S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Series Megathread: The Zone will stop the Russians
yeah, x-ray has zero tolerance for code or config errors, but is totally ok with things like missing textures, weirdly
IMHO a very weird design choice. Why would you shut down a whole program on something as simple as an error in a config line? It would be way more logical to have it continue, but handle the error differently.
For instance, programming AI in CE2 was pretty wonky at times. If you managed to screw the logic up, they would just stand there doing nothing, but the log would give you the cause of that. So, you could screw with it some more until you got the desired effect without the engine (SDK) crashing constantly.
Sure, one could say;"But CE has always been wysiwyg", but that is (my opinion) what makes it such a great engine, not only visually.
I now wonder how the engine from LA will work and if it will be more 'tolerant'. Sure, multiple processor support, increased RAM, faster engine response and more advanced scripting support, decreased crashes, a new and more stabilized render and other stuff will come in handy, but if they let in the weird gimmicky bugtrap ... :v:
it's the school of thought that any error can cause problems down the line, no matter how small it is, so it's better to just conk out with (hopefully, but not usually in X-Ray's case...) a helpful error message so these problems are corrected and not just left
So, after setting my old rig back up. (My old rig before my current one went bang)
I thought I'd try some COP.
Well after trying to make the game full screen, I bluescreened. After restart, when trying to launch the game. All I get now is this.
Expression : sz<(tgt_sz-1)
Function : IReader::r_string
File : D:\prog_repository\sources\trunk\xrCore\FS.cpp
Line : 426
Description : Dest string less than needed.
[editline]28th January 2014[/editline]
As a sidenote, it WAS fullscreen, changed options, requiring game restart, I did so, and it went into a tiny ass window for no reason, After setting back to full screen, is when it decided to bluescreen. Hence the above. I hate Computers sometimes.
Delete/rename user.ltx?
More specifically, look for the crash log and look at the lines above "Fatal Error", it should tell you which file were corrupted.
Delete/rename user.ltx?
I thought it would fix it also, however upon deleting it, it still did nothing to remedy the problem.
I'm re-installing it at the moment to see if it will fix the problem. Fingers crossed. :v:

Ah well too late now. :v:
[editline]28th January 2014[/editline]
Well that was a waste of time. On static lighting, with all the lowest settings and at a lower res than my native monitor. I was only getting 7FPS in an area with 0 npc's. And got profoundly raped by a small pack of dogs as soon as I started walking anywhere. So that was fun.

What's your system specs? List them here please, as I think this is a hardware problem.
Ugh bloody hell every clear sky mod I install is broken
Tried Clear Skies, everything works fine except the item's inventory icons are all fucked up and most are transparent
I tried looking around and it seems to be a pretty common bug but there's no fix
In the last version of Misery, I liked the VSS "Tide". It shot slow in full auto and was pretty accurate. Now it became GAU-8 supercharged and doesn't hit much. Why ;-;
edit: And full, not broken versions of the radio would be great :D

I had this not too long ago. Try changing between rendering methods, turning fullscreen on/off, etc
That being said, my problem fixed itself after extensive option changes and getting a bluescreen.
[editline]28th January 2014[/editline]
I mean, my current laptop is 8 years old and running XP, it runs CoP under 800x600 minimal settings at ~30FPS inside Skadovsk. Yours can't be worse.

Jesus, we should start a Kickstarter for this guy.
MISERY is just boring the hell out of me now. Instead of making anomalies and artifacts interesting, challenging and in-depth like it promised, it's just completely discouraged me from artifact hunting altogether. What's the point in busting my ass in an anomaly field if the artifacts I get are so damn non-valuable that repairing the (only) suit in the entire game that can withstand the field aura for more than 5 seconds costs exorbitantly more, and keeping it is completely worthless because "%200 thermal protection" just about carries the thermal protecting equivalent of a t-shirt. Oh yeah, and they only re-spawn once every five thousand years
fuck 'balance', the zone isn't a balanced world. I wish there was a mod that had very complex in-depth game mechanics like artifact containers, gun maintenance, AI mechanics, helmet effects and such without making everything a frustrating waste of time (can someone recommend a mod like this?)
also what the hell is up with the grey / brown color-scheme, it feels like im walking around in a gas station toilet instead of an estuary
misery is not even hard, it's just obnoxious, full of artificial difficulty and has a confusing and cluttered inventory

Calm down.
I agree with the boring part; while it is interesting to discover the effective things at first because shit's new and vanilla strategies won't work, the effective strategies are rather grindy and even SGM bored me when I had to grind for 80 spare parts to get the SGM achievement for slashing mechanic prices. Anomalies weren't that big of an issue for me since I carried armored repair kits with me which actually did end up saving me some. After getting the artifacts I wanted I didn't even bother and went gung-ho with TRG. Once I got to Pripyat, I just wasn't ready to go through the same quests over again under the rules and tactics that I had discovered to be effective in M2.1. I could already predict how scenarios would turn out and the sheen disappeared. Funnily enough I haven't completed Misery 2.0 or 2.1, the motivation always freezes after exiting Pripyat Underground.
I don't have a problem with the visuals and I don't have a problem with the items the mod has added, nor do I have a problem with the economy because they haven't really given me much trouble.
However, this

is just funny. Very complex? That'd require tons of custom UI windows popping up all the damn time and clicking a lot, which would get frustrating and repetitive. Artifact containers? Already exist in M2.1. AI mechanics? AI is hard to code, bro. Hell, I personally believe OGSE has the best AI in all of STALKER and they're wizards but even that is just an improvement, not exactly "complex". Helmet effects? M2.1 has them, though personally I don't like helmet overlays. Not making it a frustrating waste of time? All of these excluding AI improvements are inventory management and from the sound of it, you want faster pace. Those two are mutually exclusive.

gonna jump in here, we have a lot of complex new script systems in redux 2.0, and they all either don't use a new interface, or they have very pretty, very usable interfaces - it's not difficult to do interfaces right if you really think about it hard
we'll have to wait and see if you guys agree though!
(also we have helmet overlays but they're optional through the options menu)
You know your mod's economy is fucked when a RPG-7 and 8 RPG grenades cost less than a "modern" SKS.
also what the hell is up with the grey / brown color-scheme, it feels like im walking around in a gas station toilet instead of an estuary
Don't bring this up again. And I'm not even defending Meesorree. This topic has been talked/discussed over 20 times already and I'm not ready to see the next 5 pages filled with reasons/excuses from people who like it.
It's their own vision of the Zone. Let it be. Install a texture pack over it if you really must. Try Absolute Nature.
In the second part I was essentially saying that I wish there was a mod like Misery that added a lot of interactive content, without actually being Misery. Artifact containers and helmet overlays etc. were just examples of elements from Misery that I enjoyed.
Dunno if anyone still cares anymore, but I should have that mod merge I was working on up by the end of the week. Been really busy lately with other stuff.

keep an eye on Redux bro

Shamelessly advertising Redux eh? I hope it'll live up to my expectation, Beac. ;p
[sp]I ceriousley expect a lot from u[/sp]

i've gone through enough of my life not bothering to advertise, but when someone's looking for exactly what you're going to be providing i thought it's worth piping up!

Due to my good rig dying. I back on my old rig, and I mean old rig. :v:

Replace that 3GHz with 4GHz and you have my laptop. You should be able to play vanilla CoP at 20 FPSs @minimal settings

Refuses to run past 10fps, maybe background programs are still squeezing what little resources I have from the game. But all I have active is Hardware ID Monitor, and Avira anti virus. :/
Funny thing is, my quad core processor is barely past 3ghz but the graphics card has been and always will be my bottleneck. a GTS 250 hurts.
Even worse, I bought a graphics card that ended up not being compatible with my motherboard :C
Now I gotta wait till I can order a new one.

That's better than my old comp from back when SHoC came out. Only had a midrange Core 2 Duo and a GTS 250. Actually originally when i had it built, it had a 9800GT in it. I'm cruising on an i7 and a GTX 670 now though.
