Hey folks! Just a heads-up, NEO Scavenger's in the latest Humble Weekly Bundle: Celebrating Open Source! https://www.humblebundle.com/weekly The idea is for several of us devs to somehow give back to the open source tools that made our games possible. Hence, the charities in this bundle are for the Haxe Foundation, OpenFL, Ren'Py, and Flashdevelop. (Tools and engines we used and would like to see grow.) If you've been on the fence a while, this may be your chance :)

I still probably won't get it now (though I will eventually) but I'll recommend it to people I think might like it.
I played it, and this game just felt really unfair. Maybe I'm just bad at it, but... I'd fight off/close the door/hide from/etc. the dogman. Then I'd use [sp]eagle eyes if I have it to find the multitool[/sp]. Then I'd go outside, and I would normally just freeze to death because 90% of the time it is raining and I can never find any clothes. If I did, then I'd wander around hoping to dear god I'd find a backpack. Most of the time I didn't. I once [sp]stumbled upon a lab and tried to help fix some guy's nuclear sabre tooth tiger, but failed. Then I traded an amulet for a rifle. Didn't matter, because I walked outside and a magical black thing decided to appear out of the air and take five bullets without so much as a scratch, then it hit me in the stomach once and I died of brain hemorrhaging.[/sp] I get luck is a big factor, but come on. But, I was happy to get it in the bundle and support charity, so I hope others enjoy it more than me.

[sp] When you do, that wraith appears to follow you and fuck you up [/sp]

For one thing, you should normally find a car with a sleeping bag if you're hypothermic too early in the game (sort of a safety net). However, it's not very clear how to use the sleeping bag, as it must be on the ground or campsite to be effective. Carrying it doesn't have any effect. When on the ground or camp, though, it should pretty much warm up the player in any weather conditions. I need to find a way to communicate that to the player better, as I think you're not alone in having frequent hypothermia deaths.
Oh. Well, I noticed the car, and got the bag, but yeah, figuring out how to use it was weird. Also, its a pain to only be able to carry two things in the beginning. So I have to have that sleeping bag and hopefully a weapon. If not, well I'm fucked. And if I don't have a weapon, and have food or water instead, I'm fucked because some bandit will kill me faster than he already can.
Man, I was on the verge of starving to death until a deer came near me. I beat the fuck out of it with a crowbar and then butchered it with a shard of glass. Then I found a stranger, killed him and butchered him.

But then again, that's part of what makes containers such a cool piece of loot to find! Also, strategies differ from person-to-person, but I would make weapons a pretty low priority. Avoiding fights is usually better, and surviving one has less to do with the weapons used than the strategy, skills, and timing. E.g. attacking is a move used only rarely, when the enemy is fallen, stunned, or otherwise unable to attack you next turn. Instead, focus on defending until they're open to attack, or use special moves.
I think certain things could be better explained (I don't know how I didn't think about the plastic bag being a container :v:), but I enjoy the little that I've played so far. Keep up with the good work!
I was actually going to buy this on Steam the other day so I put some money in my Steam Wallet (5 bucks) and was going to pay the rest with the remaining money on my Paypal but then I realized it was like 20 cents too little and then I also found out that I could buy the humble bundle for 5 dollars. Fuck my life

Hey Folks! I've teamed up with some other indie and open source devs for a reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything): We are the game developers of Anodyne, Defender's Quest, Incredipede, and NEO Scavenger, and the developers of open-source game tools Haxe/OpenFL. Ask Us Anything. If you're interested, swing on by!
Okay I bought the Humble Weekly. This game is so cool.
I reached DMC but I'm still 1000$ short of getting the keycard since I failed the mission thing.

In this game I realized that if you want to be set forever than do one thing, choose botany at the beginning of the game and scavenge woods and plains. Other than that butchering the corpses of dog men give around 8 slabs of meat, 6 of which (roughly that) sell for 50 per slab at the junk market. [img_thumb]https://i.imgur.com/uzOx60O.jpg[/img_thumb] This run was my best, but I died because [sp]I got thrown down the chute at Zom Zom's, always choose the spectator option[/sp]
[sp]I got thrown down the chute at Zom Zom's, always choose the spectator option[/sp]
Speaking of this, what's the difference between [sp] choosing stock or spectator?[/sp] [editline]4th April 2014[/editline] Also, is it worth keeping pills in their bottles?
Speaking of this, what's the difference between [sp] choosing stock or spectator?[/sp] [editline]4th April 2014[/editline] Also, is it worth keeping pills in their bottles?
I keep pills in their bottles because they have 2 slots to hold pills, it is mostly just to save that -little- bit of space in your inventory. Also Stock [sp]Gets you put in as a contestant in the arena, and if you try to cheat they kill you, and I'm pretty sure you die or get injured if you try and leave.[/sp] Spectator [sp]Puts you in as a watcher, you eat some fresh meat (same with Stock) and then you get sick watching a man get torn apart and you leave in disgust. As a spectator you also have to trade in a luxury item to go in, such as a lighter or Corn-a-cola.[/sp]
Is this similar to cataclysm dark days ahead?
I keep them in bottles just so that I know what the pill does, like if the bottle is called "Painkiller", I know the pills in there will be painkillers even if they have a weird name.

The only reason to use the containers is if you don't have the skill it seems like to me.
Is this similar to cataclysm dark days ahead?
This game has a lot of roguelike mechanics (Turn based, Permadeath, Resource management, Random environment etc etc...) I've actually found very few enemies in my runs, minus the occasional looter, and for some reason I always get my ass handed to me by the DMC guards, but combat is also text based, and turn based. Overall for such an early state there's a lot to find, but there aren't enough special locations/missions to hold your interest if randomly wandering for loot isn't your thing. Hope that kind of answers your question.
Got this game and currently on my second playthrough everythings going great, got a gun with no ammo and a compound bow with some ammo. Running around killing scavengers Also how do I deal with diarrhea kinda hard when your fighting a guy and you start taking a crap in your pants. EDIT Oh crap my hunting rifle with strap and scope just broke. Luckily this guy im fighting has a crowbar and hes almost dead Edit God damn i fell asleep Edit Nevermind the guy i fought bled out Edit Oh what the hell i just up and died of poisoning
Goddamn it I keep dying from hypothermia because I never find anything else than junk in every building I scavenge
I'm getting such a bad luck in this game...3 playthroughs with weapons and such.suddenly a monster appear when I'm sleeping and BAM! I'm dead.
Goddamn it I keep dying from hypothermia because I never find anything else than junk in every building I scavenge
You can always [sp]skin the monster you fight at start and makr a cape out of it[/sp]
You can always [sp]skin the monster you fight at start and makr a cape out of it[/sp]
Oh, I never fight it, I only hide or run away, so I guess he's actually pretty easy?
