thank you for saying exactly what i predicted you'd say. using a deferred renderer and having lots of dynamic lights =/= good lighting engine, in fact that's the bare minimum to expect from a game using a deferred renderer. stalker's lighting is good, but it doesn't rival modern lighting engines, not even remotely.
Deferred Shading > Deferred lighting
All those engines you named use Deferred lighting, except Frostbite. So yeah, I would say the technology does compete since it hasn't changed much. Consoles are now just catching up to PC.
Chill bros~
I didn't necessarily mean it rivals other engines technologically, but more in actual appearance.
Obviously FOX or CryEngine is way more advanced than X-Ray, but in a lot of ways the shadows and general lighting just aren't that much better than X-Ray. The only real difference between those modern engines and X-Ray, visually, seems to be Global Illumination.
Otherwise, X-Ray 1.6 pretty much covers all the bases compared to a modern engine...Soft shadows, high-quality shadow filtering (CoP's DX11 'Ultra' sun shadows are BEAUTIFUL), volumetric lighting, hemispheric environment lighting, SSAO, etc.
But even X-Ray 1.0 still looks impressive, especially considering the renderer in SoC is basically the same as it was back in 2004.
Sometimes you need something ambient while you are working away, so today I decided to listen to the SoC OST.
Makes me realize just how much we need a new STALKER game....
Xray has many failings but it's shadows aren't one of them.
Xray's greatest achievement is probably being able to send you across the map from one of the machine gun bullets in CS.
I find that the moddability of STALKER surpasses many other games.
While it crashes a shitload, and is optimized pretty poorly, the fact that people can basically change the gameplay aspects, weapons, graphically parts, and a lot others, you cannot get in many other games, at all.
There's only one way to solve this debate
AND IT'S TO CHEEKI BREEKI

We're kind of capping out on graphics anyway. The jumps are getting smaller and smaller and we're starting to get diminishing returns from making games look "better." Eventually we're going to hit the point where we won't be able to tell the difference since it'll just be subtle like things slightly better lighting or more pores on a guy's face, if we haven't hit that already.
You guys are missing out if you haven't played the DOS port of STALKER
he's not kidding, it really is stalker

this is unbelievable stuff now
holy shit does that mean we could get a mosin with scope and irons at the same time?
on another note, has anyone considered adding sounds for shells hitting the ground?
took me almost the whole video to realize that the reload animation wasn't fucking up, it was the gun jamming.

All the absurd NPCs walking around everywhere reminded me of the spirit world from Adventure Time.
Ey lads, been out of the scene for a while.
What are the hot (released) mods for CoP right now?
Don't say misery.

I fucking love how even something like the scope reticle doesn't go unnoticed. It starts blinking more and more as the gun's condition goes down.

I've not played stalker for 2 years and uninstalled it completely. I want to play it again though. Any new mods or mod updates for SoC that've come out in the last 2 years?
the attention to detail that gunsliner has is miles better / higher than any AAA game
So whats the deal with the recommended mods site in the OP? It doesnt seem to be working.

What's weird is he even put in proper jamming animations that just shows the dedication.
[editline]10th January 2015[/editline]
Like I even notice a AAA release title and think that a MOD for quite an old but popular game has better attention to detail and just all round effort.
Is there anything I can change in the files to make stealth more legit? pref with a knife. ShoC, that is.
