This is always happening to me. I find a group of animals I can tame. Tab out to see what I need, tab back in to find each and every animal dead and a group of friendly NPCs standing and staring at me.
I was watching a let's play and the dude playing ran up and started just quietly observing this cute dog when all of a sudden 2 friendly NPCs just came out of nowhere and just beat the shit out of the poor dog in front of him

reminds me of the time I was being chased by some giant rock motherfucker and I ran into a group of alpacas, causing the giant to switch targets and beat the living shit out of them.

afaik it's a permanent buff + rare reward from killing bosses, it increases your max MP slightly(?)
The best time to have NPCs around is when they come to fight bosses with you. I was fighting a human boss and some of my fellow Undead cronies came to support me.

If you have uTorrent or BitTorrent you can do this:
Options > Prefences > Connection
Then change the "Port used for incoming connections:" to what port you need to be opened, in this case; 12345.
This works with any games that require port forwarding, however to my knowledge you have to apply this port change before starting a server, and not during.
I didnt say this is how you port forward, it is a different method if you are unable to in normal means

How to port forward:
- Open the command prompt, type "ipconfig" without the quotes
- Whatever displays under the ipv4 address is how you log into your routers settings
- type that address into your web browser's address bar, i.e. xxx.xx.x.x
- Log in, the default credentials are usually "admin" for the username and "password" for the password field.
- find port forwarding/triggering and enter your information, make sure for the "server" address you use the same address as your ipv4 info.
The rest should be self explanatory.
