I wanted to make a short campaign where you play as an imp (since I wrote up a fist that shoots imp fireballs) but sadly I'm not great with mapping and art skills are nonexistent. Though it is one of my rainy day ideas, along with attempting to rebuild every texture out of legos and then take pictures and put them back in the game so the world is "legofied"

The interesting thing about this is when you consider the Revenant's height and physique, the dude's fucking tall. He's, like, at least 8' or 9', way taller than any human.
In fact, there's only two demons that fit that size...the Cyberdemon and the Archvile.

I've never really understood the tip to bait their melee attacks. I always just get a rocket to the face pointblank. Is that a modded thing or vanilla behavior that's rare?

I've managed to do it before, but it's real damn risky. Run up to their face, have them pull out a punch animation and back away before they sock you. The problem is that they may decide to fire just before you get into punching range, which just sets you up for a rocket to the face at that point.

Yeah, I can't tell if they actually have a point blank ranged attack, or I'm dodging *just* far enough away to trigger it instead of a melee so it looks like they switch really fast.
I really dislike revenants. All the other enemies are fun to fight, and it feels like it takes skill and reflexes to avoid their attacks, but revenant just turn the game into a slog where I have to peek around corners and take pot shots or else I just get destroyed

Archviles are far worse than revenants if you're talking about undodgeable attacks. At least you have some chance of dodging a revenent's homing missiles even without cover. An archvile though, your only option is either to take cover or luck out and line things up so another monster attacks it before it can hit you.
I recently discovered archviles target switch instantly even if they're casting their spell, can give you a massive surprise if you think it's targeting a monster from infighting and you damage the archvile in time for it to switch to you.

Dammit. I've actually torn through a few Megawads, at least partially, with HD. It's really rough. Scythe and packs with low monster count, non-slaughtery work best.

However the addition of new particle effects and the like makes everything feel a lot more lethal, if you want something that's pretty close to doom's original gameplay without going too overboard (EG Brutal Doom)
