You just have to own the item at one point to have it added in the catalog I believe. You can check the catalog when you get the level 2 nookling store.

It's up to you. Plenty of people on here time travel without any "real reason" other than it brings them enjoyment. Same way I don't because I'd rather not. It's just your choice, no one's going to hate you because you decided to time travel.
