It's essentially just a life sim game where you live in a town filled with animals.
Of course, while the main point of the game is to collect furniture for your house, you can also talk to your neighbors, collect bugs, fish, and fossils which you can either sell or donate to your town's Museum.
It really isn't "about" anything.
There's a lot of dialogue in the beginning, but after the starting conversations, (and working for Nook), you get free range to do whatever you feel like.
