You'd do the public works projects as normal. As time went by, your rule would become less democratic. As you continue to go about your day, fishing and bug-catching all the rare-species to extinction, funding intrusive public works and cutting down trees to make room for them, they begin to meet in secret. While on the exterior, they seem to be happy and cute as ever, trading you for furniture and asking you to make deliveries for them, they're plotting your exile. One day, as you go to save and quit, you're surrounded. The villagers you once thought of as your people have turned against you completely, and they knock you out and put you back on the train.
You move on to find another village to take command of.
