It takes time for them to evolve and become sentient.
It cracks me up to no end how sometimes villagers will talk about watching "*species here* entertainment channel", as if there's something akin to BET for every species ever in this world.
It makes me think the TV programming you see in the game is the channel meant for humans, and when visiting an animal's house they change it to that to be polite.

Doubutsu no Mori (64) looked much worse. Had spiffy Famicoms instead of NESs though.

The version we know (the Gamecube one) is actually Doubutsu no Mori E+, which was the N64 game remade to take advantage of the GBA's e-Reader and systemlink cable functionality.
Nintendo never expected the game to be well-received outside Japan, funnily enough. It was thanks to the bargain price and quirky TV ad campaign that it took off.

Actually it was Doubutsu no Mori+ that we got. The e+ version is a Japanese exclusive, so they got all the cool things like Resetti's hideout, town decorations, and waking up Tom Nook in the dead of night to make expensive last minute purchases.

I have an orchard in town, which is just basically a location decked full of trees with a few bushes to indicate a line. People ask for fruit from those trees ALL THE TIME, WHEN THERE'S EVEN FRUIT ON THE GROUND.

So I made a little forest for the campsite, and Hans moved into the northern part of it.
I should be mad that his house deforested a chunk of what I'd made, but it turned out actually looking kind of interesting. Like he's got a cottage in the woods.

Do you have a perfect town?
After you've had a perfect town for 15 days straight, Isabelle gives you a Golden watering can.
It waters a 3x3 square of flowers instead of just one.
Alternatively, after buying 50 flower bags from the Garden Shop, Leif will give you a Silver watering can, which waters 5 in a plus-sign shape.
I like the silver can better since the golden one takes too long.
