I've noticed that sometimes the Plasma Gun gibs enemies in Doom 2, is it random or is there actually something that causes it?
I've noticed that sometimes the Plasma Gun gibs enemies in Doom 2, is it random or is there actually something that causes it?
Taken off the wiki: "Plasma gun will sometimes kill gib troopers and sergeants due to their rather low health (20 and 30 hit points respectively, while each plasma burst can do as much as 40)"
The only Doom 1/2 Weapon which I do not like is... BFG9000. IMO, you don't use it for low-level enemies, since it's a waste, and when used against the CD/SM, it still needs to pump a few shots off, to actually kill them. IMO, first time I played Doom 1 and got to Dis, I kept my BFG ready for the final boss. So I run out, right into the SM, fire BFG a few times and... the end screen appears, as I kill the Mastermind. To this day, one of the most anti-climatic bosses in a game which I got through.

Which, in a case like Dis, doesn't matter much for the risks since you're ending the game anyway (unless you have a mod that then carries you onto Thy Flesh Consumed).
To be fair, the bosses in Doom were not exactly boss bosses, at least in terms of their defences (what they did varied, but what you had to do to them was usually the same). From what I remember, it was usually just a matter of how much health the enemies had, nothing as deep as armour penetration or energy resistance, though the game probably didn't need it at the time. Usually the pro tip for Doom's bosses was "shoot it until it dies".
Well, at least Cyberdemon fight was fun, because unless you knew it, you'd be fighting using Gimped rockets (because only direct damage counts, IIRC), but it was still exciting back and forth combat.

Technically if there were more power weapons for blasting a boss enemy than the Rocket Launcher and BFG (the SSG not counting due its slow fire rate), they'd probably be more efficient at damaging a Cyberdemon than just pumping rockets into its knees. But because of how the weapon set works, you're just better off spamming rockets unless you've got the energy ammunition and BFG to spare.
They were? Huh, must've been some very subtle nuance since I never realised, though I WAS in my early teens when I last played the original Doom. Plus the game never told me about explosive resistances neither.
i'd argue that the best enemy that doom 2 added was either the archvile or hellknight an intimidating yet balanced in it's own way alternative to the baron that needs new tactics or a more common, lesser variant of the baron but revenants, fuck those fucking 80 damage seeker missile bullshit that they use at close range when you try to bait whiffs
I just want a speed/thrash metal soundtrack. I hated Doom 3's soundtrack.
I just want a speed/thrash metal soundtrack. I hated Doom 3's soundtrack.
Wasn't Doom3 more ambient noises and stuff. with very little music? Which I think the PSX and N64 dooms both did that too.
Wasn't Doom3 more ambient noises and stuff. with very little music? Which I think the PSX and N64 dooms both did that too.
It had some music. Honestly, I don't think ambient, creepy soundtracks work for Doom. I'd take ripoffs of Slayer and Megadeth songs over that any day.

Also someone tell me when the next Brutal Doom comes out.
So, not to hijack the thread but, preview 2 time. This is a very early work in progress of that previous dungeon where I showed off the claymore, obviously no where near finished. This scripted intro/event is not done yet and I promise will be really cool, after which the dungeon/game will open up. I just figure I've worked a bit on it so I may as well show you guys. Ya'll niggas gonna hate it cause its gonna involve reading and puzzles and scripted things, I'm aiming for Hexen + Daggerfall meets Shadowgate 64. Equal parts action and exploration to story and puzzles. [editline]25th May 2015[/editline] [I]"Your head is pounding. Usually when I go into dungeons I pack a flash-light.
can't see shit m8
Already told you it was the video compression, hopefully the next vid won't be such a shitter. I'll try reuploading this later.
too bad nigga ur barebackin this bitch
Too bad Hexen never got the popularity Doom got. The engine had a lot of potential.
Too bad Hexen never got the popularity Doom got. The engine had a lot of potential.
It is a shame, but at least with modern engines we get the best of everything and can fuck around with Hexen to our heart's content
Too bad Hexen never got the popularity Doom got. The engine had a lot of potential.
Hexen deserves a reboot, really. And no half-assed RPG elements, just a straight first person "beat the fuck out of monsters" game with lots of puzzles.
It is a shame, but at least with modern engines we get the best of everything and can fuck around with Hexen to our heart's content
Well, it's just now it's almost easier to do the whole thing in a ZDoom fork and not bother with Hexen. Probably because iirc Hexen/Heretic for a long time didn't have HackEd tools.
Hexen deserves a reboot, really. And no half-assed RPG elements, just a straight first person "beat the fuck out of monsters" game with lots of puzzles.
Hexen's sequel was pretty sick too but no-one played it.
what, are you telling me you didn't like how fuckin cryptic it was?
I did like that, I'm saying it should be like that if it gets rebooted. I just don't want it to have some boring-ass tossed in RPG elements like a lot of games seem to think is necessary these days. :v:
The only part of Hexen i like is when you come out of the grave and go into the cathedral -- then you blow up the monks with teh dynamite.
The only part of Hexen i like is when you come out of the grave and go into the cathedral -- then you blow up the monks with teh dynamite.
Ah yes, Bloody Hexen, just like Hexen was to Doom, it is the lesser known cousin to Brutal Doom
Hexen remains as my favorite Doom engine game, mostly because it made my inner nerd happy. Choose a class with different weapons and effects of items. Going around beating everything with no time to stop because new enemies tend to spawn. But yeah, the puzzles tend to get a bit confusing, but it was a thing of back then, when you had to write stuff down. Good times.
Ah yes, Bloody Hexen, just like Hexen was to Doom, it is the lesser known cousin to Brutal Doom
If you're a fighter and you punch a bad guy, they cry blood and then they melt and then your character gives them The Finger and steps on their head.
Ah yes, Bloody Hexen, just like Hexen was to Doom, it is the lesser known cousin to Brutal Doom
Wasn't Sgt. Mark IV working on Brutal Hexen at one point, actually?
Honestly, I think id should just get Kerry King from Slayer to write and record Doom 4's soundtrack. The music of the series will come full-circle.

Like, I never associated any of the music in Doom with metal because it never remotely sounded like guitars to me.
