Doom 1's second chapter master race
Found an interesting DLL, giving bloom and SSAO, that can be inserted into OpenGL games - including things like GZDoom (although I haven't quite figured out Doomsday yet), and decided to screw around with some mods, trilinear filter and HQN4X for a fake sense of HD. It wasn't the greatest, though, and was mostly just a result of boredom. So is Doom 3 BFG Edition actually any good? Most of the stuff I've heard is the unpleasant stuff about its visuals and the re-used maps, but has the gameplay itself improved at all?
BFG Edition is cheap console port. Even "Lost Missions" not worth getting it.
BFG Edition is cheap console port. Even "Lost Missions" not worth getting it.
This is 99% of what I hear about BFG, and it's not what I was asking.
This is 99% of what I hear about BFG, and it's not what I was asking.
As far as I know the only significant gameplay change is the ability to use your flashligh while using another weapon, which some people argue actually kills the game even though it was one of the largest complaints about the original game.
Blazing through Doom 3 BFG, it's been a long time. I remember buying this in tandem with HL2 for my new PC back in 04' for Christmas. The game still gives me a rush when I play it, it's one of the few games that give me the red mist when playing, there's a lot to be said for pummelling demons heads in with your bare hands.

Simultaneously, there's more ammo and health around, making the game a bit easier. I think they also removed the 'zoom' function, meaning you can't do more precise aiming over range. Not sure if enemy health or strength changed, but yeah, the increased item amounts made it easier for some folks playing on Nightmare.
As far as I know the only significant gameplay change is the ability to use your flashligh while using another weapon
The flashlight change has vast ramifications to the gameplay, rendering some sequences largely pointless (i.e. escorting the scientist holding a lantern). However, that's not the only gameplay change: - Both health and ammo have been vastly increased in the BFG Edition. The secret supply caches are barely needed. - The FOV has been decreased from 90 to 65. (Image Comparison) - Some scripted sequences in the BFG Edition are broken, causing some enemies to appear too early or never appear at all. - All of the unique arcade minigames in Resurrection of Evil have been replaced by Super Turbo Turkey Puncher 3 for some unexplained reason. This renders some secrets inaccessible. - In Resurrection of Evil, the radiation hazmat suit was completely removed, instead allowing the player to survive in the toxic Waste Tunnels without any visible means of protection. This is a fairly blatant move to dumb down the game's difficulty. - Edit: The moving speed in the BFG Edition is slightly faster. (Source) This is just a simple change of the pm_walkspeed, pm_runspeed, and pm_crouchspeed console variables. There are also a number of visual changes aside from the increased lighting levels, namely some new character skins (but not re-recorded video screens, causing some characters to inexplicably change appearance part way through the game) and visible compression artifacts due to the lack of uncompressed textures.
Found this by accident while searching google: Heretic Soundtrack V2 (not the same remixes as the videos below) Some of the remixes are pretty good. Man Heretic had an awesome soundtrack. Although some of the level-design is kind of up in the air when it comes to logic, way more-so then Doom or Hexen, but Kevin Schilder did a great job on all the Heretic/Hexen games. We don't have a Wolfenstein thread so I guess I'll post it here http://www.3drealms.com/rott/originalspec.html This is probably years old, but I never knew it. Rise of the Triads started as a sequel to Wolfenstein 3D.
I believe they decided to break it from Wolf because they didn't want to keep pumping out wolf stuff, internal or external, because it would have taken away from Doom.

B-but what about Heretic?
Oh fuck yes. Eh, heretic's weapons are pretty satisfying as is - Hexen's weapons were always pretty weak feeling, especially compared to Hexen 2's, so it's something the game needs much more. Though brutal heretic would be pretty sick as well.
Aren't Heretic's weapons the weakest out of the bunch, though? They always felt really unsatisfying to shoot for me. Heretic could probably use the Brutal treatment more, since it at least has decent levels unlike Hexen.
I meant gameplay wise, the shooting is much more fun in general in heretic then the button mashing in hexen.
Aren't Heretic's weapons the weakest out of the bunch, though? Heretic's level design made even less sense then the later levels of Doom 2 did.
The only thing Hexen had going for it was the fact that it looked pretty, IMO.
Heretic is more FPS than RPG, when Hexen is more RPG than FPS.
Heretic is medieval Doom. It's fun, but that's pretty much what it is. Even the weapons are literally replacement sprites save for like 1 or 2 weapons: Electric Gauntlets: Chainsaw Staff: Punch Wand: Pistol Ethereal Crossbow: Shotgun Dragon's Claw: Chaingun HellStaff: Plasma Rifle Phoenix Rod: Rocket Launcher Hexen wasn't perfect, but at least they were trying something different.

Pretty sure they fit the theme rather well, and it's much funner game than hexen. Hexen was like a demo for Hexen 2.
Man, I played through Hexen's first hub on the ultra-violence equivalent that I forgot the name of as Fighter. Once I got to the second hub and tried one of the levels, I just gave up. It's so fucking boring and monotonous, not to mention it's the bad kind of vague with how a switch will change something on a completely different map/area and you have to go backtrack through everything to find the difference. Even with the alpha of that Brutal Hexen mod, the combat's also still 'go back and forth to avoid attacks while still hitting foes' over and over. Livens it up, but meh.
Wish I had access to some non-school computers, I'd really like to take a look at Brutal Hexen, but image hosts are blocked here.
I...I think I'm gonna need some new pants.
Happy birthday Doom, you're 19 now.
Happy birthday Doom, you're 19 now.
It's hard to believe that I'm 3 years older than this game.
It's hard to believe that I'm 3 years older than this game.
I'm older than the game by a mere seven months. :v:
