Hey Guys! Thanks for the kind words and encouragement! lekkimsm mentioned this thread, so I figured I'd swing by. Glad to hear that it's proving enjoyable for some of you. And I apologize for the rough spots!
What the fuck is this shit - I am surviving for 5 days, traveled to hidden lake and back, no fucker has the balls to attack me, got the pass to DMC and BAM. Marga wrath right infront of DMC gate. I try to hit it and miss every time, I try to run away and it finishes my athletic, strong and melee character in 3 hits. This is outright unfair
The Merga Wraith is serious bad mojo. It is a powerful being and usually destroys anything it encounters. That said, there are ways to avoid attracting it, ways to avoid it after it's following you, there are clues about why it follows you, and some enterprising players have even defeated it, reaping some interesting story rewards. I won't spoil the hows and whys here. And indeed, many hows and whys have yet to be written into the game. Story-writing is most definitely still in progress!

Your game is pretty good.
Oh dope, love it when dev's register here. Two questions: When are you hoping to have the next build out and how has neo been doing on the steam store?
Thanks! Re: the next build, I'm not exactly sure, but I'm thinking it'll likely be in a few weeks. I was planning on getting at least one new encounter into the next update, and that often takes a week or so. So far, I've been working on non-hostile NPCs and bug fixes first. If you're interested, I have a daily dev log here: http://bluebottlegames.com/main/ How has NEO Scavenger been doing on Steam? Surprisingly well, actually. It's not blockbuster status or anything (not showing in the big promotion block on top of the storefront), but it's still way better than my sales before Steam (personal site, Desura, IndieGameStand). And more to the point, the reception has been great. I was worried it might be forgettable (or worse, despised) by a larger audience. But so far, people seem to really like it! I think the homemade graphics and soft-sell marketing campaign keeps people's expectations fairly low, so they're pleasantly surprised by the depth of mechanics and content when they try it out :)
Still unarmed, a bandit with a rifle spotted me and I tried to run away, fell down, and when the bandit closed on me, he offered surrender, gave me everything he had, and ran away.
Just realized I have the top rated review on the game's steam page. Do I get a prize? :v

Went to sleep in a town, initiated an encounter with an unknown enemy while I was still sleeping. The encounter ended without anything actually happening, and when I woke up, someone left behind a backpack filled with water, food, and iPad, and a sleeping bag. No ammo though.

Your work ethic is very impressive and it is something I wish to emulate. Whenever I reach any bump in the road I always get distracted and stop what I'm doing for days on end. So how do you keep at it so well?
I sort of forgot about this game after I played the demo a year ago. Not that I thought it was bad, I had a blast but I guess I got distracted by other things. I'll definitely need to buy this when I get some cash.
Thanks for the kind words and encouragement! lekkimsm mentioned this thread, so I figured I'd swing by
Toploader, one of the devs of Postal 2, is having great success dropping by the Postal thread. He's loving it, the people posting in it is loving it, and he's getting some amazing feedback! I imagined you could get some interesting feedback from it too.
@Hamaflavian, you are having the most bizarre encounters. I think an NPC has adopted you or something.
Just realized I have the top rated review on the game's steam page. Do I get a prize? :v
Wow, you've been busy! Also, it's interesting that episode 2 is the top-ranked.
As you are someone who seems to be working on this almost entirely solo, how are you able to motivate yourself to work on development for so long, day after day? Quitting and making it a full-time job helped me stay on-track (partially because I only take breaks on weekends, so I don't lose track of what I'm doing). Not having any income during development was a big motivator, too :) Mostly, though, I realized that if I ever want to call the shots while working in the game industry, I'd need proof that my decisions are worth listening to. I interviewed for a few positions just before leaving BioWare, and the feeling I got was that I'd just be climbing the ladder again no matter where I went. The question I remember most is "so what games have you designed?" Until I could answer that with something other than "unfinished side projects," I wasn't going to evolve my career. There are definitely low points, and during those, it can be tempting to walk away. You just have to recognize when that's happening, flex your mental muscles, and put your brain back on track. It's not enjoyable nor easy, but it's worth it.
Toploader, one of the devs of Postal 2, is having great success dropping by the Postal thread. NEO Scavenger is definitely a much better game today because of feedback I've received!
its a fantastic game I recommend it to most of my friends
Are rifles still just fancy clubs?
Are rifles still just fancy clubs?
You COULD put rifle bullets in them, just to start of with? Unless you can put together some makeshift bullets out of hollowed out batteries, gunpowder and pebbles, then knock yourself out!
[t]http://i.imgur.com/2qDSabS.jpg[/t] (backpacks are modded slighty) I am really having a blast with this game! :v:
How'd you mod your backpack like that? I don't see any files I can change. Edit: Nevermind, I figured it out.
Also, did the likelihood of food being dropped change in a recent patch? It seems a lot scarcer than it used to be.
Are rifles still just fancy clubs?
Ammo is still pretty scarce, if that's what you mean. Depending on when the last time you played was, you may or may not have seen the junk market, which can make ammo a bit more accessible. But generally, bullets are precious and to be used sparingly.
Also, did the likelihood of food being dropped change in a recent patch? It seems a lot scarcer than it used to be.
I did tweak loot tables fairly recently, so that's possible. Though, I think this is a general toning-down of everything, which brings food with it. On the other hand, food should be plentiful if one targets their efforts on finding it. E.g. hunting deer/squirrel, using botany when scavenging woods/plains, berries in marshes, cannibalism And thanks, NoDachi!
I really enjoyed the Demo of the game, just one small thing...The game was freaking hard for me to learn something and I still have a lot of trouble getting food or a decent place to sleep
its supposed to be freaking hard you're supposed to die a lot while you're learning.
Yeah,I got that. But I just wished the Status Bars was more friendly and provied more info or some kind of in-game tutorial to teach us basic stuff.
Yeah,I got that. But I just wished the Status Bars was more friendly and provied more info or some kind of in-game tutorial to teach us basic stuff.
The status bars provide you only the basic information you need. You are either hungry, or not hungry. Your real life doesn't feature any stat-bars either. If you need much more information, the associated trait helps you alot. If you need to know more about your overall health, then make sure you sport the medic trait/trait. the Wikia says this about the medic skill: "Medic - Increases the rate of wound recovery and grants access to detailed conditions screen" And also gives you three more bars regarding your overall health. [editline]16th January 2014[/editline] You could also give this a glance if you're not gettin' anywhere: http://neoscavenger.wikia.com/wiki/Hints_and_Tips
Admittedly, the UI isn't very streamlined. However, what it lacks in efficiency, it hopefully makes up for in comprehensiveness. A good rule of thumb for the stat bars is this: Green = no worries Yellow = Nothing serious, but you should look into this soon. Red = Serious problem in need of immediate attention. Black = Critical failure. Could mean death or incapacitation at any moment. Also, each stat bar as a red/green arrow at the right side, indicating whether the most recent change was positive or negative. Finally, there's also a pair of temperature stat bars. One is your body temperature, and adheres to the rules above. The other is outdoor temperature, and is either blue (too cold outside for how you are dressed), red (too warm), or white (comfortable). Also, the message log at the bottom shows all important messages. So hunger, shivering, sickness, and other issues will be announced there. There isn't a guide nor tutorial yet, as the game is still changing fairly quickly. My first draft went out of date faster than I could keep up. So I'll probably revisit instruction manual/guide/tutorial investigation once development slows down. Hope this helps!
does anyone know if there are options for carrying water around other than shittons of bottles?
does anyone know if there are options for carrying water around other than shittons of bottles?
Does plastic bags work? I've never tried it myself.
I just bought this on steam, and I met my first melonheads. They are now stalking me. Send help. I'm scared.
I just bought this on steam, and I met my first melonheads. They are now stalking me. Send help. I'm scared.
Melonheads are like the weakest things in the game. You should make a sport of hunting them down, and going all whack-a-mole on them! :v:
But if you let one survive long enough to call for help, another melonhead appears, and then they both call for help, and then those four call for help, and then all you need to do is trip once and then you're kicked to death by fucking melonheads.
The game looks damn interesting. Bought it! Always glad to see the dev on FP as well.
My character right now. He eats any looters that visit him.
if i have the trapping skill and a sharp tool like a multitool or a meat cleaver, i should be able to carve off the faces of all the bandits I kill and then stitch them into a cloak that gives a massive morale penalty against any humanoid enemy that comes near me.
