Hyped either way. I love that in gzDoom, I can load up some crazy violent mods and some metal music for a good time. Or pick up Hideous Destructor, and ambient and lighting pack, and suddenly it's a survival horror game.
Another good mod for Survival Horror stuff is Shut Up And Bleed. It's even better if you had Dark Doom and the flashlight addon, too. I play it with the PS1 soundtrack and it becomes genuinely pretty creepy and tense.
Like, think about the contrast between E1M1 on PC Doom and PSX Doom. Virtually same level. Virtually same enemies. Considerably different aura going about the level.
PSX Doom's colored lighting (same thing that 64 did well) helps considerably. Of course along with the updated sound effects, too. In a couple maps it's almost impossible to see anything.
There is a PSX Doom mod for PC
Doom? On the Commodore 64? Yeah, it's possible [sp]if you have your C64 equipped with a SuperCPU[/sp]
Kinda reminds me of how, with a bit of mechanical magic, some guy was able to hack a printer to play Doom. But let's just be thankful it isn't the version for the Game.com system, especially since Doom didn't get ported to that system. Duke Nukem 3D wasn't so lucky, though.
Why si that
(skip ahead to any time where there is gameplay) released in 1998 by Tec Toy and only for the South American market, this port brings you an unrivaled Duke Nukem 3D experience the likes of which you have never seen. You guys thought the SNES port of Doom 1 was something else, well, there you go (I am honestly not sure if this was officially licensed or not, the 3D Realms logo is on it but WHO KNOWS. All I know is, it was sold at one point. Impressive for the Genesis I guess. The Game.com version is worse, though.)
wolfenduke
Get Psyched!
There is a PSX Doom mod for PC
Can you transmit its features to other mods, though? The colored lighting and all.
No clue http://www.doomworld.com/vb/wads-mods/57957-psx-doom-final-doom-tc-version-2-1-now-released/ [editline]26th May 2015[/editline] Ninja Xubs
coloured lighting is hella easy to do. just load up gzdoombuilder and edit the sector colour
What did you make the sprite from, Oblivion? It looks like one of the battle axes in that game.
Actually it's the black Axem ranger's axe from SMRPG, there's some nice models on the Gmod workshop
I keep seeing your vids and still don't know what mod it is. Fucking good work as always though. Is there a beta or something?
This is my side project, combined arms, no beta or anything but it shouldn't be too much longer before this thing is ready
Most of the songs in the original soundtrack were ripoffs of 80s metal. Shawn's Got the Shotgun from Doom 2 was just South of Heaven. It would make sense for id to hire some olds guitarists from 80s metal bands to work on the soundtrack. That, or get Bobby Prince back.
Yeah everyone knows, Doom trivia 101. But it doesn't for me because it never sounded like metal guitars in the first place. I never connected Pantera with clipped saw-tooth waves even if some of the notes were the same.
Depends on the soundcard, mate.
Well, I think back to my childhood and attaching the MIDI out of my Soundblaster 16 to a Roland keyboard. Sometimes the driver would glitch out and fail to send patch SysEx so you got to hear all-piano renditions of the soundtrack. Doom for Win95 had this problem a lot iirc.
i'm liking how active this thread got after that trailer also i'm trying to DECORATE some nuclear throne esque weapons from the crazier end of the spectrum super flak cannon is done, tiny little bits of lead everywhere grenade shotgun is 100% kickass and once all explosion sizes are done i can get to making the nuke launcher not sure what i'm going to do with bolt weapons
https://powerslaveex.wordpress.com/ PowerSlave EX is released. Now you can play the best version of PowerSlave/Exhumed on PC.
Hexen's sequel was pretty sick too but no-one played it.
Hexen II had potential. hub1 was fantastic. very cool atmosphere. enjoyable puzzles that you could eventually figure out yourself. Kickass medieval areas. then came along aztec and egypt. aztec was just all the same over and over and egypt was a goddamn chore. after a while I actually had to look up for info online because jesus fucking christ it is confusing. Especially with two dials (actually, three) with each a dozen choices? what the fuck man. By the time I ended it I was so fucking burnt out I didn't even enjoy the greek area at all. Then I reached the cathedral and pretty much uninstalled the game after I met those fallen angels with automatic lasers and block locks. This is literally a miracle I managed to actually get dissapointed on a game running on the quake engine. Plus it was so bloated with inventory items I didn't even bother ever using them. Too much stuff. Even the cool tome of power fell flat with unimpressive effects. The horsemen also sucked. They were either absolutely harmless or hitting overwhelmingly hard. a shame. Has anyone ever tried Heretic II? From what I remember it got turned into a third-person shooter? what was that all about.
a shame. Has anyone ever tried Heretic II? From what I remember it got turned into a third-person shooter? what was that all about.
You wouldn't even realize it's supposed to be a sequel past the intro. It's more like a third-person platformer with a vastly improved staff for melee and magic spells replacing the weapon variety.
I played the original Hexen a long time ago, along with Heretic, but never got my hands on Hexen 2.
I'm late as fuck, but IMO Sunn O))) is an amazing choice for an ambient-style soundtrack Just listen to how demonic this sounds. EDIT: Not saying I prefer doom with more eerie, ambient tracks; I love the blood-pumping and hectic metal tracks as much as I do the creepy and atmospheric ones.
Better have some more of this [sp]heyyy[/sp]
Sounds more like Dan 81 to me.

Now a FPS game like Blood could definitely work with that drone sound. Quake also had an ambient soundtrack (theme track aside). I thought Trent Reznor did a damn good job with it. A shame he didn't get to do the soundtrack to Doom 3, though I do believe he was involved with the title theme. Oh how I wish we got another Quake game that retained the original game's theme...
I don't get why people say all of doom is fast paced adrenaline pumping metal music, its not all like that.

But in actuality: Doom is XY (and possibly Z)
Indeed, select pieces were more sinister "horror" pieces to build on the sense that this wasn't just a murderous romp through the otherworld, but also a journey through a sinister world of twisted alien horror. Come to think of it, the whole "invasion from the otherworld, triggered by man dabbling in things he should have left alone" was a popular plot device for older shooters, most likely inspired by Stephen King's The Mist. Half-Life was more obviously influenced, due to it once being called Quiver in reference to Project Arrowhead, but I think we can safely say that The Mist was likely an inspirational factor for Doom's plot, and by extension Quake, as well as Heretic and Hexen to an extent.
Quake and Doom are certainly more Lovecraft-ian but I'm biased because Stephen King is bad.
Honestly, Doom is just Evil Dead 2. It's not straight horror, or just adrenaline-pumping, heavy metal demon slaughtering (or Three Stooges-style slapstick, in Evil Dead 2's case). It's a perfect blend of both, though leaning just a little more toward the latter.
Back in the early 90's everyone thought it was scary as hell. It's only goofy now because of how it aged. The pulpy humor and silly Biblical references were easy to overlook when it was the darkest and most technologically-accomplished shooter of its time; especially compared to games like Blood and Duke Nukem.
You guys keep mentioning Blood. And I keep wanting to play it. Were there any modern ports for it made?
