I enjoy the more detailed levels. They don't have to be super detailed, but I like enough detail that I can tell what the map is trying to be, like Hellbound does. Doom 1 has a pretty good balance between simple and still being able to identify what the hell you're inside; I never liked Doom 2's maps because they were too abstract and weird.
I'm extremely late to the party, but there is a real plague in the Doom community called "over-detail" - in which someone details just for the sake of and it adds basically nothing to the level.
This is going to be extremely opinion, but:
This is over-detail. It adds nothing to the map, it clashes badly, and it just looks bad.
[t]http://i.cubeupload.com/Iw0Hsi.png[/t]
This is detail for the sake of detail. It can still add to the map, and at least it looks nice now, but is it really needed? (This is Gothic 99, so they were aiming for that.)
[t]http://i.cubeupload.com/WZcIba.jpg[/t]
This is good detail. It adds to the map, is done tastefully, and isn't detail for the sake of detail. It's detail for the sake of map aesthetics.
i never expected people to praise doom64. ight be an issue with skipping it completely back in the day.
I think a fair chunk of the people praising it might be people who have played the PC TC of it. The original N64 version kinda isn't that great since it suffers from the same general issues that all console FPS games of that era suffered from. The TC is just fine though.
Even for a slaughter map, 10 arch-viles in one room is a bit too much
How do you even deal with that
The best I can imagine is being a corner-camper and backing in and out of a safe spot repeatedly to shoot at them before they blow you away. I don't know what that room is like so I can't judge, but in my mind it's virtually impossible to do it any other way without some sort of cover in that room to let you isolate Archviles for rockets/SSG, a power-up to survive/avoid the damage, or a BFG (and even the BFG is insanely risky) - and if they can come out of the room, you need one hell of a safe spot elsewhere.
Detail makes maps interesting. I mean yeah I hate overly busy maps too (Why I don't play a lot of new multiplayer shooters) but detail helps convey the setting to you better.

They can come out, and there's like, a few pillars but the Archies can just go around and attack you that way. Also Spheres are incredibly hard to come by from my memory, and health kits aren't even THAT plentiful.
The stuff people do architecturally with the older Doom games makes me never want to get anywhere in mapping, it just doesn't even seem fair. :v:
(All of those except the last green-ish one taken from Sunder.wad.)
[t][/t][t][/t]
What's that last one from then?
You think Scythe's bad, I cry myself to sleep every night over CHILLAX.WAD.
It's a little bit much even with Russian Overkill.
There's slaughtermaps, and then there's Chillax.
If your idea of mapping is "plagiarizing from other WADs and just cramming as many cyberdemons and archviles and revenants into one place as possible," it's the WAD for you.
Am I the only one that wants a second Chillax?

Gravity is also very similar in pallate. It's got some extremely large open spaces that give it an sort of uncanny feeling, even for Doom.

What program for mutiplayer doom would you recommend? Anyone want to play some custom wads too?
What program for mutiplayer doom would you recommend? Anyone want to play some custom wads too?
Zandronum fo' sho'.
I hear The Ultimate Torment and Torture is fun in co-op.
If we are doing co-op WADS then I prolly won't be using a mic because my voice is dumb, also my sound card is broke so generally everyone would have to type for full communication with everyone.
Are slaughter WADS fun in co-op? I'm curious. I tried with one other friend but we got wrecked, so it's probably better with more.
Zandronum fo' sho'.
Zandronum is the go-to easy one to set up with a lot of game modes.
However, I recommend (eventually) getting a multiplayer gzDoom launcher for the occasional rare wads that don't play nice with Zandronum.
All set up and ready to go.

P much. You have to have a weapon that causes auto pain stun and duck in and out, otherwise there's no fucking way you'll make it.
I'm currently planning on making something for GZDoom and I'm curious about all the useful tools one could have when working with it. I use Doom Builder for mapping and XWE for everything else.
Also if there is anybody here that has a bunch of experience with DECORATE, ACS or just anything doom modding releated and would like to help out with a thing or two I'd be more than happy to add you on steam or something :v:
If you're mapping for GZDoom you should get GZDoom Builder if you haven't already.
I also like SLADE3 more than XWE, you could try it out.
Wow, I can't believe I've never even heard of GZdoom Builder. I'm totally getting all over that right away.
Also I guess I'll be giving SLADE3 a try too. I've heard lots of good things about it and seems like a lot of people prefer it over XWE
XWE barely even works anymore.
Also thanks for showing me GZDoom Builder Combine. Surprised I never knew that was a thing.
SLADE3 is pretty good, I use it to tweak mods myself all the time.
I'm having two issues, not sure if they are just on Zandronum, my screenshots look fucked up, and brightmaps have some issues where it "leaks" into the map.

[t]http://puu.sh/9JCOW/c8454d0b6d.jpg[/t]
Oh, nevermind, I just found out that I switched a thing on and that was causing these issues.
What was it because I had this bug with Zandronum the other day and never found out what caused it, was in a co-op session so I just blanket turned off dynamic lights at the time
Options>Display>OpenGL>Shaders>Shaders for fog OFF
That did the trick for me.
Doom 64 run has started

I haven't forgotten about GMOTA, v0.9.1 is out now if you guys are interested
I've finally started playing Doom and Doom64, why the hell didn't I play these sooner? They both are ridiculously fun (and challenging too) and they both are really awesome
I have yet to play Doom 2 yet, but damn I already love the Doom series

Doom 2 will be a hell of a ride. The new weapons and enemies definitely freshen things up.
What sourceport ya using?

I'm playing on an Android port of Doom and playing Doom64.EXE on the PC
So apparently the Doom 4 reveal is going to be exclusively for Quakecon attendees.
That means this:

And no video recorders.
If someone's going to quakecon that has a notepad on them, please use it.

thats fucking dumb
No it isn't.
I don't understand why they would show it only for attendees, is it just to get more people to attend?
[editline]1st July 2014[/editline]
No it isn't.
It isn't dumb? Or it isn't only being shown to people attending?
It's going to end up just like L4D2: few people played Dark Carnival, at the time a totally new campaing that it didn't had no footage at the time. When people got a chance to play, some took some pics, recorded videos, showing the campaing and some stuff from L4D2 that wasn't show before, like the chainsaw in action
No it isn't.
If it's a private showing only for people attending, and not like what Nintendo did where they show it private and then show the reveal a little later in the same day, then yes it is dumb. The teaser trailer for Doom 4 specifically said to await the reveal at Quakecon and if that's private-only, then that's kind of a dick move.
They'll probably reveal it later.
