You unlock the island after paying off your second loan and after you talk to cappn.
Go to the island at 7 PM.
Catch all beetles on palm trees and sharks (they have a higher spawn rate on the island).
Sell the beetles and sharks at retail.

it's because you can donate multiple things at once, I assume. I don't want to have to listen to them all in a row or donate one at a time because I'll miss the dialog. The descriptions are in the museum anyway.

Just got a killer deal off Craigslist for a 3DS XL and just got this and Mario 3D Land from Gamestop.
Had a blast today playing nothing but New Leaf so far. I've spent an abnormal amount of hours on the Gamecube and DS versions and it still feels fresh (skipped City Folk though).
So I've been hearing some weird stories about AC that's making me consider getting this game. Basically this:

As you would expect to be penalized for not saving, all the progress you'd made in that session is gone
People complain a lot that they could just add autosave but come on all you gotta do is press start

There's a catalog, but you have to get the first store upgrade.
The recycle bin's gone, but you can just sell unwanted stuff to the Re-Tail shop.
(Even though they charge a fee to dispose of certain items.)
