Heh, I just found the video that got me to dig up my DvD and finally play SoC.

I was blown away (heh) by the atmosphere in that (then) foreign game, and it caused me to look into the series more.
I actually tried SoC at a friends house back around when it came out (he got it for free with his computer) in MP and I thought it was really cool so I got my dad to buy it. I was younger then though, and I got up to right before Agroprom and couldn't do it so I gave up, and forgot about the game completely.
Then last year this video led me to investigating the stalker games and the eventual digging up of SoC, playing on Master, and falling in love when I got into Agroprom and encountered the first Bloodsucker.
It's so weird that Atmospheric games are always the ones I love most, and yet for so much time one of the best just passed me by.
I hate how the video is named "MISERY Blowout"
Really hate it.

similar to me kinda except I was scared when it came to dark underground areas in games (I was a massive pussy back then)
So I stopped at Agroprom underground and started Call of Pripyat, and I got up to X8 and stopped and started Clear Sky, then I got up to the Red Forest and stopped.
Eventually I hardened the fuck up and stopped being a pussy and got my shit together.
the creator of that vid acknowledges that the blowout is from atmosfear at least

Same thing happened to me with FEAR, but STALKER was a bit different because I couldn't get past the bandit ambush in the garbage, right before you transition to Agroprom.
Speaking of scary games in general, I fucking HATE how over the web looking up STALKER sometimes I see people talking about it on general forums and there's always a couple of people that go "Stalker isn't scary at all, games like doom 3 or dead space are"
It's funny, I've never actually witness a blowout in-game before. I always get to cover as soon as I hear/see it beginning. Which mod was it that added all sorts of crazy mutant/zombie/hallucinations everywhere during and after blowouts, AMK?
STALKER's never really been a scary game for me, but it definitely can make me uneasy at times. Like in TFW yesterday I got a job from Mole to clear out a point in the swamp. I arrive there just as it starting to get dark and foggy only to find nothing. None of those damn dogs that I've had to clear out a dozen times before, just, strangely, the sole body of a Loner in a SEVA suit. Naturally I investigate; he's got nothing on him. Right as I finish checking him I hear something behind me, spin around, BAM, bloodsucker. Unloaded both TOZ barrels in his face, but it definitely raised my heart rate for a moment. :v:

Tell them to play Clear Sky. Never see anything ever.

At night, I mean.

I'd put STALKER on the same scare-level as Dead Space, creepy atmosphere and jump scares but not really scary.

What does capturing resource points in TFW actually do? I thought it increased the maximum squads your faction could have but apparently not.
What does capturing resource points in TFW actually do? I thought it increased the maximum squads your faction could have but apparently not.
doesn't it give the faction better equipment?
So your soldiers carry better weapons + you can buy better armour and better weapons
doesn't it give the faction better equipment?

It does this. Bases increase the amount of squads, RPs give better equipment for the soldiers and the trader.
In a mission in TFW, Clear Sky told me to find Hermit and give him a case of some shit. Well, I go to the marker and he isn't there. It says he's in the middle of the Dark Valley (where you saved Mole in SoC) but he's nowhere to be found, nor is his corpse even anywhere. Where is he hiding?
Okay, since no one else knows apparently, I'll say.
There'll be those four gigantic white tank things surrounded by a fence. Go into the middle of them and there's a manhole. Jump down and Hermit is chilling there.
Is it worth siding with the cheeki breekis in TFW? I've always been curious but I figured they'd be terrible fighters.

But STALKER isn't scary. I've only jumped like two times, and that was when I first started out. Back then, it was mostly frustration at how I kept dying even though I put on this really cool thing called a "Jellyfish."

They're the funnest because you start out with jackshit, they have shit weapons, have shit armor, but the best base and music. They don't get attacked too much because their only natural predators are basically Duty.
It does this. Bases increase the amount of squads, RPs give better equipment for the soldiers and the trader.
Oh. Guess I better go capture some bases then.

Gone until 17th.

I guess I wouldn't call it "scary" in the traditional sense, but it is "scary" in the sense that fighting mutants, especially bloodsuckers with how they circle around you and disorient you is much more unnerving than plenty of other horror games where the AI is bare bones save for scripted moments where they make them do things.
It's the same with AvP 1999, if you've ever played that it's scarier than many other games because the Aliens are actually hard to shoot, can close the distance and kill you really fast, and they can literally come from any direction at any time thanks to their randomly changing spawn locations during play, as opposed to say, AvP 2 where they always spawn in the same spot.
Also not CoP as much, but SoC's atmosphere is so well done that sometimes it makes me jump at things I don't normally jump at, and it's open and thus much less predictable compared to other games.
I guess scary isn't quite the right word, but I'll use it anyway because I can't think of anything that has actually scared me in a videogame since I was a kid.
It's thrilling. Scary is more like your first encounter with a bloodsucker. Horrifying is the constant dread you get in super spooky places/games, with actual scary encounters.
[editline]15th August 2013[/editline]
I should probably look up the definitions to these words before going off about them, but I'm drunk so you probably shouldn't listen to me anyway.

It was attemptedly humorous remark.
So I haven't played Stalker for quite a while now and I thought that I might give it a try again with the OGSE mod for Shoc. I have to say that it is quite a great mod, it has been really intense thus far.
Just after half an hour, the Cordon was attacked by the military with RPGs, Tolik and Nimble died. Wolf rescued everyone. Fox was killed by Fleshs and I had to hide on a rooftop in order to survive it, there were just tons of Fleshes swarming us.
The military patrolled through the Cordon and killed almost every Stalker. I just got into the Garbage. AMK Sidorovich edition was always my favorite mod but I think OGSE is miles better.
Such is life in the zone.
OGSE cordon is fucking crazy, if you don't keep an eye out you'll suddenly be surrounded by a pack of 10 fleshes.
Horrifying is the constant dread you get in super spooky places/games, with actual scary encounters.
Then I guess my first time in Yantar and going into X16 would qualify as that

At least for me anyway.
But STALKER isn't scary. I've only jumped like two times, and that was when I first started out. Back then, it was mostly frustration at how I kept dying even though I put on this really cool thing called a "Jellyfish."
I dunno man, I always dread going into the labs due to how pitch black they are. Walking into the schoolhouse in CoP also really unnerved me.
Probably the scariest experience I had with stalker was when I was playing Clear Sky, and it was near the beginning so I didn't have any good weapons or NVG's. I was out and about the swamp cleaning up a bandit camp when night fell. The only source of light was the campfire, and i waited around for 5 minutes trying to muster up the courage to venture back to the base. I walk away from the light of the fire and venture into the pitch black reeds.
Lets just say that whoever decided to give the mutants glowing white eyes was a genius. Soon enough I see a bunch of those beady eyes sprinting towards me. Pretty much shit my pants.
I'd put STALKER on the same scare-level as Dead Space, creepy atmosphere and jump scares but not really scary.
STALKER is scary in the sense that you don't expect anything. Dead Space is all scripted shit. Basically STALKER is true horror in the sense that they aren't trying to be scary, scary things just happen whereas Dead Space is just trying to force jumpscares down your throat
