2 is a separate story from 1 and 3, as is 4 and onwards. Just play 2 and you're good to go, 3 is the sequel to 1 in terms of story, but it's not like it's essential to play 1 to understand the story.

2 and 4 are stand-alone stories, but 3 is a sequel to 1. I like the first one the best ,but a lot of people prefer the second. The first is extremely cryptic with it's puzzles though, so that might turn you off from it.
i personally find 3 the scariest but that could just be me
