Decided to try the batman mod for the first time ever. I can't play it without thinking about spikey and barley and laugh my ass at every move.
That mod is one of the most baffling mods that I've ever played.
Heh, since I get emails, I can still answer the question. Yes it still has an active multiplayer community. Get Zandronum and run Doomseeker. There's generally a good number of servers up, with most being either Doom2 or Megagame (the megaman wad, of which is exceptionally good).
'megaman wad' being megaman 8bit deathmatch by cutmanmike?
Looking through the blood alpha files with the Duke3D "bastart" utility to find the really cool alpha sawn-off shotgun sprite, noticed some of the other sprites in the .art files [t]http://i5.minus.com/ib1ikOgzGF4USi.jpg[/t] I know it's common for devs to use other assets for placeholders, but I would've expected stuff from Duke considering it's a build engine game

This mod is for the people who is looking the ultimate extreme Doom action: http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=37611 A post in the second page explains the weapons if you don't want to discover for yourself how to use them.

What's the general opinion on Doom 3? I'm considering getting it for Xbox but I don't want to waste £9 in case it sucks
It's fun if you want to kill some time, I wouldn't pay that much money for it though.
It's a downgraded port of the PC version. I think some of the maps got downsized or altered, and there's system link co-op, but otherwise it's not much to write home about unless you (somehow) don't have a PC that can play the original. Even the BFG Edition has more worth on the 360 or PS3 aside from the co-op. If we're talking Doom 3 itself, though, it's a decent corridor shooter. It's not bad, i'd say, by any stretch of the imagination - it just tends to drag on and try and repeat its jumpscares too many times.
For me Doom 3 was constantly hear in the radio people screaming and then the game basically turns like this: Enter room, enemies spawn, kill enemies, next room, repeat. Is fun in some way, but is slow fun.
Overall I quite enjoyed Doom 3 (especially in coop). It's not the most amazing game ever but it's pretty fun, and I also liked the use of combination lockers for equipment (sort of like secrets), it was kind of cool looking through PDAs to find combos. Also if you get the original, sikkmod and the POM texture packs makes the game look absolutely gorgeous.

I love the originals as well, but D3 is just a different kind of game. I've never been able to get sikkmod/Perfected Doom 3 working entirely properly, I always end up with some weird screen glitching. Are there certain settings you need to set in the sikkmod options to get it looking right?
I haven't played it in a while, but I remember it requiring me to copy or rename certain shaders before it worked properly or something like that. I also recall seeing other people with brown smears of shit on their screen when trying to get it to work so I could have just been lucky.
If you want to play Doom 3, play with the Perfected Doom 3 mod. It improves the gunplay dramatically, and makes the game far more tense. [editline]edited[/editline] Go with 5.0 though, 6.0 and above adds incredibly shitty effects and ENB that darken the game far too much, and makes it a general eyesore. [editline]edited[/editline] Actually don't, take a look at the below post to see why.
Actually don't play with perfected doom 3. It changes a lot of the gameplay in ways I thought were dumb. The main killer for me was the shotgun's spread and damage (which the original, in comparison to the size of the maps, was quite balanced) is replaced with an almost non-existent spread with lower damage. For me this made the shotgun waaay too good, and waaay too unsatisfying. I was one-shotting imps across the map, and when I got in close in personal-- the damage didn't change. It really removed the reward for sprinting in POINT BLANK and blowing the SHIT out of their face with every pellet. The damage values were really fucked up for enemies too. For example the imp's jump-claw animation that's often used to jump-scare you when opening doors was almost tripled. It's almost impossible to dodge it when opening doors so it's like a random instant 75hp drain. Enemy AI was "adjusted" to make them to utilize cover more: which actually messed up a lot of areas where enemies, instead of immediately firing at you, would idiotically run for cover a mile away while you shot the shit out of them. Lots of the enemies attacks were turned into instant-kill attacks as well, but I've never encountered them because I couldn't stand playing after I realized how fucked up the shotgun was. Some of the secondary fires on the weapons were really dumb as well, for example the pistol has a shotgun ?? and the machinegun has a shotgun ??? i wouldn't be surprised if the rocket launcher had a shotgun as well (hint: it does). The graphical "enhancement" they added makes the game's visuals really buggy as well. They increased all the heightmaps which causes things like rocks to shiver like a mirage as you look at them, and lots of geometry in the maps that used heightmaps were broken. If anything I recommend installing sikkmod, texture packs, and model packs that you want then playing the game normally. Nothing beats classic Doom3's shotgun. So fucking satisfying. [editline]asf[/editline] OH YEAH AND THEY NERFED FISTS AND FLASHLIGHT. It's like they want you to play the game like a pussy. I actually enjoy fisting zombies in the dark thank you very much
Perfected doom3 is turrible and is actually a blatant ripoff of sikk + the Abandon series If you want gameplay changes: http://doom3.filefront.com/file/Abandon_All_Hope_DooM_III;91009 http://doom3.filefront.com/file/Abandon_All_Hope_In_Hell;91012 Perfected basically took all the monster stuff without taking the weapon and movement stuff that was done to compensate balance.
What I do is just use Wolfen and whoever else's texture pack (none of the heightmaps) and extract the high-res models from Doom 3 HD and use the duct tape mod as well as modify the health for certain enemies like lost souls and the damage values for things like the pistol. Makes the game look and play relatively well without becoming a glitchy and bloated mess.

hrmm. I'll have to look around. Yeah Filefront is pretty shit. http://www.gamefront.com/files/10601162/Abandon_All_Hope_DooM_III http://www.gamefront.com/files/10603713/Abandon_All_Hope_In_Hell

Abandon causes everyone to look like they have bad acne, are wearing fur coats, and everything seems to be soaking wet. There is also an odd ambient-light thing going on with the player which causes shadows to constantly move and flicker about whenever I get close to anything. Also, the sound replacements are pretty awful.
Wrack has been greenlit tbh I think Wrack is incredibly flawed but a doom clone getting popular is a good thing in my eyes.
It's the same guy who made skulltag that is developing Wrack.

So I just got done playing a hidden gem of a wad called Damnation. It was released relatively recently ( 06/25/13, to be exact), and I HIGHLY recommend giving it a go.

So I'm trying to play the expansion to doom 3 and it isn't saving my resolution, I change it and upon restarting its still at the lowest one. Anyone know of a fix?
I can't seem to play it without getting tons of texture errors.
I think you need to select the following with shift + click: Damnation.wad, cc4-tex.wad, q2tex.wad, skulltag_actors.pk3, and skulltag_data.pk3. If you also want Brutal Doom, select that as well, and drag all the files over to the zandronum.exe

Also, I'm really impressed at the amount of new assets in this wad. Although I'm not a big fan of how little ammo I'm given, I ran out in the second level and had to resort to running away and punching things, and then I died getting a key.

I did it on Harsh and didn't have too much of a problem with ammo, save for the last 5 or so levels.
