Heh. Just caught two dorado in a row. They were right next to eachother in the river, and catching one somehow didn't scare off the other one. I guess they were just barely far enough apart for that second or two.

Welcome to the club.
The brown things are called gyroids. Basically musical cacti you can place in your house.
The fortune cookie gives miscellaneous nintendo stuff.
Collect bells and buy tools from the Nooklings shop. You normally will start out with a shovel and a net or a fishing pole. Get whatever one is not in the store by talking to Isabelle in town hall.
Use these tools to fish/catch bugs and sell them for bells at the Re-tail store. After your first day you will find holes that contain fossils or gyroids if it rained the day before.
Use the bells to expand your house size by talking to Tom Nook in his real estate office. Your can repay your home loan at the ATM in the post office.
Later on you can customize your town more with public works projects, and an Island is unlocked later where you can make $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Have fun. The game is about customization really.
