any of you know a game or two which has the same type of gameplay as the first Amnesia and the Penumbra games? love those games so much and would love to play more of its kind. shame A Machine For Pigs ended up like it did
Probably obvious but Outlast.
Man I remember Condemned 2, it was probably the first game I played that had spooky moving mannequins But it was pretty fun if my memory serves me right, and there's a pretty fun part for all of you nature lovers out there, people that've played it know what I'm referring to.
I remember playing Silent Hill when it was new. Even though it was more so to hide pop in, the fog that was everywhere did a good job of making you feel uneasy. Yeah, the radio makes static when a monster is near(not really a spoiler as you learn such in the first 10 minutes of the game), but there was, at the time, a feeling that you'd stumble on to something that you couldn't get a heads up on. The whole fact that the main character was just an everyday Joe Schmoo and therefore was not very combat capable was a neat change up.
Neat touch/possible spoiler: [sp]I think it only worked on the flying things, but if you hit them in the back with a downward swing with either the Steel Pipe or the Emergency Hammer, you would break their backs, causing them to crawl in pain after you. If you were trying for a low kill count, this was useful.[/sp]
Any horror game that doesn't give you a weapon, in my opinion, is the scariest game.

IMO It's scarier when they give you a weapon, but one that gets more and more useless as the game goes on and forces you to rely on your wits more than your aim in the end. That kind of "what you know isn't good enough anymore" is what gets to me the most.
I have yet to run into a game that does that.
Dead Space was intense and all, but I got to the point where I just to one weapon because it was satisfying to cut up something scary.
I have yet to as well. :v:
It'd be nice if someone did that, though.
Oh and also,

Siren 1
Although it is an unforgiving stealth game to begin with but even if you mastered the combat mechanics the enemys are still unkillable in that game.
And dont even bother with Blood curse, that thing falls flat on its face in every single sense of the word

You can't forget this in the list of upcoming games. It looks pretty good.

The Twin Peaks atmosphere was really good, but I wouldn't call it a horror game.
Loved Condemned 1. Enjoyed the atmosphere and how unsettling it was to go through anywhere. No place ever felt safe. There was like one jump scare, two if you count the mannequins in the mall. Everything just felt off in a weird sense, which just added to the atmosphere, especially the last level.
Condemned 2 took a more paranormal path than the first, and became a bit more action focused.
Has anyone played DreadOut?
Has anyone played DreadOut?
You'd like it if you generally enjoy things like the Fatal Frame series. It has a few number bugs though, and it's continue system is pretty dumb too.

Also, I just got done playing ZombiU on the WiiU, that game is ridiculously underrated. A lot of people regard it as garbage for some reason and I'm thinking it was maybe to do with the fact that it was kind of disappointing launch title/console seller.
The survival in that game is pretty awesome, you're pretty much doing everything you can to make sure you alone survive. It's not about seeing the gnarly effects when you blow a zombie's head off or getting huge weapons and that's what I like about it, it's different.
It's definitely by no means a 10/10. There's a lot of problems such as it's continue system too (re-start with another survivor really?) and the sound production isn't all that great either, but it's like £10 or even £7 in some places and I definitely urge you to check it out if you have a wii-u.

that monster will be in a wheelchair for the rest of its life now
[sp]and if Cry of Fear were smart it would have had that[/sp]

A very good game, it spooked me the first time I ever played it (didn't like playing at night).
Might not be very scary, but a very good story and game imo.
If youre looking for a creepy and free game, try iamscared. Id like to describe the game, but that would spoil some of the surprises.
Oh man Condemned 1 was the shit, I wish more games adapted it's combat.
Guns were super scarce and only had a few bullets, but the enemies died at like 1-2 shots. And the melee felt like the hits actually connected.
For its time it was an amazing game.
[sp]The serial killers' house was so fucking eerie.[/sp]

Sort of reminds me of the Matrix movies, especially that circular corridor he walks into after the wall breaks apart looking a lot like the machine city in Revolutions. I genuinely want to try this game, really hoping a free demo is released soon.
SOMA looks really good. Nice break from their brick and castle wall interiors with scarce lighting and back into cement walls with scarce lighting.
There really has been a lack of good horror games for me. I honestly thought The Forest would be a pretty good spook, but it's been kinda lacking.
in my opinion, only Frictional Games have managed to make good horror games in the past years. I can't recall playing a good horror game that was made in the past few years other than Outlast. even Outlast became kind of dull. quickly evolved into "hide in locker" or "here's a locker, someone is gonna patrol here".
If you want a really good atmosphere, play Viscera Cleanup Detail. The anticipation of something happening while you have nothing but a mop is great. The atmosphere is just great in that game. The stillness of everything, the blood and gore everywhere telling a story of something really bad that JUST happened and now you're all alone to clean up it. The sounds are great too. You'll hear things in the back ground, like a clunk or a low roar. It had me shitting my pants. I would bump into a box and hear it fall over and jump like fuck. I started seeing things out of the corner of my eyes and even started matrixing. It was probably the most scared playing a video game, and I dont really get scared by games, and a lot of my favorite games are survival horror games. Its only $10 on steam.
Dont read this if you want it ruined for you
[sp] unfortunately it looses a bit of the tension when you realize nothing really happens. Its great for the first few levels but then as it hits you that you really are pretty safe and you can just clean at your leisure, at which point it becames a lot more of a comedy as you clean up blood and body parts with no regards to the fact that they used to be a human. At that point it became a game to play while I watch youtube videos or listen to podcasts. I'm hoping that as they develop it more, the secretly add in things that will happen without saying anything so that when something DOES happen, its just when you started feeling safe.[/sp]

You are obviously very easily scared, because Viscera Clean-up Detail is meant to be comedic.
I mean, I am far from fearless, but I could name plenty of scarier games without even thinking about it.
One of my favorite "horror" games is actually Metro 2033, not because it is scary (there are a few creepy sections and a lot of the deserted tunnels are eerie, but otherwise it isn't that scary) but because there was a sense of dread that pervaded the very atmosphere of the game. The whole time I played I just had this feeling of hopelessness: humanity fucked up, we are destroying what is left, and there isn't a damn thing you can do about it. Last Light was far more hopeful, but 2033 really put the whole "nuclear apocalypse" thing into perspective.
Essentially, it is the same feeling you get watching The Road (or reading the book). The feeling that Earth, all we have ever really known, is dying, and we as a species are going with it.
Are there any reccomended horror games like Silent Hill or Corpse Party, with that wierd supernatural psychological kind of horror? I really love it, and I've still got plenty of SH to play (I've only just started in on the third game after finishing the first two, SH1 twice), But I'd love to know some more games similar to it. is Siren at all like what I'm looking for?
I don't think The Last of Us was a horror game really, but it had some really tense and amazing atmospheres. Atmospheres which made you feel apart of the apocalypse rather than the hero of the apocalypse.

Well obviously it's comedic, but it's also extremely atmospheric and that's what gets me. I don't get scared by most games because as long as I know that I have a weapon and can fight back, or that when I die I'll just restart at a checkpoint they lose all tension. Jump scares will sometimes startle me, but startling is not scaring. The things that scared me in viscera cleanup detail were the atmosphere and the fact that I had no idea what would happen to me. Once I knew nothing would, and I found more of the text logs, it ceased being scary.
I would also say last light is a bit bleaker considering artyom basically destroyed the final hope humanity had of survival, and even though there is the hope of the darks ones locked up in d6, they can very easily turn their back on humanity (I don't think they've said which ending is canon)

Definitely but i would recommend Siren 2 more as it has far more trippy stuff going on, especially some of its monster designs later on.
Although since you're american you have better luck getting it through emulation, since it was only released in EU and Japan.

Oh you were serious. I thought you were writing a satirical post or something.
the stalker series manages the great atmosphere thing and also pulls off some horror in certain parts of the game.

And I really like STALKER. It doesnt scare me for the reasons I said earlier, but they're still some of my favorite games.
I think I probably should have mentioned that I went into Viscera Cleanup Detail know almost nothing about it, only it was a tongue-in-cheek space janitor sim, and then I found out that while it was still that, it was still extremely atmospheric and I didnt know if there were still monsters in it or if I even could die. It made things tense and scared me. Its less scarey now that I know more about how the game works, but it still has a great atmosphere.

Different people find different things scary, dont know why I'm having to explain myself so much.
