in my opinion, only Frictional Games have managed to make good horror games in the past years. I can't recall playing a good horror game that was made in the past few years other than Outlast. even Outlast became kind of dull. quickly evolved into "hide in locker" or "here's a locker, someone is gonna patrol here".
honestly i think Frictional's games are kind of overrated in a few aspects. the atmosphere and the aesthetic is always there and it's fairly good, but their games just don't have a very scary design to them, if you get what i mean. i always got the impression that the extent of their thought into the game design was "you don't have weapons, you're being chased, be scared." i mean you look at something like Silent Hill and it's clear that every aspect of it was engineered specifically to unnerve you, with the camera angles being slightly askew and randomly taking nauseating shifts in position, the clunky combat and movement, disorientating filters forcing your brain to fill in the blanks, and the complete lack of any HUD all putting your teeth on edge.
it's got a lot of thought put into it that doesn't really apply to something like Amnesia. all the atmosphere ever culminates into is you opening a door, then you getting chased, in as visually and contextually dull a way as is possible. you're just running. i mean fair do's if you're scared of that kind of thing, but i would definitely be lying if i said i liked this approach to horror games.
I just finished silent hill 4 with my mate last night, it was alright, pretty scary at times but I fucking hate that the game essentially turns into an escort mission for the second half of the game, what were they thinking?
One of my favorite "horror" games is actually Metro 2033, not because it is scary (there are a few creepy sections and a lot of the deserted tunnels are eerie, but otherwise it isn't that scary) but because there was a sense of dread that pervaded the very atmosphere of the game. The whole time I played I just had this feeling of hopelessness: humanity fucked up, we are destroying what is left, and there isn't a damn thing you can do about it. Last Light was far more hopeful, but 2033 really put the whole "nuclear apocalypse" thing into perspective.
Essentially, it is the same feeling you get watching The Road (or reading the book). The feeling that Earth, all we have ever really known, is dying, and we as a species are going with it.
The whole "seenging pipez" thing really killed it, but that part in 2033 when you're following Khan and he's all "so yeah, the nuclear apocalypse destroyed heaven and hell too, so all the dead souls just get trapped in the metro forever", then you get prompted to crouch down and listen to a pipe, and it [sp]screams at you[/sp] actually made me spaz out and knock my mouse off my desk first time.
The only part that really unsettled me in either game was a side room in Last Light were the farther and farther you went in, shadows started appearing in your peripheral and whispers started to be heard, and the shadows continued to get clearer and the whispers got louder until you reached the back of the room and the shadows materialized and the whispers reach a crescendo, and then everything just goes away.

and the biomass, because it brought back memories of encountering the Master when I was younger
There is something really enjoyable about a game that ostensibly is not scary at all, until you find that one little hidden area that is just full of pants-shitting nightmare fuel. There have been some games that did it really well, placing it at the right point in the game with the right atmosphere and the right cues, that leave you constantly on edge for the rest of the game even though it is never seen again.
Also, its not a horror game on the level of like Amensia, more like F.E.A.R., but State of Decay is actually really unnerving. I think because it does a lot more to actually create a feel of survival in a completely devastated world, you actually get much more immersed.
The early game is frightening because you're thrown in to this world where there are hordes of monsters that can easily rip you apart, you don't have good equipment or skills, there is little other signs of life, and you have no idea what to do. And the nights make it even worse no matter how far along you are because of just how dark they are. Its always terrifying to be out running around and you just hear the unnatural moans in the distance, never sure what may be waiting inside the next house or off the next road or just laying on the ground waiting for you. The mid to late game isn't really so bad because you've got your base and you've got people who are trained and skilled and well equipped, you've got other groups of survivors to work with and things are just generally going well.
Then you get that moment in the late game where you open your map and are looking around for a building to raid to replenish your resources a bit and all you see are just black X's everywhere, almost every building already cleared out. Then it brings that fear from the early game right back; not only are there tons of monsters out there, but there are more of them and they've gotten bigger and more aggressive. And the resources that have given you a relatively comfortable survival up until now are gone, its a struggle to replace them and you know that every time you do, you're that much closer to be completely out.
I don't like games that make everything dark as shit
It doesn't scare me, it just makes even doing the most basic things frustrating

Bloody plaster-splicers in Bioshock.
Underrated Gem that got pretty nice and close to Lovecraft's charm

I can't play past the part where you are on the ship and have to shoot the blue things with the cannon because I can't see them thanks to Windows Eight...
Bloody plaster-splicers in Bioshock.
You know, weirdly enough, the plaster-splicers never really scared me in bioshock; surprised me yeah, but never scared me.
The spider and houdini splicers however scared me shitless; especially when you first encounter both. One more part I want to mention but I don't know how to do spoiler tags.
EDIT:
Not sure if it counts as a spoiler, but for me it was enjoyable to find it because of creepy factor:
[SP] One of the freakiest parts for me was definitely when you find that splicer singing "Jesus loves me" in the garden I think; I had no ammo, little health and eve and that creeped me the fuck out[/SP]
I dunno if anyone's mentioned it yet but deadly premonition does not belong in the OP of a horror games thread. Nothing in that entire game is scary.

let's be careful here. Bioshock and Spoiler tags spread more than the Common Cold.

a small part of the ending is really fucked up and grotesque tbh
Alright, half way through 'Among the sleep' and I can definitely recommend it; it is creepy as all fuck.

That flooded basement with no lights and a bunch of mannequins standing around. NOPE.
I bought FEAR + Expansions during the sale and it's nowhere as scary as I remember it to be.
The combat is great, but I was more annoyed as the *2spooky* parts than anything else.
After a while you can just tell when the next cryptic vision is going to occur, especially when you see a long hallway.
Other than that the game is pretty damn great.
Also, Alma is a bipolar bitch. Sometimes she wants to kill you, sometimes she wants to help you.

Also, the story makes zero sense.

And that one fat dude is just an annoying cunt, how has he able to survive a gunshot and a nuke in Extraction?
He felt super out of place as a stereotypical comic relief.

I've played a lot of horror games or mods, and if i may say it, i'm not easily scared. Actually i rarely get scared but i play these games because i like the athmosphere and the story. But there is this one game, that i played many years a go and managed to give me quite the scare.

Its name is Fatal Frame and i recommend anyone to try and play it, even if it aged a bit.

What killed the tension for me was the fact that the super spooky breaks in between gun fights were practically harmless, save for a few.
But the shooting was great and it's still a good game.

I do recommend the 2nd one the most.

I hear Amnesia is good but I don't have the money for it.

Both Amnesias are very good, but the two of them are very different games.
A Machine for Pigs is the "Gone Home" Amnesia, with a heavy story focus. It's still scary, but once you beat it once, that's it.
anyone here play damned?
if so, has it gotten any better in the last few patches? i haven't played in a few months.
Outlast was scary for like 15 minutes

As much as I like TLOU, it's not a scary game.

I'm more surprised by the fact that apparently whoever recorded the clickers did so without any audio manipulation, like that's impressive.

I strongly disagree with you, it's not scary at all. There are a few jump scares, like 5. After the first 2 it didn't scare me anymore. There was 1 part that actually scared me, that was when I had played for 1 hour with nothing and then I heard the sound of squealing pigs, too bad nothing actually happend. Played for 1 hour more and the game ended. The trailer made it seem scary, like you had to hide from monsters and run from them. Truth is, you see 1 monster. It walks around, it's not hard to get past. The rest is just scripted stuff like aww baww duh monstahs are cuming u betr run!!!!!!!!!! when you can easily figure out it's about to happen.
Outlast was scary for like 15 minutes
Outlast is one of the few games I've gotten immersed in, scared me a lot.
I've got a thing with horror games that I never have interest on them but I love those creepy moments in games that aren't really horror games. For example, the swamp mission on Halo, 343 Guilty Spark, scared me so much when I was playing at the time (I was about 11 years old) that I actually stopped playing the game and didn't play until next day :v:
Also, I didn't knew that Paranoia, a HL1 mod, was horror based. When the horror kicked in, I got scared, but unfortunately it didn't last long for me. I think it was more scary at the beginning since [sp]you lose all your weapons and get trapped on this really fucking creepy area with dead bodies[/sp]
One thing tho, the opengl32.dll that this mod injects can get you VAC banned iirc, so look out for that.
Anyway, anyone knows more examples like this? I love hearing about them so I can check it out myself when I get the chance.
You'd like it if you generally enjoy things like the Fatal Frame series. It has a few number bugs though, and it's continue system is pretty dumb too.
[editline]23rd June 2014[/editline]
Also, I just got done playing ZombiU on the WiiU, that game is ridiculously underrated. A lot of people regard it as garbage for some reason and I'm thinking it was maybe to do with the fact that it was kind of disappointing launch title/console seller.
The survival in that game is pretty awesome, you're pretty much doing everything you can to make sure you alone survive. It's not about seeing the gnarly effects when you blow a zombie's head off or getting huge weapons and that's what I like about it, it's different.
It's definitely by no means a 10/10. There's a lot of problems such as it's continue system too (re-start with another survivor really?) and the sound production isn't all that great either, but it's like £10 or even £7 in some places and I definitely urge you to check it out if you have a wii-u.
It's underrated because I'm not buying a fucking WiiU to play it.
Give me ZombiePC and you've got a deal.
Also I feel like I'm the only one that thinks DreadOut is a really shitty game.

F.E.A.R. 1/2 and Condemned 1, maybe 2. It's been a long time since I've played C2 so I'm not sure.
