The game's clock IS the 3DS' internal clock.
Changing the clock will only affect the turnips as if that amount of time actually passed. If you go back a day, however, they'll instantly go rotten.

Wait so can't you just change the 3DS clock to the 30th [I]and then[/I] the in game clock back to the 30th before you boot up your town? Unless, changing the in game clock is what you count as time travelling.

I would not recommend risking it regardless, however I assumed the game clock and 3DS clock were separate, my 3ds date was set to 2011 and the game 2013. When I corrected the system time and booted the game the main menu was full of weeds and isabelle said it was 2015, I asked Isabelle to set the clock back from 2015 to 2013 and once I got into game everything was completely normal, no weeds and no comments on being gone.
Does being a time traveler take the place of villagers calling you a happy tourist or freshman mayor?
