Development News Release No.2
Hello and greetings to everyone. Things have been a little quiet around the workshop as many of our team members have returned to school and are adjusting to their new schedules. Despite the seeming slow down in activity, we have managed to keep the wheels on the old war wagon moving forward. Here are just some of our more notable recent doings…
Two new pieces of kit have been added to the Commonwealth TO&E (images to come in the next update):
* PIAT
* Enfield No.2 Mk.I* revolver
Our first tank is officially in game and undergoing testing. We’re still a long ways from showing the beast off, but I know that I can speak for the rest of the team when I say it feels good to get the armoured combat portion of our development kicked off (and confirmed)!
The team recently welcomed two new additions to the crew:
* David Jones – 3D Artist, Portfolio: http://davidjones3d.weebly.com/
* Kaitlin Kirsch – 3D Artist, Portfolio: http://kaitlinkirsch.carbonmade.com/
And last, but not least, in community related news, a few of our forum members have helped the team out by providing us with reference images from their own WWII weapon and memorabilia collections. If you have ORIGINAL materials that you personally own, and would like to share, please feel free to send me a private message here on the boards. We’d love to see you what you’ve got, and hey, you’ll get a mention in the game’s credits!
Our apologies for the lack of recent updates. We will do our best to keep you all up to speed on a more consistent basis moving forward. Have a great week and we’ll be back next week with some new images from Festung Europa’s Work in Progress.
Can't wait to see the revolver and the PIAT, never used the PIAT in Darkest Hour before (didn't even know it was in it :v:) but for those that don't know what it is: it's an anti tank rifle.
I also loved charging up the ladders on Juno beach with the revolver while everyone is carefully moving up I'd just walk up the ladder and shoot at any Germans I'd see (I'd miss but they at least ducked)
Also Shurek confirmed that the tank they are testing is German so I can't wait to see that (hopefully coming with the images of the new weapons)
Can't fucken wait for this.
I'm looking forward to the velvet revolvers, hike up the mountains as Canadians like Bob told me.
anti tank rifle.
it's not an anti-tank rifle by any stretch of the imagination.
It's a spring powered explosive charge lobber.
I wonder if they're still going with the absolutely sense-of-humour-less attitude they had with the last one.
I wonder if they're still going with the absolutely sense-of-humour-less attitude they had with the last one.
How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love CryENGINE:
First of all, we’d like to thank all of you for your patience over these many months. While we have been relatively silent on the public relations front, behind the scenes there were some awfully big decisions going on and as a result a momentous change took place at JBG Central this past fall. Since we last posted on the blog, we have taken the rather large step of changing our production on Festung Europa from the UDK over to CryENGINE3. Definitely not a decision that was taken lightly, as you can well imagine, but after much testing and deliberation, it is one which we feel is best for the game, its chances at success, and the future of the franchise. One could certainly argue the finer points of this, but there is no denying that CryENGINE3 is an extremely powerful game engine; one that is on the cutting edge, and one which can render expansive real world environments and realistic physics behaviors. But game engines can only do so much; they are only the palette for the artist, not the painting. The creation of the game itself – the gameplay, the mechanics, the environments, and everything else you are expecting to see in FE are entirely up to us. We are happy to have this next generation set of tools at our finger tips, and even happier to accept the challenge of using them for FE’s development.
What does it all mean to you? Well, the obvious result will be much more immersive and visually appealing battlefields for you to play upon. Also, you can expect for the interactions between players, vehicles and other objects to be much more realistic. The next question that many of you are probably asking is, will I be able to run FE on my rig? Well, the answer to this is likely: if you have not updated your hardware since DH was first released in 2008, then it is probably time to do so. Most GPU’s and basic gaming rigs these days can run CryENGINE3 based games at playable frame rates using even medium settings. You can also be assured that we will do our best to optimize the game so that the widest possible amount of players can participate in the FE experience.
Next, I would like to make an appeal to all of you who have followed our progress over the years from DH to FE, as well as to those of you who are new to our community. As many of you can imagine, starting up a company and developing a game from the ground up offers a grueling, yet rewarding, set of challenges. We are still looking for talented people to join us in this venture and we urge you to not be shy, and at least take that next step by inquiring about how you can contribute to FE. If you would like to help, or know people who can, please visit our JOBS page at the JBG website. Remember, this is a standalone product, not a mod. Get in on the ground floor now! Help us create the WW2 game you’ve always wanted to play.
Thank you all for your support, and stay tuned to the blogs next weekend, when we begin highlighting in more detail some of the features to be included in Festung Europa. In the meantime, enjoy the first ever published images of the game, right here.
Forgot this trot
“What kind of game modes are planned?”
We are currently considering different types of missions and objectives taking place on the same terrain, rather than the more common “one-map-one-game-mode” type approach. Expect FE’s gameplay to encompass historic, real life military missions and objectives with scenarios designed to NOT play out the same way twice.
Also have a cool picture

I win again due to presentation
But seeing there are polish troops really has me excited, I can't wait till the kickstarter
guys isn't there like a law against making games this gud or something?
hype
If that was true then they should be making this in jail for making Darkest Hour :v:
Answering questions of the plebs, I win again trot
darkest hour's animations were crap, that's the only reason why they didn't go to jail
and bob's just jealous, don't mind him
I beat Trot this time

and some work in progress stuff
Full Body Awareness or FBA. The idea is that the player is operating an actual model (I can see my legs!) and not just a floating camera. The FBA system will add greatly to immersion and improve character interaction with the game environment and…well…other players! This will not only affect any kind of melee system, but also how player models interact with crew served weapons such as heavy machine guns (HMG), anti tank guns (ATG) and other equipment on the battlefield.
Part of the ongoing battle behind the scenes is churning out 3D assets – our modelers are constantly working on items intended for the frontlines: weapons, equipment, vehicles and environmental props. I would like to highlight the following ongoing works:
- The German Karabiner 98k rifle together with its bayonet is currently being modeled.
- The Lee Enfield No.4 rifle and the Sten Mk II SMG are undergoing a major overhaul due to community feedback over concerns of historical accuracy.
- Both the Sherman and Panzer IV tanks in their appropriate marks are in an advanced state of production.
I just suggest going through the whole article.

Yep. That's a beach.
This looks fucking amazing already. Visually at least. It'll be a while before we see a gameplay video I bet. Still, I had no idea this was in the making.
dat camo
We want players to organize into squads and look out for each other and conserve their most important pieces of equipment. We will also pay close attention to Command & Control, giving each leader along the chain of command the appropriate contemporary tools to get the job done! These will range from interactive area maps and voice commands to military hand signals of the era.
HAND SIGNALS!?
New Update!!!!!! and it's pretty awesome
June 6 – Start of Operation Overlord 2013
[t]http://www.festungeuropagame.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/D-DayMROPOverlord2013.jpg[/t]
On this day sixty-nine years ago, on D-Day June 6, the combined Allied Forces undertook the biggest sea to land invasion in history as part of Operation Overlord, the invasion of Normandy. Commonwealth Forces consisting of British and Canadian forces landed at the Gold, Juno, and Sword beaches facing staunch German defences, as everywhere Allied Forces ran from the start into a dogged, but ultimately doomed German resistance. The initial landings were successful, the beachheads would soon become consolidated, strengthened, and filled with men and material for their breakout. However, despite these early successes, vital Day 1 objectives couldn’t be reached, most importantly the city of Caen – the key to the Falaise lowlands. Although it soon became clear that the Germans where in no position to throw the Allied Forces back into the sea, they made the best out of it and prepared a resiliant and in-depth defensive strategy. Thus D-Day would be a forebearer of much bloodier things to come on the long way to breaching the Fortress that was Europe…

The battles are long over and now, sixty-nine years later, we find that all the right technical and personnel preconditions have made it possible for an international group of people to pay hommage to this great conflict. Jackboot Games is the right group of people at the right place at the right time – we will make Festung Europa the best World War 2 FPS we can! Since the last time we took stock, we found that a significant number of members on the development team have substantial military experience from being former, current or reserve service personnel in their respective countries. This is, of course, no qualification for game development in itself, but it does mean we have the utmost respect for the history, the conflict and the soldiers on all sides involved in it. We’ve said it before: do expect us to be as historically accurate as possible without making the game tedious or turning it into a simulation!
[t]http://www.festungeuropagame.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/D-DayMRPanzersAttacking.jpg[/t]
This is where we ask for your help. But what can you do?
You can help us by Liking, Linking, Retweeting, Sharing our messages and Talking about Festung Europa with your friends and fellow gamers…but most important of all: Talk to us! Get involved, comment on Facebook, Twitter and the Community Forum! A good start would be to participate in our
“What are you looking forward to the most in Festung Europa?” thread!
Another good way to let us know what you think is to participate in the polls, let us know what your opinion is and why! Also we will soon start a new poll: “Which one of these Darkest Hour Maps would you like to see make a comeback in Festung Europa?” Please take your time and participate!
Let this June 6 be the start of Operation Overlord 2013, the combined effort by Jackboot Games and YOU the Community, putting Festung Europa on the road to victory!
So – what’s new?
German Player Models
[t]http://www.festungeuropagame.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/D-DayMRPlayerModels.jpg[/t]
Here’s an example of German troop variation in Festung Europa. The soldiers are wearing the Pea Dot 44 Pattern type camouflage typical of field uniforms worn by certain Waffen-SS units in Normandy ’44. Since there was no actual universal style of the Pea Dot 44 Pattern, the shade of the camo or the pattern sizes varied depending on which fabrication company made the pattern being worn.
Gewehr K98
[t]http://www.festungeuropagame.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/K98.jpg[/t]
The Karabiner 98 Kurz, or K98, was the standard battle rifle of the German soldier during World War 2. Based on the famous and often copied Mauser bolting system of its predecessor, the K98 was a rifle known for being a very dependable and accurate weapon. However, the K98 was already facing its own obsolescence at the begining of World War 2. Holding only 5 rounds in an internal magazine was disadvantageous compared to rifles with bigger magazines like the British Lee-Enfield No.4 holding 10 rounds or semi-automatic battle rifles such as the American M1 Garand. Attachments included the bayonet for all riflemen, a Schiessbecher for firing 30mm rifle grenades and of course various scopes and telescopic sights. Models found having above average precision after production or in the field where designated for the marksman or sniper role, the most common scope used was the 4x Zeiss ZF42 telescopic sight. Nearly 15 Million K98s where produced over a ten-years period up until the very last days of World War 2. The K98 remains in service with Germany’s armed forces to this day as a ceremonial weapon.
[t]http://www.festungeuropagame.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/K98Closeup02.jpg[/t] [t]http://www.festungeuropagame.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/K98Closeup01.jpg[/t]
Lee-Enfield No.4
[t]http://www.festungeuropagame.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/DDayOrderoftheDay-633x1024.jpg[/t]
In this part of the Media Release, we wanted to present the Lee-Enfield No.4 after its extensive overhaul due to FE community feedback – Unfortunatley, our responsible modeller has been called up as a national reserve and is busy hurling sandbags and combating the extreme flooding that is currently happening in Central Europe. Our best wishes go to “Gunny” r0tzbua! Keep it up and stay safe!
There are a couple more infantry weapons and pieces of equipment coming your way soon!
Again we received several questions regarding the game and our design choices!
We would like to take the opportunity and answer some of your questions in
Operation: Questions and Answers #2:
[t]http://www.festungeuropagame.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Operation.jpg[/t]
QUESTION NO.1
“Is there going to be a HUD?”
Yes, there is going to be a HUD. However we want to make it as less distracting and obstructing as possible. There is an ongoing thread in the forums on this topic – since the HUD is not finalized yet, take a look and have your say in the matter!
QUESTION NO. 2
“Will there be different seasons, or is this going to be a summer only game?”
Since Festung Europa will initially be taking place in the summer of 1944, the enviroment will be set in summer time and there will be no seasonal changes. As the game might possibly be expanding in the future though, we might very well see fall or winter scenarios in the future!
QUESTION NO. 3
“How about day and night cycles?”
We are looking at several ways to increase randomisation and replayability of maps and scenarios. This includes different daylight settings for individual maps. What we are not going to have are real time day/night cycles though. In other words a map is probably set in a fixed state of light, but a map may be played as a day or night scenario!
QUESTION NO. 4
“Will there be flare guns/signal pistols?”
We are certainly considering them! They have their uses with historic and current militaries for signalling during daylight, so they would not necessarily be a night setting only asset.
QUESTION NO. 5
“You said ‘no perks, no unlocks’. Really? What about scopes and other attachments?”
There will be sensible attachments like these of course, but they will be exclusively available to certain classes/roles instead of having to be unlocked by the player. Attachments would include bayonet (all rifleman), scopes (sniper/marksman), or rifle grenade launchers (grenadier). There won’t be any unrealistic, fantasy, or prototype kinds of attachments or equipment in the game.
This concludes our June 6 Media Release – stay tuned for future updates, as bigger things lay in wait for us all!
That's a nice model but the render doesn't really mean anything unless it's against a background or with other things :v:
That's a nice model but the render doesn't really mean anything unless it's against a background or with other things :v:
Meh, even in my picture with the render it looks really nice
Added another picture of it which I forgot to add
Really can't wait for this; now that we have the Eastern Front and Pacific Front out in RO2, I can't wait for this.
The concept art looks kind of like photoshopped picture from some WWII movie.
Wow a fucking WW2 game with the commonwealth in it.
[editline]7th June 2013[/editline]
Will it have the same kind of voice acting as tripwire does? I like the death sounds.
I wonder how the Brits will sound
"cor blimey m8 u just shot me in the friggin bollocks you bloody jerry tosser"
just what we need: another ww2 game
oh well. here's to hoping they don't make it horrible like most ww2 games
hell, for realism the brits can all carry bugles and bagpipes as their primary weapon

you know what i never understood?
why do you need concept art for a ww2 game or any historical game for that matter outside of scenery
