Doom 3: BFG Edition upsets me because I just want a version of Doom 3 that looks decent on modern systems without a lot of tinkering, but it has so many problems that it makes me want to stomach the original game's graphical issues just so I can skip cutscenes, have more save slots, and not have the whole fucking game pause for a second every time it saves.
Having seen some edited images which unfuck the colour palette for Doom 4 I've gotta say I pretty much universally love the enemy designs since those edits bring out a lot of details in the designs.
Details like the arms hanging off the cacodemon, the pacific rim kaiju blue on the cyberdemon, the marine armour on the imps(or are they zombies without guns?), the blood on the revenant, hell the entire revenant is pretty much perfect IMO so I don't mind how they're pushing that enemy in all the marketting.

I kind of wish people would at least backport the HUD from BFG Edition because of how much cleaner it looks. And maybe port or recreate the flashlight for the hell of it so people have it as a mod option.

Just use regular doom 3 with sikkmod and wulfentextures.
We're getting quite close to the end of the thread. Should someone whip up a new OP while we wait [sp]that doesn't link to illegal copies of Doom? :V[/sp].

Right now i'm playing through sunder.wad by myself, holy shit it's hard, so many traps with hundreds of enemies.

It's certainly something. The architecture and overall level design is great though.

You can mod the game yourself, there are some really good texture packs out there, and Sikkmod is highly customizable, so you don't have to deal with over the top ENB presets
I know I don't shut up about it but Doom 64 had some really cool level design. Most of the levels had a lot of scripted events. A lot of times they were obvious, and it made it pretty tense. Other levels were a straight up deathmatch. The progression into hell was so cool, it felt like you were fighting your way in. The really sad thing is, they had intended to do so, so much more, but were held back by the cartridge and all that beta work is lost. They wanted to make a Doom 64 II, purely for multiplayer, but it was scrapped.
Real shame, if they had gone the whole ten yards and released the missing content, it could easily be called the real Doom 3. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll ever see the leak (probably because it's all gone) that games like Starfox 2 did.
I never understood the business with those "monster keys" in D64 and I couldn't ever find them anyway.
The only memorable thing I got from doom64 was how the endboss shoots revenants missiles that fly faster than you run on -fast. That was pure terror.
imo Doom 64 is pretty much the real Doom 3. It certainly feels more like Doom than the official 3 did.

Honestly most of the issues with 3 stems from how fucking dark the game is.
thought it was obvious theyre "demonifying" rather than "zombifying"
[editline]19th June 2015[/editline]
only thing that really sets me off from the monster designs is how i cant tell apart any of the lower class demons, they all look like a doom 3 hellknight crossbred with an imp
Honestly I think the imps are pretty cool, they are the only ones with visible spines and seem to have no eyes. They have similar anatomy to the D3 imp, but are reminiscent of the classic imp and it's nice to see.
The others I agree about though, the zombies kind of blur the line between hellspawn, especially what I think might be a chaingun guy (unless he's the regular former human now??) who shoots plasma and lasers. Other than that though I'm really loving the demon designs.
Also if what people say is true and that thing in the second trailer with horns was a baron, I really like that. The D3 hellknight was really cool IMO and it's a great way to separate a reskin into its own creature by using D3 for hellknights and revised classic for barons.
the cyberdemon still should stop eating so many steroid burgers though

Yeah, sikkmod and such can be tricky to get working just right. Doom 3 still looks surprisingly great with the right mods though.
I don't really like the new Doom 4 zombies either. I can deal with the other monster designs, but I'm not a fan of these weird Strogg/Demon hybrids that shoot energy blasts or whatever. They should be zombies toting the same guns you carry.

Yeah, Doom 64 is the true Doom 3 in my eyes. Similar gameplay to Doom 1 and 2 but much better levels, music and atmosphere.
At the very least it seems like they are deliberately avoiding hitscan enemies in favor of making everything dodgeable, which is weird, and actually kind of refreshing to see a AAA game try to do.
EDIT: About the color of the game, look at this point in the snapmap vid
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiinO9JPUGw&feature=youtu.be&t=13m1s
Makes it seem less like a filter and more like there's a heavy amount of colored lighting, which given the yellow color of the sky in hell and the orange color of the smelting plant in the UAC base, makes sense.
Also if you look at the first demo again, when he uses the severed hand the room almost has a slight blue tinge - which leads me to believe even more that it's mostly the colored lighting and not as much a filter.

There's 3 of them, only in the secret levels. They serve two functions:
1. They power up the Unmaker from a shitty Plasma Rifle to a tri-splitting laser death machine. (Power, Spread, and Speed)
2. They let you close spawning doors on the final boss making the fight less spammy and much easier.

Yeah, it's obviously heavily environmental in terms of lighting, but people jumped the gun as per usual. "PISS AND SEPHIA FILTERS"
I might be wrong or late but I think you might be able to play as other monsters other than the revenant.
Look at the snap map trailer at around 14:32, the window under the word Snap.
Looks different to the revenant one in the way his hands are and I think that's horns instead of rockets.

If I remember right the devs already confirmed it was more than just the Revenant.

If environmental lighting has the same effect as an awful Fallout 3 style color filter, then it's not done well imo.
Whether that's the fault of bland/greyish monsters/environments picking up on the color, or just bathing it in too much - there are better ways to go around it.
Rage was a bit in the opposite direction. It was heavily washed out, but that does, in a way, fit the apocalpytic scenario. Even then, they were able to fit color into the game.

And I sure do hate to use the same image everyone has been, but then look here again:

It's not just bad, it's oppressively bad. It's a color dictatorship. You have a very narrow band of yellow-to-red (almost entirely yellow) and it's just not even remotely attractive in my eyes.
Even the new Wolfenstein games were able to handle color far better, even when flooding it for effect.

I personally like the look of it
I personally like the look of it
I can't get behind it due to experience, namely with Fallout 3.
I wouldn't care remotely if it was an optional thing, but for me, it's a negative. I can't be too worked up about it, though, because if it stays - modders will have it removed in a few hours after launch.
imo Doom 64 is pretty much the real Doom 3. It certainly feels more like Doom than the official 3 did.
Especially since it is the direct followup to Doom II.
Would've been awesome to see the Doom 64 revenant.
I personally like the look of it
It could look better, but that "But with Doom 1-style colours!" paintover that's been going around just screams MSPaint to me. There's a line between drab and gaudy, and neither side has been able to find and stand on it.
