Really simply communicating would be acceptable for the majority of us. Simply tell us what he's working on every couple days or so. Not simply failing to even exist for months at a time.
well he does exist when hes going on vacation of some sort.
did wollay skedaddle with the money or something
There's no telling really. During development, he would go four to five months without info and people would just assume it was dead. Whether he is or isn't though, doesn't change that he's handled the whole project pretty poorly in terms of connecting with the playerbase.
He's said Cube World is just a side project of his, and he has made it clear that it's not very high on his priority list and truly doesn't treat it in a business perspective. Even after the release and through all the hype, it must just still be a small hobby to him.
...or maybe he took the money and ran, who knows?

If I recall correctly, he quit his job a long time ago to work on CubeWorld.

Yeah I'm just kind of looking towards that Starbound game now.
Dude just needs to release the source code or something. I don't know what he thinks he's accomplishing by not letting people make more intrusive mods, and then doing nothing himself.

He'd be a fool to not, given the potential it has.

I think it is because game devs don't like to feel like they are being replaced. They want to feel secure in there job and letting your fans make better content than you can make you feel obsolete.

Maybe some, but personally i'd love it if people modded stuff i made. (i'm programmer/game dev)
im with DJ on that, im not the most artisticly talented but i could probably grind out a texture map for a game to use. i'd always be happy to see a prettier one. wouldn't feel obsolete either, cause only I know how to not mess up my own game's code. and no one else. if i had a game that is.
Cubescam was a good game, A+

Fans will almost always make better content because there's more of them, plus it's a labour of love instead of a job. It's why Farm Sim is more fun than real farming. And if you're having fun doing a task you'll do a better job than if you're doing it because you feel you have to.

This was always the thing with me I love modding and when I was still in school I was advised to try and get into getting a job as a game dev but the idea of doing such a thing as a job would kill the fun for me. I only mod because I find it fun I don't even play the games I tend to mod for these days I simply enjoy making things for them. If I ever become a legit game dev it will be by accident making something for fun and then I can be a indie dev happy with my own project.
What the hell is going on with the game? I have been skimming over the thread but am still not sure.

Nothing. That's all you need to know really.
Of course if you go on the (unofficial) Cube World forums and rant about it, they act like you're crucifying Jesus.
Which is kind of ironic because the reason the official forums aren't being used is because they went down some time ago and Wollay just can't be arsed to even fix his own website.
Do people still play this?
Do people still play this?
with the leveling system still being buggy and broken, and some enemies being wayyy too OP even for hacked characters. and limited skill selections and specs where 1/3 of em aren't as good as the others. theres no point.
Wow. Forums are still down after 2 months.
For the time being I'm hoping Wollay is some sort of savant hermit and that's why he doesn't communicate much and he's still working on the game
Wow. Forums are still down after 2 months.
It's honestly like he's trying to kill it at this point.

Wollay turned them down so people wouldnt speak about the lack of updates
but seriously this is starting to look like a massive scam
starting to look like a massive scam
tbh he worked on it for a good 2 or 3 years before this, I don't think it's a scam. I think this is just how he operates. I'm fine with it because I knew he wouldn't be updating very quickly.
BABY (wollay) COME BACK
YOU CAN BLAME IT
ALL
ON
ME

You should probably blame it on me instead.
i blame it on the DDoS attackers. yeah its over but still. BLAME!
You're blaming it on the wrong thing, as you said, it's over, why should it still affect anything?
Wollay turned them down so people wouldnt speak about the lack of updates

so this guy right
this guy who's worked on this game for nearly 4 years
and has never maintained strong communication with his community
this guy right
releases an extremely polished, fun alpha of his game after 4 years of work
and then runs off with the alpha pre-order money
and you're basing this on the fact that he's not communicating with his community (something he's never done in his 4 or so years developing the game)
you're a smart one

Updating quickly isn't the issue. It's Wollay dropping off the face of the planet for months at a time leaving people who paid him money for his game completely in the dark wondering if he's dead/dropped development entirely or is actually working on the game.
It also makes it pretty hard to take him seriously in the future for any other games he may develop. People will be extremely hesitant to buy anything from him again for fear of the same thing happening.
As others I'm kinda sad about it. I was really dedicated fully to it with hosting servers etc.
Damn it! It was the first game in so long that I actually played 24/7 and had fun. I'm constantly thinking about what kind of games I could host servers for..
Shame.

I meant in the sense of giving everybody an update.
I was used to it from before. He's one of those devs that you don't hear from in a long time, and then all of the sudden he adds something big or does something cool.

Oh, I misunderstood you then. I thought you meant updating the game itself. A lot of us aren't fine with him not updating us because now that there is some release he's getting money from people who supported his game. It's not really entitled to feel like his idea of communication should have changed when he released the game, not that it's even asking much anyways. It takes a minute or two at most to send a tweet about what he's currently working on.
