Try mucking about with the [url=http://zdoom.org/wiki/A_PlaySound]sound channel/slots[/url], it's probably what you want.
Yeah, I tried that as I posted, slapped it onto CHAN_AUTO and it works like a dream. Hopefully I won't need to tweak the fuck out anymore.

Actually, I think I don't have to do this at all. There are programs that convert binary format maps to UDMF.

I managed to convert my map to hexen format, but I can't convert them to UDMF. The only tool that does this is UDMFConvert, and I can't for the life of me figure out how it works.

That was Beyond Reality, I've accidently completed it like four times with Project MSX because I didn't notice that it loops until it was way too late.
