If you are playing that pre-made campaign that Wizards pushed out ( Hoard of Dragon Queen or something along those lines ), you should know it is rather brutal introduction.
Roll20 worked fine for us. Maptools is another alternative, but is more difficult to set up, probably.
We actually did some of first fights without any board and it worked kinda well.

Entirely custom campaign, custom setting and all that. Me and my friends did a pre-made campaign with another DM and it went pretty sour early on.
My only problem with roll20 is the marketplace, and I haven't found many free tilesets or icons online.

You can use tokentool to make tokens out of anything rather than using what is just on roll20.

Yeah, there's a line tool(hover over the brush on the left side, I think it's actually called the polygon tool or something). If you hold shift while clicking, it snaps it to the nearest grid intersection, and then you can just keep clicking along to have your lines be aligned with the grid.
And as an FYI, if you want to stop your line where it is without closing the shape, you can right-click to have it break the line where it is and leave it.
