, but it was just as dumb to post the thread in the first place. The bitching about BD and the constant fights that result are worse than anything he's ever actually done.
I don't even really play BD that much anymore, I just boot it up every once in awhile, but the way the drama/legend has spiraled out of control is insane.

What Sarge did was definitely a dick move, but it's nowhere near as big as the drastic scale people seem to be putting it on nowadays.
For those who weren't there, he linked someone who was making some fairly angsty posts to a Wikipedia article about exit bags and said something along the lines of "kid wants a solution, i am giving him a Final Solution" when confronted.
I remember when people were going through a period of saying he had literally murdered the kid. What he did wasn't nice, but a lot of people are treating it as if he spent extensive time plotting to bully someone into suicide.

I'm not really an emotional guy myself but I don't think it was that stupid. I don't know the kid that well and didn't want to pry into everything but he pretty much felt alone and had nowhere else to go and thought that people there would help him or at least listen. From what I remember (its been a few years, I'll go dig through my PMs later).
I don't expect teenagers that feel suicidal thoughts to make the best decisions and I think to insult and berate them says a lot more about those people than it does the kid, especially as most people on the Zdoom forums seem to be in their later 20s to 30s.
Maybe the kid made a bad choice, maybe he didn't, but Mark 4's first reaction was to harp on him and say he doesn't care if he lives or dies, if anyone did that here, it would say everything I'd ever need to know about you and that is really that.
I'm also not sure about how people bitching and fighting over a game mod is worse than Mark 4 showing a kid how to kill himself and saying he doesn't care either way if he lives or dies. One is the possibility of a kid that feels he has no where else but a game community to get help from, the other is a shitty mod for a old ass game.

I think people who say he "literally murdered him" are stupid or listening to weird twisted rumors.
But I do think its a drastic thing, its a drastic thing to shit on someone who might actually be genuinely coming to a community they feel comfortable in and asking for help, not everyone is some douchebag attention whore and I treat everything I see as serious until I find out otherwise, because doing the exact opposite can and will lead to people dying.
Everyone deserves the benefit of doubt at least once. This is a community and I expect us to care for our own.
Brutal Doom reminds me a lot of ENB in the sense that the creator of both modifications generated most of the drama themselves by being awful people.

It is funny how things work I guess. I got to admit though I expected this thread to reach meltdown.
Speaking of mods, are there any mods that put weapons to the side rather than in the center of the screen ? I know center weapons are a staple of doom but I'd like to see something different.

Yeah, that's definitely true. I was trying to emphasize how blown up drama can get after a long period of rumors and bias snow balling themselves into it.
Anyway, to drag the thread back on topic, does anyone know of any decent "Mario Party" type mods? I don't actually mean Doom themed Mario Party, although that would be fucking amazing, I just mean things that are non-conventional and fun to screw around with, especially with friends. Like Reelism.
are you looking for mods that add weapons and only weapons?
give trailblazer a spin
or guncaster
and possibly demonsteele
or russian overkill if your pc can take particle effects up the ass
if you were looking to add some monster replacing mod to the mix, the latter two won't take it lightly
Most of the weapons in Neo Doom are held on the side of the screen IIRC, but I'm not entirely sure if that's what you're looking for.
Already tried demonsteele and russian overkill, they're both great. Project MSX and Zero Tolerance weren't really my cup of tea, though.
I'll give the rest a shot.
Have you tried Crossfire? It's kinda Metal Gear Solid 3 meets Doom with slight RPG elements.
