Farm beetles till you have an assload of bells, then when Sow Joan comes on Sunday hope she's selling at a reasonable rate and buy as many turnips as you can. Through the week check in with Reese to see what price she's buying them at. If it's exceptionally good, go for it. Or just check out reddit's turnip trading thing and find one right away.

make a foreign fruit grove. same fruits stack, you can fill your inventory up with stacks of 9 fruit each and with foreign fruit being worth like 500 bells apiece each stack is like 4000 bells.
dig up fossils, 4 of them spawn per day.
smack rocks with a shovel, each day one of them will spew out bells like those blocks in the mario games that just keep giving you coins each time you hit them. also one per day will break open and give you gems.
invade other people's towns and steal all their fossils and fruit. they won't notice.
grow perfect fruit and stockpile it. once you've amassed a good quantity, find another town that doesn't have that type of fruit and sell it at their recycling centre for 3000 bells per fruit (and that's if they don't have the bell boom in effect).
gather valuable shit like fossils and sought-after nintendo items (stuff like majoras mask or the link and samus clothing sets) and flaunt them here, people pay big bells for that shit sometimes.
play the turnip market. a stroke of luck can net you literally millions at once.

You can also log into Gmail and mail a bunch of images to yourself and sort them out later. That's what I do, anyways.

It's an extremely rare medal reward on the island. I only have mine because a friend was lucky enough to spot it on his island and let me know.
