US Release date for the GC Animal Crossing was September 15, 2002

The first English AC was released in the US in 2002, which is what he's referring to. 2001 is the Japanese date.
Fun fact: That whole bit about not having ridden trains much since 2002 isn't in the Japanese version; that was entirely added for the English release.
