They're the same game, BFG has a few more levels but people are complaining about the FOV and what-not. If you want to play the entirety of Doom 3, get BFG. If you just want the original release (without expansion), pick up the original.
As I'm living in Germany I wanted a friend who lives in Austria to buy the normal version as a gift for me.

Yeah, they also took away the ability to buy the Master Levels and the Final Doom levels. As in, you can't even buy them anymore. The pages are still there, just no buy button.
Slightly confused on that bit.
Edit: that also includes being unable to buy the id software pack. There's no option to buy that either on those pages. Thus, those two cannot currently be bought. So no, not late, relevant information.
Oh yeah, I should also mention that I'm in the US and I can't find the id software pack. The option simply isn't there for me.

Normal graphics are fine. Every graphics mod out there takes hours of tweaking to not look terrible.

Bought BFG Edition for 360 last night for my Halloween party and was greatly disappointed in the lack of split screen co-op.
Multiplayer is a joke too. The host has at all times 0 ping. Everyone else? at least 200. Bullshit, can't play like that. So what did I do? I managed to join two other players during my matches for achievement whoring. Now I am glad to say I'll never have to touch that horrible thing again.
As for singleplayer, either it's been a really long time or they've changed a lot of levels. I recognize a few places but for the most part it all mostly seems new to me.

The aliens pulse rifle does kinda look like it, but the handle is too long. It would look better if you compressed the receiver overall, made the handle a bit shorter and shifted it to the back.
